That said, many in the Conservative Party then were one nation Conservatives, more paternalistic in their outlook and conception of the role of the state. Not all by any means of course. The Johnson iteration of the Conservative Party is really a hard right ( a phrase the media never uses unlike hard left) takeover/ purge of what went before. There can be no excuse for the policies of the 1980s but some of the Conservative Party were motivated by a sense of public service and accepted the post war consensus with Labour. Their world view was shaped by the experience of the Second World War. The Johnson Conservative government is heavily populated with lightweight, unprincipled, dishonest opportunists who have dragged the country into the gutter.

Never let facts stand in the way of a good bit of solid prejudice. I wonder if this has anything to do with C4 putting a block of melting ice as a substitute for BoJo when he didn't turn out for a serious discussion on climate change. Or perhaps "they" resented one of C4's senior editors referring to BoJo as "a liar" during a lecture. No, surely not, no responsible Secretary of State would ever be that ignorant, mean minded, vindictive and petty. Oh!
The most ironic part of this is that C4 was established by Margaret Thatcher who was its champion. She saw the virtue in a self financing Channel, likely to maintain programme quality and also underpin innovation. The revenue was to be to be ploughed back into programme making, as has indeed happened, and not into shareholders' pockets. Still maybe BoJo's flying circus has just such a vision....
