Special thanks to Martijn van der Veur (misspelled in video) for letting me film his watch, and also hinting the DSM LCD calculator.
Also thanks to Nigel from vintagecalculators.com for his helpful response and very informative website. - Věda a technologie
"This unit has passed the test of time well. After all, it's 45 years old"
*proceeds to cut it open
Golden comedic timing.
2 years late but just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this film. You have a wonderful ability to bring all the elements together.
CZcams algorithm goes brrrr
Same
Algorithm works in mysterious ways
Love that you referred to this as a film!
With his insane production quality and amazing narration, it definitely can be nominated for that title

This is some of the most exceptional educational video I've ever seen. Subbed, and I'm going to share your channel around. You're magnificent and have amazing cinematography.
Thank you!
just stumbled across this video. Super awesome and enjoyable!!
and you scared me for a but when you suddenly spoke Dutch!!? By your accent I thought you where from the Scandinavian area
@@roxthedumbhyena Thought exactly the same!
@@roxthedumbhyena The fact that germanic accents can be so similar sometimes just makes it a good pair
I find your name is stupid, and thats saying a lot
You should clearly have 1000x as many subs as this...
Thank you, sir 🙃
very true
And views
At this rate,
He will, in a few days...

Everyone sees the immediate quality of your videos, but things go a layer deeper when they realize... you compose the soundtrack too. Outstanding. Absolutely mind-blowing.
This content is criminally underrated. I've been plugging this to my friends to the point where they're annoyed by me. The music is the best part. It reminds me of Mogwai's Atomic for reasons I can't accurately describe.
Thank you!
I love to find someone with as much talent as you. The artistry of those colored LCD shots was a shock and I DID watch it for those 4+ minutes. Not only did I find a CZcams subscription, but a Spotify one as well. Thank you for taking the time.
Jesus, that was four minutes? I was entranced the entire time
I stared at a calculator screen for 4 minutes, but for some reason, I'm not mad about it. the production quality of this was amazing I love your work man!
I've got you beat by like 4 hrs..
No,you’ve wasn’t even’s

I’ve got you beat by like 4 hrs..
Was saddened at how compression was ruining it when I realized it was playing in 480p. When I switched to 4k, holy crap. Superb video!
holy shit even on 1080p i switched to 4k and the compression is so much worse on 1080, even if you cant see the pixels 4k looks so much better
my eyes are so bad i never noticed. maybe i'll give it a try
I feel offended on behalf of those stunning macros you shot that anyone might consider skipping them. Also, you're a great storyteller, you blend educational value with fun and art. Very unique style, glad I found this channel, I'll spread the word. :)
Oh my goodness it has been 8 months :o
The production value in this video is off the charts, great work!
6:52 I would unironically use this as a wallpaper on my computer. This looked fantastic, thanks for providing this much information in such a lovely made video (or film?)
I was unironically dumbfounded when you said "45 years old..." and you started cutting it 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Now, that gets me really interested in the things you do and say ironically.
@@tiltil9442 I would use your comment as a wallpaper
@@Sventra I have to say thank you, unironically!! That is a clever reply and I'm smiling ear to ear typing this.
😄👍
I was thinking the same thing
Seriously impressed by the production values of this informative and educational series. Thoroughly enjoyed finding out about LCDs and how they work!
Your commentary is very well written and comprehensible, but somehow it manages to make this technology seem even more like some kind of magic.
Stunning video! I could imagine the pulsing effect comes from the LCD being driven with a biased squarewave, basicly flipping the electrical polarity to avoid permanent polarization of the liquid crystal.
Thank you for thi excellent video! I've always wondered how the DSM LC displays work and until recently never seen in a video. But this just blew my mind! By the way, there is (or has been) a similar display made in recent years - Sharp Memory LCD, especially the PNLC type. The technology is different but a similar look is achieved - looks like a white (diffused) pixel on mirror background. All that without polarizers!
Cool, thanks for the info :)
Found a video of it: czcams.com/video/nQLFWlcsdi4/video.html
@@PosyMusic Hey! As many others, I have found your videos through your latest LCD video, which blew up and allowed you to gain an immense amount of traction. Which made me think I would never be able to get contact with you but I will try to post a comment you will see, so.. thank you - I immediately started binge watching your videos, the frustration of cursors and then this, masterpiece. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this, and some of the shots are simply beautiful. I’m glad you are here to display this sort of technology and document it, otherwise I would have never known about this. I rank you amongst the best, your story telling is amazing, your music works well with what you’re showing. I am hooked!
Greetings from Noord Brabant, And thank you.
There it is, the perfect CZcams video. Narration, topic, shots, lighting, closeups, story and music. All the work you put into this really paid off, an impressive and exciting watch. Hats off to you good sir, great work!
Thanks, I didn't know that the best way to create psychedelic images is to film really close an old calculator.
"You've been staring at a calculator screen for almost 4 minutes now" yeah I know and I want an hour video of this now
5:55
Me: *Vibing the background music
*video cuts to the cutting machine clip
Me: 😴 -> 😫
Can we also just appreciate how far video compression technologies have come? CZcams has upped their game so much this would have looked quite noise a few years ago. Thank you so much for sharing.
quite the opposite, 1080p video used to have much higher bitrate. they downgraded massively in 2019, i think. now to get decent quality you HAVE to upload at 4k
There's something so retro-ish about the production. Like one of those educational films you'd see in school. Love it.
The CZcams compression does not do this justice. These are beautiful.
The cinematography, the visuals, the narration, the voice, the choice of words, the music, with a pinch of comedy.
This the work of an amazing mind. So mesmerizing.
I almost cry watching this beauty. You make me see LCDs as some kind of "microscopic organic live art" or something, i am really shocked.
Congratulations on a splendidly produced video & soundtrack! Heartening to find others who appreciate this particular display tech cul-de-sac.
Having a - slightly too large - collection of calculators that use COS/DSM displays I was a little distressed to see the EL-808 getting the Dremel treatment - even if it is a fairly common model...
Another COS calculator model, the sharp EL-805 was notable for not only being the first pocket LCD calculator, but also for the extended glass substrate of the LCD being a circuit board on which all the ICs were mounted. This was a kind of chip-on glass-technology decades ahead of its time. Slightly bizarrely it was also manufactured by Elektronika in the USSR as the Б3-04 - presumably under license from Sharp. Please do not Dremel any of these - they are RARE! :)
I see others have noted the sadly short lived Sharp PNLC LCD..- here are a couple more links. Sharp also produced a larger version used on the back of the 6228 cell phone sold only in Japan - it is even rarer than EL805s...

