Think of it this way Ed, you and that car were like a young inexperienced couple. You found each other, had one particular use for each other, and parted ways. In the end, your experience with each other helped you both grow into what you are now. You can both look at the other and admire what they’ve become.

As you said in the vid... what did that 75k finance? Didnt get that early flip? You wouldnt have had as much time to focus on vin wiki or the early car stories that blew up the channel.
Sure, you might have had the RUF now, but then maybe not any gated murci, or the chance to sit where Hilton sat.
Plus, as you pointed out, it took over 50k just to get the car sorted? So you would have had what... a year at least of a terrible car? And then just sitting not being driven leading to more problems? That is the type of experience that kills the automotive passion. You would have had a million dollar RUF, but most likely not the love of the hobby you have now.

Edit reply: If will be at the auction for car trek 7, I think your story could help the value, plus the bit of personal reflection after would make for a very interesting side narrative as part of an episode. maybe I'm just cynical, but I have a feeling that white RUF sold at the price it did to manipulate the price of the black RUF being sold at auction. Then they will sell the white car again if they get get a good price for the black RUF, for even more because the price has now been established. There is no other reason to pay that much for the car.

I bought a rare Webley-Fosbery Auto revolver for 275 dollars and sold it for 450 dollars when I was hard up for money (a constant problem for me). Thirty years later it was selling for 10 grand. And yet I still miss it for what it was (coolest pistol ever, you can see one in the 1942 Maltese Falcon with Bogart) not what is now "worth". The problem is that so many people get so caught up in refusing to sell except for ridiculous numbers more because they are terrified they will get "beat" on a deal rather than actually selling for what the item is worth "at the time". Ed's deal is just part of the timing of life and you can tell he really isn't feeling bad about it, he knows that the deal of a century comes by every week when you are wheeling an dealing and Ed is a wheeler dealer.

The worst thing about this is how out of reach anything interesting is getting, Hoovie has been saying the same thing recently.
even the starter fun cars are so far out of reach for young enthusiasts they are gonna die out.

Yup. I'm really into Golf 2's in particular. I bought my GTI Edition One 5 years ago for 4,5k (mind you that was already A LOT for that car in the condition). I recently checked listings and even non GTI models are sitting at 6-8k. For a fucking Golf

When you drive these in Gran Turismo and you adjust the suspension settings on the Nurburgring, no matter what you do you can't ever get the RUFs to behave to the track. I've driven many miles on these and it's all the same story. Still some of my favs rear engine track cars, but man are these death machines!

It's not an exotic, but I was thrilled to sell my '84 CJ7 Jeep in 2002 for $250 less than what I had paid for it after owning it, and thoroughly using it off road, for nine-years. I really loved the Jeep, but I wanted something newer and more comfortable for a daily driver. Lately I've been looking for another one. I sold mine for $4,750 but I can't find one anywhere near as nice as mine was for less than $10,000 and people are asking as much as $20,000 for really nice examples. At least I bought my vintage convertible VW Beetle at the right time, and I plan to hang onto it for a while.

Can't wait for the next cartrek, I have a suggestion for the next one. A "crap to Cool" challenge. You have to buy each other the uncoolest car possible (think 80s Volvo type car). You then get 1 week, $10000 and a shop of your choice to help to make it cool and prepare it for the challenges. Just a thought
