FIRST DRIVE: Ferrari 296 GTB - 819bhp turbo-hybrid supercar | Top Gear

- čas přidán 5. 03. 2022
- This is the Ferrari 296 GTB. It is a deeply, furiously complex car. A 819bhp turbo-hybrid six-cylinder supercar that can also run silently on electricity. A £241,550 Dino successor that slots into the mid-engined ‘everyday’ Ferrari lineage that started with the 308 47 years ago and has continued without interruption - and with some legendary highlights, including the 458 Speciale - ever since. Could it be one of the best prancing horses ever? Top Gear Magazine’s Head of Car Testing - Ollie Marriage - takes it on road and track to find out…

they weren't lying when they said that this new V6 sounds like a baby V12, I'm impressed
Well a v6 isssssss essentially a baby b12
No it doesn't, sounds like a V6. What a silly comparison.
@@bishop94z and it should. Wide angle v6s with even firing orders. Should sound much like the Alfa Quad too (also a 90* V6)
am then someone is gonna straight pipe one of these and it’s probably gonna sound like a 350z
@@BGRUBBIN agree
I am so impressed on how close the V6 sounds like half a V12, even with the turbos and the mufflers, this engine is quite astonishing.
It's a 120 degree V angle, the combustion events are therefore evenly spaced much like a sixty degree V12 or an inline 6 for that matter. That's how they did it
Maybe because it IS half a V12 😉
@@fokjohnpainkiller Interesting how the V angle affects the timing. I had no idea.
As a 812 owner and having spent time with this car, I can confirm it sounds nothing like a V12. Perfectly nice enough; better than an F8, but a n/a V12 it is not.
.
With the launch of the 296, I feel Ferrari is seriously back on track again.. As new as the 296 is from an engineering standpoint, something about it seems so purely Ferrari - such a thorough and beautifully put-together machine. Proper powertrain, stunning looks, clearly an exhilarating but approachable driving experience. Definitely my favorite new sports car.
Interesting way to say "We learned from Ford how to turbo a V6 and make a fast car"
@@Voevoden ...and manage to make that not awfully overpriced!
@@Simone-bk9os Actually, We were all wrong. I just talked to Benedetoo, and he said that they learned it from Boosted Boiz' 240 burnout car setup with a J-series Honda + 2 ebay turbos ;P
Absolutely. The exterior design looks old school and modern at the same time somehow. It's super cool.
@@E90_Alpine_White Yes exactly!
The 296 is awesome. It actually really beautiful. Reminds of the older Ferraris
Looks amazing in yellow
Minus the fact it has a hyped up Prius motor. Give me a V8, manual and no traction control please.
@@garrettmeifert3333 they stopped making manual only since 355, so you can forget about it
@@garrettmeifert3333 they haven’t even had a manual as an option since the 430/599 and those are crazy rare.
@@garrettmeifert3333 it's all yours if you can invent a time machine and go back to the past
I love this motor. Yet, I dream of the universe where this has a newly developed 4999cc naturally aspirated V8 revving to 10,000rpm and the flawless torque curve with the electric motor torque filling.
Then the GMA T.50 is what you are dreaming about.
@@jannadrielcervo7753 doesn't it have a v12 tho?
@@alantryhard8632 Yeah so? Why not? Like Jeremy Clarkson said "That's a V8, that's a V10, and that's a V12. More is better."
GMA T50 and Valkyrie are as close as you'll ever get to that. I dunno if we'll ever see a 911 GT3 hybrid.
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks Pffft, of course the GT3 will eventually either become a hybrid, or have a hybrid option. What do you think the purpose was in making the 918? It was a project with the goal of establishing the foundation of the brand's hybridization in order to meet emission regulations. The Taycan is another car that proves that we will definitely see a hybrid variation of the GT3 eventually. There's really no reason NOT to do so, so long as there is still an ICE of some sort to produce a familiar and enticing engine note.
It's absolutely beautiful. That red has to be the most beautiful paint... in the world.
This guy is a seriously good driver! And a great presenter.
one thing i noticed to, he's absolutely HOONING this car while talking, my man was taking curves at high speeds while answering questions !
Let’s pull over and take a closer look at the cabin. Pulls over. Shows us a tilting seat and a erm… Froot? Frunk? But no cabin view. Gee, thanks…. 🙄
Same cabin as roma
Begs the question, why is the SF90’s overall design messy, compared to this? This is just gorgeous, like the 458 Italia.
It’s the rear arches and the rear as a whole that does it for me, the front is ok but the rear with the Dino looking arches sets it off. The sf90 is a mess
I hated the sf90 from the start
@@Hello_there_obi I went to a Ferrari dealership a while back and heard a woman
onlooker saying how good the sf90 looks. My wife thought it was the best looking car out of massive range of 488s, F12s, GTC Lussos, (which was deemed ugly by my wife and the bystander) and so on. If you see cars in the flesh, your opinions can change. I've always thought the sf90's looks
were all right, but not spectacular. A bit too compact looking. The 296 GTB, with its elegant lines, is certainly an improvement in the looks department,
but I reckon rounded front lights would be better as it has a rear that pays homage to the 250 LM.