Your music, paired with the visuals at around 6:56 was absolutely hypnotizing, it gave me goosebumps
This is without a doubt, the most valuable channel I've subscribed for a long while. Such good narration.
Sharp actually STILL makes DSM LCDs. Some of the smaller "memory LCDs" from them exhibit this mirror/diffused transition. For example the LS013B4DN04
Just discovered this, everything has been said in these comments. Magnificent visuals, sublime music (found you on Apple Music and am very curious to listen to more tracks), plus it shows and explains LCDs in a… ok, enough superlatives. But yeah, so great! Thank you! Oh, and that Segmented Segments album (2022), I also love the picture there with artistic and colourful LCDs. 😀
I’m glad your segmented displays video was recommended to me, having a great time watching the backlog - you clearly deserve the exposure :)
This is one of my all-time favourite videos.... I love the blend of art and education, the quality of the filming, the subject matter and the soundtrack. I could happily watch stuff like this for hours.
This gave me some serious 'Secret Life of Machines' vibes, and I love it. What spectacular cinematography and perfectly paired wondrous music, and for a subject I'm deeply fond of: Old electronics.
Thank you so very much for crafting this piece of art, Mr. Posy.
Thank you :)
Watching these videos bring me pure joy. Please don't stop making them.
The best video I have ever seen on CZcams and that's just the beginning.
The information is the best.
I work on quartz watches.
Never seen anything like your work.
Thank you.
Thank you! :)
My DSM watch featured in this awesome film sadly isnt wearable anymore. Display failed. Thank god this amazing video was made.
Oh no 😥 And thank you! ;) Yes filming it can at least 'virtually preserve' a product.
by far one of the best informative and curiosity videos I've seen in a while, I'm currently binge watching the entire channel. These LCD are awesome, thanks for that man
Now i want a mirror with a clock
I just discovered your channel, and this was the first video I watched. The images you captured here are absolutely incredible. Thank you very much for this.
Super impressed you made an entire album to accompany this video. This entire piece is good vibes.
i thought i was on a LSD trip at times with the music and the visuals. absolutely incredible work!
My man... that was one of the most exceptional videos I've ever seen. Considering the subject matter, that could have easily been botched to hell. But I stayed to the very end. The music, the narration, the whole thing. Really, really good. Thank you so much. That must have taken a lot of effort, but you made it look easy and seamless. Bravo 👍
Completely forgot I subscribed to this, very nice surprise. So glad you made more :)
oh my god, your video and cinematography is so good, i know you posted this 3 years ago but i just dozed off listening and watching this
Love it! beautifully presented and a great look into the history of our electronics. You have a great artistic eye and an appreciation for the path we forge.
I looked at desktop calculators that ran on mains power at a trade show in 1970, they had NIXIE tubes and cost over a thousand dollars which was a lot of money then. The annual salary of a factory worker was something like $60 per week.
In those days we used slide rules and log books which was a PITA. I owned a hand held calculator in 1975 (ten digits) which had an electroluminescent display. In my opinion, the worst calculator was the Sharp Elsi-Mate which only displayed 4 digits at a time and alternated with the other digits and cost something like $300.
your voice is soooo nice to listen to, and combined with the awesome music and stunning macro visuals, these videos are a treat for the senses. many thanks for making these awesome videos!
I love how you share knowledge about subjects that literally are around us everyday day since always and finally we don't know much about
I use to say future is now, stop dreaming about flying cars, hoverboards, holograms screens etc..
We're already surrounded by amazing things and thanks you to showing it by the beautiful way you do
Greetings from France ⚓🌞
My brain at 0230: Hey, you ever wonder what LCD looks like really close up?
Absolutely
I’m on a binge. This is god tier content. Just wow.
How this Channel has passed me by !? Insane editing, shots, vulgarisation, etc... Then WTF, you composed youreself this beautiful soundtrack! You're a beast
This is an incredibly good video. I discovered you last night, and I'm really happy I kept your page up. I've watched several of your videos so far, and each one is fantastic.
This is some of the most relaxing content I've ever watched. I could listen to you talk about anything.
How can this exquisite bit of art have so few views? The aesthetic, the polish, the quirks. And the beauty of those LCDs. How such a mundane thing could be such a source of beauty. Please keep making things.
This is one of my favourite videos! I always come back to this :> thank you posy
I have to say that it’s the first time someone says in a video “…continues at …” and I cant skip it. That lcd zoom was amazing, I instantly became addicted to it, simply beautiful
This is honestly some of the best content on CZcams. The quality is so good in every aspect and the music is fantastic. Amazing work
Such amazing camerawork, music, narration, information, etc... I love this channel
I'm so glad I ran into your channel. Mesmerising voice and really cool and soothing videos!
Posy:
"Let's just push the limit a little further"

