10:41 "McLaren notwithstanding". I know anecdotes are practically worthless, and even more so when they come from anon guys over the Internet but let me just say this for what it's worth. I bought my single previous owner McLaren 12C exactly 6 years old with about 10,000km (6000 miles) on the clock. The previous owner didn't drive it much, but it was trouble-free. I've driven it for 1 year and 5 months to the day and put another 15,000km (9000 miles) on it. It's daily driven (unfortunately stop-go traffic with short trips is the norm as I live in Singapore), and I also use it for driving up to Malaysia including highway blasts, B road drives and track days at the Sepang former F1 circuit.
A big knock on wood moment here - but the car has been flawless. Completely trouble free. I've still maintained the warranty with McLaren Singapore (and it's very expensive) but the car has needed practically nothing other than routine oil and gearbox servicing and tyre changes. It's the best exotic I've ever owned and I love it.
I've never had a Lambo (am considering an Aventador for my next car) but for what it's worth, here's my experience with other exotics. A Ferrari F430 with the paddles I had a few years back was also daily driven by I gave it up after only 3 months because it kept giving error codes (even though the PPI was fine and the car had been maintained). I also hated the gearbox in that car. Given the ridiculous policies in Singapore, I had to export the car after it reached ten years of age, so I cut my losses and did just that I actually made a bit of money on the trade for a new Merc AMG GT. Not sure if that would be considered an exotic, but it gave gearbox errors right out the box (needed a recode) and a fuel rail issue later (needed replacement under warranty). My 911 which I had a few years back gave non - stop issues with the soft top and the final straw came with a brake master cylinder failure.
Long story short: my McLaren has been the most enjoyable and reliable exotic/supercar to date. Now let's hope I haven't jinxed anything! 😂

While not the most exotic, I daily drove an NSX for over a year through LA traffic, nights out, and even getting groceries. The funny bits about friends asking if your car can make it into certain garages, or even making mundane commutes a bit more exciting, are all relatable. Life’s too short to avoid putting miles on a nice car. In the case of my Acura, that thing would probably outlive me if it continued to be well maintained.

I daily a 2010 E63 AMG and it is hands down one of the best daily drivers I think. You get all the pros that you think and the only cons really are minor. Parts are slightly more expensive, and preventive maintenance is always a good idea if you want it to be nearly Japanese reliable. If you do all the maintenance yourself you have nothing to worry about.

I also owned a rock solid, comfy Camry. Rain, hail or shine, I'd take the bike over the car whenever it was humanly possible, including a cross country road trip. I totally get the idea of motoring masochism.

This is a great explanation of why we do what we do as car guys. Well done as always Ed.
I got my 1986 Z31 back in November and just finished taking it on a 12,000 mile road trip around the country. It's about the adventure, the enjoyment of driving the car, the mystery of what will need fixed next, and just seeing if the old man can still jump in and run with the best. If i had taken my delivery car, my subaru, (5mt '08 impreza) sure it can be fun at times, but i would have been bored to death the first couple thousand miles and would just stop there. It's not about what's out there that's the most practical, it's about what is out there that's most enjoyable to drive.

I have the mechanics version of this automotive disorder, as I still do retain my B5 S4. Admittedly, there may be a small, more reliable DD fleet to accompany it. Worthy to note it is the most reliable B5 in the nation. Only 1 engine out in 130,000mi. Call Guinness!

Louis Subearth Flipping cars is harder then it sounds, cars are not fully predictable, one unaccounted for item can cost you all your profits. As well I’m from the rust belt of Canada, used cars here often need more then their value in parts alone to make them safe and reliable. (parts cost a lot more here too) I’ll stick to making youtube videos, maybe one day that’ll give me the chance to at least drive some of those exotics.
