Oscar Peterson, even this many year's after his death, is still the standard I measure all jazz - not just pianists- against. He has a beauty elegance grace in his playing that does not fade with time. He had the ability to improvise but not lose the beauty of the underlying melody. In my mind, he is and was a giant.

He inspires me so much because of how hard he worked to reach the level he did. People will say Art Tatum was better, fine, whatever, but Oscar shows us that we can all strive and reach the heights we choose to if we persist.

There's a great video out there with Andre Previn interviewing him in front of an audience, and that subject comes up. It's funnier in the long version, but basically Oscar was a teenager and starting to get a little cocky, so his dad played him a record by Tatum. At first Oscar wouldn't believe it was only one guy playing. After being convinced, he gave up playing for a month. (I would have given up playing for a year, LOL!)

Oscar Peterson--- I started listening to Oscar back in the early 70's on KKGO JAZZ station out of LA and I always thought there had to be at least three piano players or more.
I never had heard anyone play the Jazz Classics with all-time ten finger chords for every note. He played the melody, his style. The rhythm and chords with his left hand. And adorned the song with Ocar Peterson's own claasic style. Is the ultimate Classical Jazz Pianist in the world.

Quel talent...

To me, jazz is not cheap entertainment (like much of pop music) that is easily discarded once the melody becomes familiar. The greats add so many layers and so much flavor to the music that you can hear something new every time you listen.
In other words, enjoying jazz is more educational and takes more effort, which is why I think fewer people really enjoy it.