For years and years I have been trying to understand how LCDs work, and you explained it perfectly in just a few minutes! I don't know why I haven't heard of your channel earlier. Great Work!
Such a high quality production it's crazy. , I'm so happy I found you channel
I too find fascination and joy in mundanity and the microscopic. Your calm and well-humoured delivery give your vids such an ambiance and draw - why did it take me so long to find you? subbed
I am so grateful I discovered your channel. Your knowledge and ESPECIALLY your musical style fascinate me. Reminds me of múm in their early years. Experimental and beautiful.
Never stop being who you are, Posy. I love what you do so much, its fucking beautiful and inspiring.
omfg WHY IS THIS SERIES NO GOING VIRAL YET??????? It's so interesting and so well made!! Thanks!!
love the music in this, as well as the documentary itself! great work!!
Your videos are so calm and cool to watch
So informative but laid back
All the footage is absolutely amazing too
I am delighted with your videos. They are very well made and hypnotizing. Congratulations!
Something about the combination of narration, music, and visuals of your videos makes them completely hypnotizing to me. I haven’t really found anything else quite like them.
idk why i watched 12 minutes about LCD display, but I loved every second of it, the cinematography, the voice, worth it.
I love the soundscapes you create in your videos, they have caused me to subscribe
The way the old liquid crystal refracts the light is mesmerising
I’ll happily wait if the content is this good! You have a real knack for video making/narration 10/10.
I fell in love with your channel!
Also, I'm enchanted with the closeups. So utterly mesmerising.
The quality of these videos is just phenomenal. This is the kind of level I'd expect on a high quality TV broadcast documentary.
Incredible video! Your channel is such good blend of design, art, engineering.
The music is so beautifully fitting and the content is awesome. Thank You.
The cut to the dremel cut off tool had me ded. Amazing video. You are the new age Bill Nye.
I come back every now and then and rewatch this video like one does a favorite movie. It's so unique, informative, and cool!
This is one of the coolest videos i have legit ever seen on CZcams, the music made it a real experience too! Your videos continue to amaze me!
i'm usually not one for video essays, but your style is really super cool. reminds me of those older relaxing historical documentaries
You are an underrated channel!! Your voice is relaxing, great audio quality, and great informative vids!!
That voice is so calming and grasping, I almost fell asleep staring at the screen. This is some hight quality stuff right here
Wow, this was some of the best video production I've seen in a long time. Pure art. Glad I decided to get curious about more details on this technology and found this..
The music adds this kind of dark, myterious, enclosed atmosphere I enjoy in some documentaries, it does add a big source of interest
your videos are a gold mine. The algorithm blessed me with your segmented display video, hopefully it keeps recommending people your videos.
I think I've just found a new favourite youtube channel. Love this guy's style, editing, music.
I'm so glad I was recommended this channel.. Amazing teaching skills and very entertaining! Thank you :)
Amazing production on your videos! That was very entertaining, educational and most of all - beautiful!
Man! I would be content with just your voice and the soundtrack!
You are indeed something special 😎👌🏼a superb presentation.
Your videos are so mesmerazing! Your voice and accent is like caress for me, and visual aspect is just a pure art! Your channel - what a discovery! 😮
Your vids are simply amazing! I really enjoyed the music going along with the exquisite visuals
you sir are an INCREDIBLE musician. i loved the music equally as much as the video!
The music in this was absolutely phenomenal. Great work, and you've definitely earned a subscription from me!
It's the little details like putting when narration would begin again that I appreciate. Although I'd be surprised if anyone bypassed that mesmerizing footage. I blanked out, I had no idea I was watching that for a few minutes strait.
These videos are so well done, from narration to music, editing, education, all of it. I had no choice but to subscribe.
This videos' title should read "DMT LSD (like) you never seen"
Daaamn that's trippy!
Between the awesome topic and your voice im so in awe with your channel
Your video actually hypnotized me i was so focused on it. Amazing content.
Your videos are amazing and I love them, the music and sound videos are my favorite and are very inspiring
INCREDIBLY amazing production quality. Very very nice!
