How Not to Dungeon Master | RPG Horror Stories 2

Have you ever had a dream that your dungeon master would suddenly start blasting your player characters left and right with reckless abandon? Oh sorry, that would be a complete and total nightmare! Haha silly me, what an innocent statement that is apropos of nothing. Oh man, thank goodness that was only a hypothetical situation, otherwise Drew and Ryan would need to talk about how insane a person would need to be to do that kind of thing for a little while and might need to craft all kinds of eldritch punishments for an offender such as that!

I once ran an incredibly high difficulty campaign, it was modeled after Darkest Dungeon. I made sure the players knew up front and actually had them make two characters at the start of the campaign because it was almost guaranteed that their first would die. The campaign ran about two years as an alternate to when not everyone could make it to the main campaign that was being run by someone else, and I think I killed about 8 characters from six players. The only part I felt bad about was I TPK'd with an ambush of 2nd level orcs on route to the target dungeon rather than being killed in the dungeon, I think I rolled over a dozen 20s for the orcs that combat. I had all the players switch to their other characters and they were sent back to the same dungeon (Lazy DM me didn't have to throw out the map I made for it then) to find out what happened to the first party. I retcon'd that TPK encounter that the orcs just KO'd the party and captured them in the dungeon instead of killing them , when the second party cleared it, they ended up rescuing themselves.

I had to leave early once from a one-shot and the DM allowed me to do a kamikaze move with my aarakocra where I dove into an enemy from the air and we both speared each other and died 🤣 It was my most epic death!

it sounds like this DM could have saved his players' time by just taking their character sheets and putting them through a paper shredder in session 1 instead of making them play a campaign to the same effect