@@gul201210 and does you wife have a massive passion for supercars and automotive design?
I’ll admit that it’s well proportioned but the nose is way too fussy, it looks like a corvette and the back is completely wrong. 458 was the last truly beautiful ferrari. Perfectly sculpted nose and proportions and a proper ferrari back end.
The sf90 looks like a parody of a ferrari by corvette. If I showed it to someone with a different badge the wouldn’t be sure if it was actually a ferrari. That’s my other gripe. Ferraris design language seems watered down with it. And it weighs too much as well.
The silver on the nose that looks out of a JC Whitney catalogue
remember when the 1001 hp of the Veyron was something astonoshing ? ( that's pure madness )
And now you have minivans rolling out of the factory more powerful than that... Crazy times!
what are you talking about? it is still astonishing, just because modern cars are being released with more and more horse power out of the factory doesn't make the veyron's figures any less impressive wth
@@JoseRodriguez-ey7ju yeah , you right , but I just wanted to say that the automotive industry is moving at an incredible speed, but you are 100% right, the Veyron is a marvel of engineering
6:16 ignore the front of the car for a sec, and focus on the B pillar and rearwards to the tail. that looks a lot like Ferrari's old nemesis, the Ford GT40.
Thank you for that comment. Was thinking I was the only one seeing it till I stumbled upon this!
I love this thing, I like the exterior that breaks the mid engine trend of just putting more stuff on a 458 that they were doing. This design is quite elegant and beautiful, I especially like the back. I also love that ferrari set out to make a car that is fun to drive first and lap times second (see SF90 for opposite), a real drivers car that just happens to have 812 hp of high revving engine with low end electric torque. I hope this doesn't get discounted by people being snobbish about cylinder count, does it really matter if it sounds and drives good?
I could very rightly be called a cylinder snob, and I was extremely sceptical about this car when it first got revealed. But seeing it in action, hearing it bellow like the 812, I've been won over by it! Might just creep onto my shortlist. But chances are i'll stick with the pre-owned 458.
Idk about the sf90. Unless you’ve driven it its speed alone seems exhilarating enough to make it “fun”. Honestly it depends on the driver
Those drone shots are insane
That shot at 3:15 is absolutely crazy.....Kudos to the team
I was thinking the same thing
Whenever I click on a Top gear review and Chris isn't doing it, I feel huge disappointment.
same but this dude is pretty good actually
Impressed with how good it sounds
Apart from everything else, this is also a lesson in design. Initialy I wasnt convinced, but I like it more and more. Someone said that a good design should look just a little bit odd- and this new Ferrari does exactly that.
It seems to intrigue us more if u have to think about it a bit. Like in music, if it’s to easy, i feel like you’d be bored of it faster.
Something about it looks like the Ford GT. Looks dynamically excellent, I just can't wrap my head around a V6 in a Ferrari.
Dino
My thoughts exactly
Big engines are pointless these days.
I thought the same thing, looks a little too American. A bit of Ford GT and a bit of new Corvette, maybe this one’s unfortunately designed for that market
@@cobass "That's not a Ferrari." Clarkson.
Now that’s the way a review works! I’ve previously seen one where it was just an opportunity for the reviewer to have fun on the track…barely learned anything about the car’s dynamics, livability, interior, etc. Cheers. And, yes, I’m desperate for this car!
Imagine the disappointment of being lucky enough to see one of this on the road and it being in electric mode.
Sound is one of the most thrilling things about these cars. Specially for us, pedestrians!
That just happened to me, seen a yellow one, looks unreal compared to all the normal cars around me. Dead silent
Most interesting Ferrari in a long time, an actual sports car. And somewhat futureproofed. If only I had the money...
Idk the sf90 is a very interesting Ferrari imo
@@fifteen8850 it's faster, but I would have more fun in the 296.
@@davevan9150 so you say lol
Probably my most favorite hybrid system.
Love the closing shot ! A very appropriate way to close :) Great review, thanks 🙏
Wait a minute. This costs *more* than the F8?! I'll take the F8 and it's V8 any day, every day!
same here, because its missing 2 cylinders, I dont want it, even if its faster. I just dont care about it.
I would normally agree with you, because nobody has ever successfully downsized and turboed and ended up with a better sounding engine.
But today I argue that this engine sounds better than the F8. But not the 458.
Yeah right. Ok even if you have the money, Ferrari decides who to sell their cars to, those mafiosos.
V8's for life!!!!!!!!
