  • Are you thinking about a Canada working holiday? Moving to Canada is so rewarding, but it can also be a lot of work. In partnership with The Working Holiday Club, I discuss what I'm noticing this season after living in Banff National Park for over two years. Whether you are moving to Banff, Whistler, Big White or another amazing ski resort location, this video is for you!
    More and more people are turning up in ski towns without a job or housing secured and the outcomes are not always great. The increasing job competitiveness and lack of housing in these locations are affecting many people... so let's get you set up for success.
    This video has been sponsored by The Working Holiday Club, a working holiday company I used to come to Canada a few years ago now! Their working holiday packages are the perfect starting point for anyone looking to move to Canada. The Working Holiday Club made the move to Canada so much easier for my partner and I and their work is something I am very excited to share with you. Find out how their services work and how they can help you get established before you even land!

    Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like the main issue is everybody wants to go to Banff or Whistler so obviously they're overrun. Panorama, Silverstar, Castle Mountain, Big White etc all offer staff housing, have plenty of jobs and great skiing...

      Banff and whistler are definitely two of the most popular choices and this video is highly relevant to those locations for that exact reason! While I do love Banff, there are so many other amazing resorts like you have mentioned and I cannot comment on the conditions at each of those specifically. I know big white has been extremely difficult for many of my friends recently to find jobs and housing at as well but hopefully some of the other ones you listed have good opportunities too! For those who are still planning to move to these busy destinations, i do think it’s important to be prepared though!

    Hey Caitlin, love all your content! I'm planning on working this Canadian winter but won't be in Australia before heading to Canada. If the country I'm in has a Canadian Embassy can I do my biometrics there and organize the rest of the visa online. Cheers :))

      We did our whole process in Australia with the help of The Working Holiday Club so I know how that all works but i don’t know enough about applying from outside your home country to give advice on that! Hopefully there is someone online who has done it that way who can provide advice. Otherwise The Working Holidah Club know everything so you could always reach out to them :)

    Hey! thanks so much for these videos they've been so helpful already. I'm hoping to do a ski season in Canada at the end of this year and have got my visa already! I've been told jobs start advertising around June/July, is that true? I'm thinking a job with accomodation is basically a must at this point - do you think my best bet is applying online at that time or should I plan to arrive early and look in person? Thanks :)

    • @caitlinlaurent
      @caitlinlaurent  Před 3 měsíci

      So glad they have been helpful!
      Congrats on getting your visa - that's the biggest part! I agree that getting a job with accommodation is the best starting point and 100% begin applying online once jobs are advertised. Looking once you arrive should be a last resort unless you have the money to sustain yourself and want that initial freedom. Securing something before coming is the most secure way to start your working holiday though for sure! Good luck :)

    What would the months in the shoulder seasons be? ☺️

    • @caitlinlaurent
      @caitlinlaurent  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hello! It’s slightly different depending on location (just because of later/earlier winter starts) but in Banff I would say your best bet is coming in September/October as the ski season starts in November.
      When we first moved here, we landed in Vancouver on the 21st of September and travelled over to Banff arriving on the 1st of October. We started work at the ski hill around the 3rd of October and we were the first group of employees to start!
      At the same resort, some other staff started up to a month later as the ski resort opened in early November. For us that timing was perfect and town was very quiet initially!
      If you are considering somewhere in BC, their ski season usually starts a little later than that so November may even be a more appropriate month!
      Vise versa, if you are planning on coming for summer, May/ early June in Banff is the month that’s usually quieter as people leave from winter and start coming for summer. The ski season usually runs until the third week of May for context! Resorts in BC usually close earlier than that though.
      I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions

    do you *need* to go through an agency? do you have friends who went over and sorted out their entire IEC by themselves w success? also-how did you get staff accom with your partner? as in how could you request to be taken in as a pair?
    update: I am definitely looking into theworkingholidayclub (compared to other agencies) but im still unsure.
    thank u i love your videos!! 😊

      Hello! I love the rollercoaster of this question hahah - yes we did use The Working Holiday Club and had a great experience. I do also know people who have done it themselves - two very different experiences both both totally possible!
      We knew we wanted to work at the same place from the get go and TWHC are so used to helping couples, friend groups etc so it wasn't an issue at all! In order to get staff accom together though - you do need to work at the same location. I think going through TWHC gave us an advantage in this sense as we got into job interviews early in the hiring process. Alternatively you can apply to all the same jobs and hope for the best! - GOOD LUCK

    Hi guys, I wonder, what are your advices, for me. I'm bigger person, and mine biggest problem is, due to some of mine health issues, I'm not able to earn money for living with only my hands. But I also do not have any high school, or university. I'm 29, and mine financial reserve is going to be around 5000€ (8000 CAD) without counting 2500 CAD which I must have during working holidays. Where do you think, should I land and book my first Airbnb for a (?)month(?). I've studied tourism, and I've worked as a guide in museum a few years ago. I've tough about Calgary, AB, but after knowing Banff, and Whistler wouldn't be a best choice, I'm not sure right now... J

      Hey Jakub, what type of work would you want to do and would you prefer to live in a city or mountain town? Happy to help if i can, just trying to get a little more context :)

    • @JakubSemoda
      @JakubSemoda Před 3 měsíci

      @@caitlinlaurent what I would prefer is to be in contact with a customers, or visitors. From what I've done, I've really enjoyed working as a guide in a museum, where I've met a lot of people, and made some good friends. Also, in recent years, I've been working as a staff member, or a guide (sorry for my English) at a children's attraction, where parents pay me for their children for 15 minutes, and I watch for the children, paying attention for them to not hurt themselves, and so on, so this type of a job would be the most preferred for me, and if not, I would in the shop, selling something like smart phones, and similar products, or I love driving, so after I'll be able to drive, I wouldn't have a problem working in this type of jobs (unless I wouldn't had to drive around city in 80 km per hour, as I did a few years ago, when I worked as a pizza delivery guy, and left the job after hitting the oil pan, on my way to the customer). When we're talking about where I would like to live, both, the city, or the mountain town would be nice, but I would probably need shorter time, to get used to getting around, and drive around, because I'm not used to drive around 8 lane highways, and crossings, so I'm a little bit afraid to it. J

      @@JakubSemoda The mountains sound like they might be perfect for you then! A little quieter for sure. There are plenty of childcare, museum and customer service roles available. I am sure you would be able to find something 100% Maybe have a look at the few museums we have in town as a starting point? Good luck!

      @caitlinlaurent thank you a lot, so yes, Calgary Airport is going to be my final destination, and I'll try to Finns something in Banff, or Calgary. My next step is to visit the vac to get my biometrics taken, and then, I hope I can fly in the second half of March, so I'm very excited. J

      Very different lifestyle though! And after a recent visit, I found it even more expensive than life in the mountains too. Of course each to their own, city and ski resort lifestyles are very different and usually people are moving to Canada for one or the other specifically so if they want city, I hope that works for them :)

      Potentially! I also think a lot of people put off their working holidays over the pandemic and now we are seeing higher than before levels of travelers? Not sure but both are definitely valid reasons! Canada is too beautiful not to see 😊
