  • In this video I'll be showing you how to make a Bunjin or Literati Style Bonsai from a piece of Portulacaria Afra raw material.
The plant had no good ramification and was therefore the perfect candidate for a Bunjin style. The Bunjin style basically is a style where only the top of the tree has foliage and the tree is otherwise really tall and slender.
It is an imitation of trees that grow in high forests, where light cannot reach the lower branches of trees because of the dense foliage of all the trees on top. It looks really spectacular, as the tree trunks usually grow in fascinating ways to reach the light - same happened here, the tree trunk has a very unusual and curvy form. Watch the video and try it for yourselves, it is really an easy thing to do.

Keep the bits that are cut off for 2 weeks to let them dry out then plant them in a gritty mix of damp but not soaking compost and they will grow into more little trees..

You make a point about the great nebari, but then you bury it by planting it so deep! Let's see some flare where it hits the soil, otherwise it looks like a stick, not a tree.

I am going to expose it more on the next repotting. Since I cut the plant back so drastically I wanted to make sure to bury as much as possible beneath the soil for the roots to recover. I am glad I did that because the tree has only recently started to recover - it’s a long process after a trimming like that

@@Bonsaifly I don't think you need to worry that much with P. afra. At the very least, I think you would have been safe if you planted it with the tops of the large, woody roots being exposed.

@@mirandusings you’re probably right. It’s too late now anyway. But since people have been liking this tree I am going to do an update after the summer anyway and maybe I’ll position it a little higher then :)

Hey there 🌱 it is still recovering from the styling, since it’s kept indoors in my temperate climate (Germany). It has formed the first new buds and I’ll do a video on the status of some of my trees (including this one) in late spring, when they are full of leaves and healthy 🌱

Hay muchos Bonsais de Portulacaria amigo. Es una especies tropical, usada mucho en lugares como Florida :)
