  • What’s the difference between a picky eater and ARFID, or extremely picky eating? Should we expect kids to be picky? How long does picky eating drag on? And when do kids need help?
    In this video, I’m helping you understand the difference between regular picky eating and extreme picky eating or ARFID.
    Because sometimes picky eating is totally normal and you shouldn’t freak out about it, and other times, it isn’t normal and kids need more help.
    I’ll also talk about the picky eating gene and the type of help that’s out there for extremely picky eaters.

    This video really spoke to me. I’m still not 100% sure if my 6 year old is a typical picky eater or an extreme picky eater, but this has prompted me to seek professional advice. He has a short list of about 20 foods that he will eat. His foods are across the board taste and texture wise so I’m hesitant to think it’s a sensory issue. He likes coconut Greek yogurt, but absolutely refuses to try any other flavor. He likes mozzarella cheese sticks but they have to be perfectly round. He will eat peanut butter, but refuses to try it on bread. He loves cheerios but will not eat any variety but the original. He enjoys chicken nuggets, particularly dunked in coconut Greek yogurt. But refuses to try ketchup. He becomes very upset when asked to try a new food, and really shuts down when we talk about why he doesn’t like certain foods or why he won’t try certain foods. He’s a brilliant child, growing well, very smart (I know all parents say that). But his refusal to eat normally has caused a lot of stress within our family (we try not to let him be aware of it). Going out to eat is pretty much non existent. Attending parties means packing a food bag for him because we’re not sure if there will be anything available that he will eat. Friends and family can be very judgmental as we refuse to force him to eat anything he doesn’t want, as we are afraid to create a bad relationship with food. He’s in kindergarten and I pack his lunch every day because he will not eat otherwise. My biggest concern is not really what he eats or how much as he does have a somewhat varied diet (aside from carrots and potatoes being his only vegetables) but it’s the refusal and emotional distress he displays when asked to try anything new that worries me. I’m going to search out a pediatric nutritionist in our area for a consultation. Thank you for this video. I found it very informative and helpful.

      I could have wrote this post myself. I'm going through this now with my son. He is an extremely picky eater so when we go to birthday parties or on vacation he will not eat pizza or whatever they have so I have to pack his lunch or buy what he will eat. Did your son out grow his pickiness?

    I am in my mid 30s and I still don't eat some food categories (fruit). It's less than 10 years ago that I started eating vegetables and legumes. And mainly because I started preparing them and cooking myself. Before that it was protein and carbs. Always had a very healthy weight as a child and adolescent, and adult. Do know why but I don't try foods. As far as I remember I never wanted to try new foods that did not come in a package or are eaten raw (again: fruits). I do smoothies and juices instead. I think my main problem has to do with texture. Was always labelled as a picky eater, shamed often, especially by my vegetarian father. My mum had to cook 2 foods regularly as my dad and I had complete opposite palates. Specialists were not a thing when I was a child. And it hadn't occurred to me to look into this as an adult. I've done therapy for other stuff, this never came up. I've met a lot of people over the years like that, not in my family, which made me feel it's not that weird.

    My child was a picky eater and sensory issue. She is very sensitive to smell and texture of food. I’m so stress. Before she only eat chips or biscuits food that are crunchy. But when she started to eat chocolate she loves it and then one day the chocolate stuck in her upper mouth she felt uncomfortable and cried. From then on she refuse everything. Even the chips that’s she loves or the biscuits that always eat. I’m so stress. She refuses everything since that chocolate thing caused such traumatizing feeling to her. Now she only want formula even vitamins she refuses because of the taste. Before even with it’s taste she at least trying to take. But now she refuses everything except milk.

    I can't say I agree... The key difference in between 'picky eating' or ARFID is that the latter is proven to be an eating disorder, one very quite similar to anorexia. Rather regardless of the age - when we see this behaviour in children we view it as the child being "picky". This can be dangerous for the individual who struggles with disordered eating as they're only being viewed as a "picky eater" by others in their life which can perpetuate the disordered eating.

    • @JillCastle
      @JillCastle  Před 2 lety +3

      Yes, ARFID is a classified eating disorder, but unlike anorexia or others, it is not motivated by poor body image or weight loss. I agree, some kids are overlooked and seen as picky when things are deeper.

    Thank you! My girl is almost FIFTEEN! She’s had chronic constipation most of her life. That led to a lot of stomach pain and even though she’s been getting better in the last month she is now scared to eat, especially at school. 🙁

      @JillCastle  Před 2 lety

      Ah, I hope she feels better and learns to understand where the pain comes from and how what she eats and DRINKS can help a lot with that...Eating and drinking helps move food through the body. :)

    Thank you! I'm a 14 year old and I just can eat lots of foods because I'm to afraid to try them, like hotdogs or beans. But I have tried tomatoes or mack and cheese because i threw up as a child when i ate tomatoes at school infront of everone or mack and cheese (i dont remeber why i dont eat it) But I can taste a lot more in food then my family, but it sucks because I can't eat normal things like eggs, tacos, cornbread, corn, apples, carrots, and more. I would love to try to eat more food but I'm just to afraid. :/

      Thanks for sharing. The fact that you are aware of your fear is a good place to start. :) Remember, you don't have to eat the whole thing. Even a teeny tiny bite that you chew and spit out is an accomplishment!

    I have a 2 year old who had constipation recently we went to ER and she had enema that helped her that night. I blame myself for allowing my child to only have fried chicken on every meal since she turned 1.5 year old cause she dropped everything she loved since she was 6 months old.
    Since that ER incident I stopped offering the fried chicken and served her our usual family meals alone. She would never eat anything. So I would giver her biscuits that she only liked recently and milk after every meal time which she never eats. I feel helpless I don't wanna force her as I know that could traumatize her.

      Do you think she's constipated again? If she tends toward this, you will want to discuss a strategy to prevent constipation with your pediatrician. She may need more fiber or other approach to keep things moving through. Fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains are very helpful in keeping children regular too. Listening too this and reading all the comments made me realize I am not alone anymore! 😢 I may be 32 this year but I have always felt like an outsider because of this. I used too eat some specific meat back in the days and then it just stoped. Haven't been eating meat for over 10 years now and somehow it never comes back.
    I can't try new food because i'm afraid of the taste and texture. I can't even visit restaurants because of the control I have on my plate. If I don't have full control on my food plate, how the food is layed down etc. i'm getting aniexty. Some people even think I am crazy that I only eat a certain type of food all the time and never getting tired of it.
    Not sure what I wanted with this comment more than just too say thank you to everybody! 😢
    However, can this maybe be the cause of my stomach pain on and off?

    I have an extreme picky eater..it started around 3months old with his milk (thanks, severe silent reflux and allergies...) and it became a real issue with solid food when he was 11 months. He vomited while sleeping on his back and that's how it started (he was perfectly fine with solids before that). He had to be hospitalized for a few days because of weight loss and he's running behind on his growth chart. Damn, it's hard. One thing that helps : offer food while he's free to move around, no pressure at all. He is willing to put pretty much anything in his mouth but he spits almost everything out. I so hope this gets better with time...

    My husband is 43 and I believe he has ARFID. No veggies or anything healthy really, he just supplements his sugar/carb diet with those sugary multivitamin gummies and believes that'll make up for it. What kind of specialist is best to help him with this? He's starting to have health issues as a result. He already sees a therapist but I doubt they discuss much about that as he doesn't see it as a problem really.

    • @JillCastle
      @JillCastle  Před 3 měsíci

      A think if he's willing, an adult dietitian to help him expand his food variety and overall diet (or at least make sure he's getting proper supplementation and help with other nutrition-related conditions) could be helpful for him.
