N'zoth should have been what they're trying to make the Jailer. A master planner who subtly had his hand in every plot since Warcraft 3, all building up to his release at the end of BFA, then they should have made a whole expansion dedicated to fighting the full might of an unleashed Old God. I mean, for years, the two major villains of wow were the Burning Legion and the Old Gods, so it's just a disappointment that the last Old God we faced, who was built up since Cata, ended up only being a real threat in a single patch where he was only present in two zones, and then got blown up by walmart bargain bin anime blast.

They could of maybe make his presence more noticeable throughout the expansion so that stuff like the faction war would feel more like a ticking time bomb for N'Zoth to take over azeroth instead of just making his move during a single patch and also getting yeeted in that same patch.

Watch Asmongold react to the Warbringers: Azshara cinematic from a few years ago and see how excited he was. N'Zoth had this really creepy and soft voice communicating with Azshara. The 8.3 voice lines are cool in their own way but his voice kinda ended up sounding like evil Barry White.
The build up during 9.1.5 and his release in 9.2 was hype as fuck. But 8.3 just felt weak because how they decided to only let him manifest in two key locations where there was old titan reorigination tech. And the ending cinematic... OH GOD NO

Eh, Archimonde is one of the cases when writers clearly did not signalised his personality enough in-game despite him having one.
There is some quests on Macaree (or how it called nowadays) and in Legion as a whole which tells us some additional info about him. Iirc he was not only the most brutish leader of the Eredar but also the most curious one, because he as a scholar found Void powers by himself and even contacted Nathrezim before Sargeras came. Also he executed gambit to overthrow his former master Talkiel and all of that was way before Burning Legion deal. Last but not least he was the only one who immediatly recognized Sargeras' intentions unlike KJ who was simply fooled. But Archimode was just cool with that because in the end of the day he is a power hungry psychopath, which is understandable for somebody that strong and that smart.
Tl;dr Archimonde is way cooler that he seems to be, but to to acknowledge it you need to do some lore dig and make some assumptions.

Archimonde was quite a good villain in WC3 though. The way he gave his speech when he entered the world and straight up continued to destroy Dalaran, then just orders around both the leader of the dreadlords and pit lords to do his dirty work, and how close he got to succeed in destroying the world tree which caused all the factions to unite against him just to hold him off. @WBlake01 Před 2 lety +3

You put it perfectly. I remember all the effort that went into summoning him too; it was half the purpose of the Scourge. When they succeeded he just stepped in, made light of all the high civilization/magic of Dalaran - which had been huge thorn in the Legions' side for so long - and proceeded to destroy their city like one would a sandcastle! There's not too much explicit buildup - his evil kind of gravitas spoke for itself. That's how you write a villain that is in a league of his own in terms of power. Very hard to make it cool and not cheesy(any 'surprise tier' TV villain); not overly expected and overemphasized(yuck, Thanos) nor annoyingly out of the blue and boring(sigh, Jailer). Also there's not that many 'Great General' archetypes in fiction that I know of, but these are some of the coolest characters in real world history.

Ner'zhul to me added so much to Arthas's fall to the Lich King.
The original Warcraft being "orcs vs humans" and the spirit of that was fully embodied in the two major heroes of the humans / orcs becoming one through the powers of the forzen throne.
A human paladin fused with an orc warlock.
The origins of the undead is the fusion of humans with orcs. It's a nice touch.
Ner'zhul was trapped in a frozen prison and forged Frostmourne, speifically targeted Arthas to become the vessel and corrupted him.
The whole reason was simply to escape the frozen throne.

It's sad to see what became of N'zoth. I remember hearing about him in Cataclysm, and slowly over time during the next few expansions learning more about his character and what he was responsible for. Realizing that he is the true lord of the nightmare, that it was him that corrupted both Deathwing and Azshara, felt so fucking cool. The fact that he was such a huge and powerful character that was hiding somewhere at the bottom of the ocean also made it feel much more mysterious and menacing. I used to ride around for hours in Vash'jr looking for any deep places that he could possibly be located in, and I felt actual fear looking down into the black depths that are out of reach of the players realizing he might be sitting there. I think BFA rushed him and turned his character from a quiet, mysterious and menacing force similar to C'thun into a bashful, arrogant tyrant more on the lines of Deathwing or Garrosh, which was definitely not fitting for an Old God. To me, an Old God is a cold, emotionless being, something that never gets frustrated or angry as we saw in BFA. I would have also preferred fighting him deep under the ocean as opposed to fighting him in a big generic volcano land. I think N'zoth's raid was more fitting for Deathwing, and it would have been so much cooler had N'zoth been located deep below where we fought Azshara in the cold darkness of the bottom of the ocean. Had Blizzard stayed true to their original design of N'zoth, I think he would have been an S tier and by far the coolest Old God.

A common trend with a lot of these bosses is the fact they are explained outside the game, and just thrown in game with almost no background. Because Blizzard in game storytelling is rubbish. So those in higher ranks are mostly those they did a good job in developing and explaining them in game. And some of those in lower ranks are again Blizzard’s fault in making them look stupid.

      Tier lists in a nutshell.
DW has more overall impact on the world physically and narratively. An aspect who was driven mad by the whispers of the very earth he was tasked to protect. So corrupted that he tears the world asunder when set free. It's a good set up, even if it ended up flopping overall. That's on the writers...

Ner'zhul remains to this day as one of the biggest examples of how to waste an awesome character.
The guy used to be one of the franchises main villains, and is to this day the only villain who "won" 2 times in a row. Both WC2 and WC3 ended with Ner'zhul getting what he wanted. And then, from WotLK onward, Blizz just constantly shafted the guy, bc Arthas became the most popular character and they wanted to push that idea.

The next, Lady Blaumeux, calls forth the power of shadows, drawing the souls of the living into the voracious embrace. Sir Zeliek, a paladin in life, so strong in his faith, that even in undeath, the power of the light still heeds his call, smiting his foes in battle. The final death knight, Lord Mograine, was the finest warrior that the death knights had ever seen. However, after the events of Azeroth, he vanished without a trace.