@@88JohnnyB very stubborn
i always liked this car since the beginning, is so simple and minimalistic
I am in Love with the design and functionality of this car. How ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS.
Wow 🤯
On a side note, check out the camera work in this video, it is so incredible I found myself rewinding bits just to try and figure out how they’re doing it..
Congratulations TG, Maranello owes you big time for such an amazing advert… I’m a kid again, wanting, imagining, dreaming that I own this car… 😍
Love the contrast between the mic in the cabin vs the mic you've stuck in the enginebay lmao
I really like the old styling. It really reminds me of the Dino / GT40 / Muira. I always felt Ferrari had been lost since the F-40 really (design wise). I guess the 458 was pleasing to look at. For me, I have to have goosebumps when I look at a super car. And yeah this one definately delivers. I like it...
The F12, 458 and LaFerrari were brilliant.
It’s a very mature design this, almost too civil but I think it will grow over time. I love that for once a new car is actually a bit smaller than it’s predecessor.
How they managed to get that sound out of a modern V6 is beyond me.
This guy makes the entire experience of watching such a nice car un enjoyable
Oh man I hate that two tone bonnet and bumper they're doing on these and the SF90... It's just hideous, totally ruins the lines of it.
I’m hyped to see a drag race of the new models on carwow. Hope Matt gets all the models lined up, would be so cool to see.
same
Bravo to the video capture. Some superb shots worthy of a no budget ferrari advert
Oh, I can't wait for the GTS! A 296 without a roof sounds like a dream.
I love the top mounted exhaust..I'm a huge fan of the configuration but I wonder how much mechanics enjoy it lol
I just received mine 2 weeks ago in black Nero with yellow stitching. I wish they would have expanded more on the hybrid mode. Yes, you only get 15 miles of electric but when you put it in “Qualifying mode”, it completely charges it back up to 15 miles within about 15 minutes while driving….which is EXTREMELY FAST. It has already saved me so much money in gas. As soon as electric runs out, it switches to gas and within 15 minutes I’m already back to electric mode. It really saves a lot.
Last shot was stunning. Beautiful car.
Wow, what a car. I have ever bought Porsches and Audis in Germany, but i will check this one.
gonna love when people on the street ask if this is the new Corvette !
Those taillights certainly look vette-ish. The rest of the car looks pretty good. Can't wait to see it in the metal.
Ah yes, the american cheap copy of Ferrari
I noticed that in all the tests that came out today there was not as much enthusiasm and excitement as in the tests you did for the Maserati mc20 !!!!
What an amazing Outro.! Give that cameraman and Editor a raise.
I'm 6'4", and fit in it just fine. Got at least 1.5" of head room. And it's a really cool looking car!
My F8 Tributo will be more beautiful, though, tbh! (Imo)
IMO the Pista is the best looking
@@brakinglate8828 The Pista is hardcore looking, for sure
As a fellow tall guy, good to know that I'd fit if I ever get the chance to drive one of these beautiful machines lol

I miss the days where every car review embargo Chris Harris releases a video!
Chris Harris does nothing but complain about cars being too modern now, I'm glad there's less of him on the channel
@@defnotatroll Well he makes sense so why not....
@@defnotatroll he's not wrong though
@@thisnameistoolong9169 yea but that gets old, and that really isn't insightful at all. It's just old man yells at cloud
@@defnotatroll you're probably right but I don't think he's always negative for example he was pretty positive about the E-tron, M2 and M5 CS. Those are pretty modern by any measure
Can someone explain the hybrid engine to me? So with these new engines you still only fill the tank with gas and don't need to charge them like an electric car right? I've read that the battery is charged from braking and other stuff, right? What's the point of these new engines and why are they making them if people prefer the old kinds?
We test drove one 2 months ago at Redwood City Ca. It was a great car! We both love it!
It's design, engine, sound ...........all of this car is so appealing!
There aren‘t many (super)cars I would actually like to buy/own, but this? I really want one!
You can tell it's an amazing car.
Dont like where Ferrari's have gone tho in terms of design.
Just doesn't have the wow factor that it once did
When i first saw the video i was hoping that it wasnt a hybrid enemy chris harris review, thank you top gear
Great review, thanks!
Such a beautiful spec. The Italians sure know how to make a pretty car.
Can’t wait for the Drivetribe edition.
It's a shame that the front end looks like a 1993 Camaro.
Absolutely !!! and will never hold a candle to a 458
car is the 2nd best looking in the current lineup IMO (behind the 812) but they should have called it "the Dino 296". The v6 sounds awesome, a very tall task for a v6 engine especially a turbo one.
