    These sorts of videos are great for preservation. It is cool that you go over every detail. Often times, review videos for devices don't show all the buttons, ports, and other connectivity, which are things that are cool to look back on in the future when our technology is entirely different.

    • @Coastfog

      Very true. When I think of the mp3 players I had in the early 2000s, they already seem like ancient tech, but what a quantum leap it was from the thick CD Walkman with unreliable anti-shock. It's part of our technological history now.

    I've dreamed of having a mordern version of a device like this that would automatically dump any photos from an SD card onto my google photos (probably using a wifi connection). My ideal device wouldn't even necessarily need a screen, perhaps just a progress bar to indicate copying, uploading, and complete. If the device scanned for photos that haven't already been uploaded and just copied those, even better. I think it could help bring (any, not just wifi enabled) digital cameras into the modern world, allowing people to start using cameras again rather than their phone without the hassle of fluffing around with apps and computers.

    • @DragonFanngg
      @DragonFanngg Před 2 lety +13

      Wouldn’t it help to have that feature in the camera itself and bypass the need of an additional device? Given the hardware capabilities these days, the functionality can be added to a single core while also leaving enough resources for various other features to run.
      Cameras can even be made to fit a SIM card, much like an iPad does, or simply pair with your hotspot. I believe, the latter already exists.

    • @shippo72
      @shippo72 Před 2 lety +4

      Well that device already exists! It's just that in the spirit of miniaturization, your SD card, ImageTank and cellphone have all fused together into a "smart phone". Yes, you can automatically backup all your photos to the cloud as soon as you take the picture, or wait until you cannot to your home wifi to automatically upload them either to your computer or cloud or even both!
      Now, if you're the type of person who likes to use a dedicated, high resolution camera and save your pictures to SD card, then you're kinda SOL, as even the super high-end cameras don't really have any wifi capabilities, and even if they did, it would take forever to transfer RAW files over wifi anyway.

    I could easily imagine a modern version of this perhaps using a high capacity laptop hard disc or SSD. It could maybe run a version of Android for ease of getting an OS and just have a custom app to manage the backup functions. Plug it into a computer and it turns up as a couple of drives, one being the android storage and the other being the hard disc itself. Maybe even have a docking station so that the user could have it as a digital photo frame while its transferring large amounts of data on your desk.
    But yeah, I kinda want a modern one to be a bit more than just an external hard drive.

      I wonder about an improvised one using a Raspberry Pi and battery/touchscreen, with some kind of storage solution, like even an SSD connected by a USB-to-SATA adapter. A dedicated one though could use an ARM CPU, maybe some kind of really light embedded Linux or BSD build to save on RAM, and perhaps even something like RAID-1. Connect 2 HDDs or SSDs so the data can be loaded on both, so if one dies, you still have the other!

    It is kinda funny that I already knew of this concept because the Palm LifeDrive (which came out in 2005) had this feature. In 2005 Palm changed from everything being run in RAM to actually having some NAND flash storage and loading things into RAM to run it. For the LifeDrive they wanted a ton of space on it but back then it was still pricy so they went with a MicroDrive.
    It was 4Gb and for a Palm that was actually massive. Even for point and shoot cameras of the day it was impressive enough.
    In fact you can change the MicroDrive out for a much more huge CF card, add an SDHC driver and still get a bit of use out of it.

    It should support SD, SDHC, SDXC, SDUC, CFast, CFI, CFII cards.
    Use a SATA connection for the internal drive.
    A 2TB SATA based SSD is cheap these days and if the device used a good Li-Ion Po battery it could last a good amount of time.
    Perfect for a pro photographer who would fill up their cards quickly.
    It would need to run a basic version of linux not only for security reasons, but to make it cheaper(no windows CE licensing fees)
    It would as you mentioned it, be small, light an battery life would be good these days.
    Bonus if it has WiFi or 4G ability so it can also sync photos to your cloud backup.
