Madonna was sorta paying homage to Marilyn Monroe and recreated a number from the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" where Marilyn played a gold digger, the 80's icon emulating the 50's icon. She doesn't like her early version that much, she didn't like being referred to as the "Material Girl" because of this song, but this is what made her the Queen Of Pop that she is today.
She invented the concept of a Pop Female Superstar, reinventing herself, pushing the button and breaking the rules for all the womans 👑 doing great videos before CZcams and internet...she and MTV created a force, and when Madonna debut a video was a BIG DEAL so....she's not only the first female Pop Superstar, she's THE QUEEN OF POP 😉

that shows how iconic she already was from the get go.
Material Girl" the second single off of her second album, "Like a Virgin". Although Madonna wrote and Co-wrote most of her songs in her catalogue, this one was a demo floating around the studio and Madonna took a liking to it. Together with Niles Rodgers of "Chic" produced this song to this infectious poppy sound. Madonna used the song as a commentary to the excess of the 80's with a video that tells a completely different and ironic take, as she is singing and dancing this as a Marilyn Monroe inspired singer, as she told a story of the complete opposite, that media thinks she's a material girl but quite the opposite. Her vocals was also sped up to suit the irony of a Betty-boop like impression she's is creating. Once again, a marvelous singer, curator and visual artists that cumulate to this pop masterpiece that's still going strong almost 40 years later.
I think that prior to Madonna there were female Pop stars and even Super Stars.
A few examples would be Diana Ross, Donna Summer and Olivia Newton John.
MADONNA though, took it to new levels WORLD WIDE so I'd say she is the FIRST female Super Star POP ICON

Donna Summer and Diana Ross. But Madonna certainly blazed the trail for the modern female pop icon. She and Cyndi were the big early MTV era breakout stars.

Madonna is the first female global icon. There were great female artists before her but until Madonna came, pop superstardom was a male dominated territory. With her third album in 1986, she became in total control of her career and artistry. No other female artist had that before. After Madonna, female musicians were more and stronger. She defined what a female superstar could be.

There were many icons before her in the USA but M is the first Global ICON and also the first to be in total control and ownership of her music/songs from the 3rd LP onwards. As they say now (eg Beyoncé n Taylor Swift), ownership is everything!
The song is a parody about the 80s materialism, even her pitch is ironic, betty boop style! and with the number with the pink dress, she recreated marilyn monroe's number: "diamonds are a girl best friends" from the film "gentlemen prefer blonds" based on a book of Anita Loos which was a parody about golddiggers
But Madonna isn't a golddigger, she has been working hard for her money! but the song was so huge back then that the press started to call her "the material girl" and I think she was so upset that they didn't understand the meaning of the song that she never sang it again!... till the Rebel Heart tour in 2015!

The idea behind her video was homage to Marilyn Monroe and Diamonds are a Girls best friend. If you watch her movie you’ll see a very similar scene and outfits. The sashes are generally worn at Balls and the identified royalty and each colour represents a different Monarchy. In the 80’s Madonna and Micheal Jackson were considered the queen and king of pop. Diana Ross, Cher, Cindi Loper, and countless others were even more popular before them but what helped her rise to the top was the music videos constant playing on MTV at least every half hour to hour and her videos were considered controversial so a lot of places banned them so obviously that made young people want to find them even more. If you watch them and compare them to 15-20 year later hers weren’t very out there but she was a trail blazer.

My humble suggestions for your second Madonna week, this time from different era to showcase her versatility and thought she puts into her visual arts.
1 Burning up - from the first album, the video needs to be viewed as a history lesson of music videos in its infancy, where the production value is a bit crude and laughable but also historic with the cutting edge technology of the time in early 80s. Filmed by the same directors as Billie Jean's, Cars etc. You can certainly see the same influence.
2. Open your heart - from the True Blue era, this is when Madonna turned from a super star to a megastar, the album sold 25 million copies. This music video incorporated so much art and subliminal messages that I won't spoil, but it takes place in the 30s-era peep show.
3. Erotica - lead single from her erotica era, this is a tie in with the release of her coffee table book of erotica fantasies called "sex", you'll see Naomi Campbell, Vanilla Ice, Big daddy Kane, Isabella roselini etc.
4 America life - the unreleased version, Madonna's anit-war sentiment, clearly and masterfully in the video. pay close attention to the fashion show.
5 Medellin - her bohemian video from her latest album Madame X in 2019, just a contrast of Madonna as a visual artist 40 years later.
