- The 1860s saw much of Europe move to adopt breechloading rifles. Britain held extensive trials with over 20 designs tested, one of the most interesting was submitted by Johann von der Poppenburg.
In this video Matt examines the engineering and history of Poppenburg's rifle and explains why it lost out to the famous Martini-Henry. Check out Matt's accompanying blog on the Benson-Poppenburg at: armourersbench.com/2019/02/03...

What a nice looking rifle. It always makes me kinda sad to see all the work and attention that went in the making of these guns which then were never adopted and even forgotten pretty quickly.
I know what you mean, researching them I sometimes find out about their designer's lives and often wonder how they felt about their inventions and sometimes their failures. At least their legacy lives on and we can enjoy their design/engineering! Thanks for watching. - Matt
Thanks for watching guys, check out our blog for more photos and some extra history on the Poppenburg here: armourersbench.com/2019/02/03/the-1866-benson-poppenburg-breechloading-rifle/ I've been wanting to take a look at a Benson-Poppenburg for a long time so it was exciting to finally examine one, hope you enjoyed the video - Matt
Quite the elegant rifle
Fascinating as always!
Thanks Matt, appreciate it!
The locking recesses on each of the receiver rails and vertically travelling lugs look remarkably similar to those on the much later Sjögren semiautomatic shotgun!
Beautiful rifle. Thanks!
The rapid fire use of the word cock in this commentary has pushed me to pouring a glass of knob creek with soda water. 👍
quality vid once again
7:29 I think you meant "a .577 caliber cartridge" (although 5.77 cal would make for a seriously impressive rifle).
Yes I did :)