Money no object, if I could only own one Ferrari, I said it would be a manual F430… but I forgot about the 575 and I changed my mind. But after seeing this 296 GTB sans Assetto Fiorano pack, this is now my all-time favorite Ferrari. This is the one
The camera work the quality of the cinematography perfect. The host comes in and puts you to sleep. 😴
Personally, I'm not the absolute biggest Ferrari fan, but I'm deeply impressed with this. I can't wait to see how it stacks up in the V6 supercar competition. Also, this is just my opinion, but I personally think that Ferrari should work on that front end. It's definitely not the best angle.
Damn imagine if hammond was the one to review this
...it twas absolutely FUN having you in the PILOTI seat!
love the ending scene. in comparison, where is it vs GT-40, the new one? they both v6
This dude knows how to do it. Sharp stuff. :)
An exciting good looking Ferrari. First mid engine Ferrari I like the look of since the 458.
I agree and I’ll be finally replacing my 458 with the spider version of this when it’s released
great video, but why does the quality not look 1080p? again, lovely review
I am happy to announce that my RAV4 Hybrid has now something in common with the Ferrari!
Where do you buy the new batteries, and how much do they cost
Love how they got the classic Music in the background 😩
how does ferrari get the sound right every time
💜Beautiful editing 💚God bless you and love you guys❤️
Can’t wait until they make a track focused version taking hints from the 296 GT3. That machine is going to be amazing. Please Ferrari take my 💰
Impressive that the power output of the 296 is close to a 918 from a few years ago while being "cheaper". A comparison with the McLaren Artura would be nice too since the NSX ceased production.
The Artura is not really the competition, wait for the 720s replacement, thats a note fitting comparison.
Btw if anyone wants to know what the sound is that starts at 0:19 , it's Nocturne op.9 no.2 (by Frédéric Chopin)
You´ve saved me. Thanks
You can axe the TV show. I enjoy this more.
Quality to the point journalism ✅
Speaks English in an understandable dialect ✅
just add Chris Harris for some episodes.
Almost 10 years still using Italia body design/ chassis principle.
F430 Scuderia is my millennial favourite.
Loving this car and the review. Thanks !
I can't believe this car is a V6 putting out that much horsepower in a lightweight package I'm loving were Ferraris going
This is an amazing car and I want one. Great job Ferrari you knocked this one out of the park.
_"It's so tail-happy at the back"_ -- as opposed to being tail-happy at the front? :-D
The side profile looks uncannily similar to a lotus Evora !
From the front 3/4 view (in the dark red color), it looks like a Mazda MX-6 from 30+ years ago.
Fantastic car and success on site!
It looks like you were driving on a portuguese road... 🤔
Can't wait to see what the GT3 version looks like.
It will be exciting to see a comparison NSX type S amd this FERRARI. Both V6 and Hybrid.
NSX features 3 electric motors, this Ferrari 1 only
Then the comparison challenge is much better since NSX was always been compared to purely petrol engine cars such as Audi R10 or Lamborghi Huracan or Porsche 911 bur never with a hybrid.
I really love the design of this Ferrari. In my eyes it’s more beautiful than a 488 or a F8.
"It's so tail happy at the back!" Don't you just hate those cars that are tail happy at the front?
the side view of this evokes the 308 in a very good way.
The beginning of the end, these hybrids will never sound half as good as real engines.
just gonna point it out again: a ROAD car should have the shift paddles FIXED to the column! like this one. It's also gorgeous!
His reviews are always way better than the televised presenter ones
We all know top gear is on life support after the trio left
@@nomiguda well blame Clarkson for starting it's decline then. Shouldn't have punched the producer
I feel like the spider will be the version of this to have since the coupe already kind of looks like a spider. But I won’t have either lol 😂
Him: i think its a really really good piece of design
Me: i think it is a catfish 😝😝 w/o mustache
It looks like Ferrari have made a modern winner there, some people in the comments are having trouble getting their heads around no V12, I don't see the problem, any engine that makes over 200hp per litre is good with me.
The only reason a V6 is no good is the sound; which is usually a result of crankshaft balancing necessitated by a 90-degree V angle combined with the 6-cylinder firing order. 60-degree or 120-degree V6 engines are *chefs kiss*
A Ferrari should be alert and "easy to drive"...huh?🤨 And all those rocks as he kicks off while spinning the wheels created some rock chips I'm sure devaluing the car about 100 grand now 🤣
Very nice presentation of an interesting thesis. We shall see if the public will buy this thesis. :-)
10:09 that shot ! this car is beautiful , sure they can refine the nose, rear lights in the facelift or wtv. But it is genuinely striking and elegant. People are quick to dismiss any new change, " camaro, ford GT " but looking away at a fresher retro modern effort. BMW tried it and failed with no proportionate care or flow.
A production value such as top gear showcasing a car that looks this good and it's been decided to use 1080p when 4k is standard now?
What's the name of the piano song in the beginning?
Qué maravilla de coche, cada vez que Ferrari saca un modelo nuevo se supera. ¡Forza Ferrari siempre!.-
