The original Lincoln Navigator was the ultimate SUV from 20 years ago. Today I'm reviewing a 1999 Lincoln Navigator to show you why the first Lincoln Navigator was such an icon -- and I'm going to show you why the Navigator started a trend that exploded afterwards. I'm also driving the Navigator to explain how it drives.

It was a DOHC 4-valve that also served as the basis for the 5.4 in the Cobra R Mustang, the GT500 and Ford GT. Too bad Doug didn’t do a little bit of research before hand.

I remember these were huge 20+ years ago. I remember getting a sound system installed in my car at "Car Sound" off Roswell Rd in Atlanta late 90s and sitting next to my car was a black navigator owned by the Rap R&B singer Keith Sweat. It was top dog only under euro sedans. Expensive or nice 90s cars were mostly good cars and very well made for their time. I can tell Doug liked the ride quality but couldn't show it too much because to most folks its now considered a POS. I'd prefer the way this Navigator drives and works over the new one. Simple and connected. In 20 years the new Navigator will be driving with many issues from infotainment wear to turbos that no longer push air.

Key point missed - the Navigator got the DOHC 4v 5.4l, everything else of the era with a Ford 5.4l(which the "InTec" is) got a SOHC 2v. Of course, a DOHC V8 was quite exotic back then, which went hand-in-hand with the "luxury" positioning of the Navigator.
Frankly, the DOHC Modular V8s are just better too; flow much more air, made more power with a broader power band, just much more drivable engines. The only other DOHC V8 Fords back then were older '90s Lincoln RWD coupes, Mustang Cobras with the 4.6l, and the Mercury Marauder also received one of those NA DOHC Cobra 4.6ls, and the only-300-made 2000 Cobra R got the DOHC 5.4l(WAY different cylinder heads than any previous DOHC Ford, eventually evolved into what went on the GT & GT500). Otherwise, Ford trucks with the 5.4l only received SOHC 2v & 3v(in '05ish+) heads, even the supercharged Lightning(2v heads & garbo rods are its Achilles heal, compared to all other supercharged V8 Ford).
Of course, the Coyote 5.0l(& derivatives) is only a DOHC now since we're at the 400HP minimum for medium displacement V8s at this point, and, frankly, I believe that every single other Ford engine today is a DOHC 4v too for that matter(except for the 6.2l SOHC V8, and the 6.7l diesel is a pushrod 4v), now that we're in an era of major focus on maximizing HP/l for the sake of downsizing, and cylinder head flow is the most critical aspect of maximizing power output.
Every Ford engine except the new monster 'Godzilla' 7.3l pushrod V8 of course...

This brought back my childhood. My mom had the exact same Navigator (color-wise, but a 2000 year model) just with less fake wood, which I highly doubt was a dealer accessory. She loved it so much she traded it in 2005 for a fully loaded black on gray 2006 Navigator Ultimate. We were so blown away by the cooled seats, power liftgate and running boards, and both cars brought many good memories. She was excited for the next generation until the 2007 dropped and came with that hideous face, so she moved on to the 2007 Escalade, and later a 2010. They never did give us that same feeling the Navigators did. My favorite quirk of the 2000 Navi was the "stadium" setting on the radio. So much reverberation 😅
