- This is a definitive cantrip tier list for the tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons and Dragons fifth edition. We are (un)trained professionals who are here to provide the hard hitting facts. Which cantrips should you take? Where do your choices stack up? Buckle up we're about to provide some absolutely irrefutable entirely subjective not provable definitive opinions in this Dungeons and Dragons 5E Cantrip Tier List.
Drew winning confirms that his version is now the definitive version of true strike
I like how the two dms are just good buddies now
1:10 Frostbite is also a Con save, which most monsters have a good bonus to. If you're an ice wizard, take ray of frost!
For real though I completely forgot this spell was in Xanathar's till this video popped up, it really just gives off that "we have Vicious Mockery at home" vibe to it.
The damage is too bad to be used over other cantrips for pure offense, cold is hardly better fire resistance-wise probably being the third most resisted damage type (excluding non-magical weapons) while psychic is mostly resisted by a select group of aberrations.
That being said it can only be used against armed martial-type creatures for the secondary effect (while Vicious Mockery is for any attack roll), and constitution is terrible for a save-or-suck spell, though that being said wisdom is not amazing either in Vicious Mockery's case.
Real disappointing spell for anyone wanting a cold-themed character, sad F tier :P
can't wait for the Definitive Feat tier list. please do that next. also the editing is clearly a labor of love. I enjoy it a lot!
I'm looking forward to background tier list
Keep up the great work you guys have been doing great not only with the dnd episodes but also these tier list keep it up
I agree with Drew's reworking of "Spare the Dying."
I agree with all of his reworkings and I'm gonna demand my next DM accept them as homebrew
Love the chemistry of these two with the editing and aesthetic of the video. Keep it up guys.
epic drew moment indeed
Ah yes I know exactly what a cantrip is
silly spells
Me when someone leaves a metal container on the sidewalk
No seriously I have no idea what they’re talking about 🤣
@horrorladchad3122 they're spells in DnD that don't cost spell slots to cast
To elaborate further on them, since they don't cost spell slots often times they can be pretty weak but some might have their own niche uses
It's a spell that doesn't take a spell slot, but has the same property of spells so silence can stop it, it's like the party trick ur uncle does at birthday party's with his finger
Such a good episode, really nickel and dimed my day
Love you guys so much! You get me through my weeks I swear. 💚
as a Grave Cleric and loves playing the dedicated healer of the party, Spare The Dying kinda cool (with RP on the forefront ofc)
Keep'em coming! I just started playing DnD at my local game shop the last few Tuesdays. I've met a lot of new people and already have a group. Thanks to this show and Skill Check for getting me into this addictingly fun hobby!
For next time please add cantrip / spell descriptions with components range ect. To have a better understanding of the cantrips / spells for newer players :)
Stinky Stinky Drew!!!
Love these mini lessons on DnD. Helping me get my first character assembled 😊
0:50, 30:17 True Strike has very niche uses (like before using something like Plane Shift offensively, since that uses a 7th level spell), but yeah, attacking twice is generally better. True Strike as a Bonus Action is interesting since it's still a concentration spell (which limits its power), but there are cases where that could be OP (Arcane Tricksters would always be able to trigger Sneak Attack, for example). They've redesigned the spell during that latest UA playtest (One D&D), so that's also worth mentioning. Here's the description from the UA 2023 Bastions and Cantrips document (it's very different):
TRUE STRIKE
Divination Cantrip (Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard)
Casting Time: Action
Range: Self
Components: S, M (a weapon with which you have proficiency)
Duration: Instantaneous
Guided by a flash of magical insight, you make one attack with the weapon used in the spell's casting. The attack uses your spellcasting ability for the attack and damage rolls instead of using Strength or Dexterity. If the attack deals damage, it can be Radiant damage or the weapon's normal damage type (your choice).
Cantrip Upgrade. Whether you choose to deal Radiant damage or the weapon's normal damage type, the attack deals extra Radiant damage when you reach levels 5 (1d6), 11 (2d6), and 17 (3d6).
6:12 Yeah, Mind Sliver is bad by itself, but since it's an Intelligence save the target will probably fail, and it's really good for setting save-or-suck spells (because of the 1d4 penalty on the target's next saving throw).
8:56 "You can just ask to change the damage type" Man, you guys are generous DMs 👍 I can think of one class feature that lets you change spell damage type (the Awakened Spellbook from the Order of Scribes wizard), but there are a few hoops to go through ("When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with a type that appears in another spell in your spellbook, which magically alters the spell's formula for this casting only. The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend").
10:53 "I always snap my house key when I leave, or he always breaks the key in the lock" Creative uses like that are exactly why Mending is better than people usually give it credit for. It is situational (so it's not a cantrip I'd take right away), but if the situation comes up you'll be glad you have it (since no other cantrip lets you do the same thing). Also, it's definitely worth mentioning the Mending (to reattach limbs) + Revivify combo (or Gentle Repose + Mending + Revivify if you feel the casting time limit wouldn't work).
13:10 "Spare the Dying now brings them up to 1 HP" One D&D tried that redesign (on the Druid & Paladin UA: "You touch a creature that has the Dying condition. The creature regains 1 Hit Point"), and many people just shot that down (it gives you the same purpose as Healing Word - emergency healing - as a cantrip, and it gets worse when combined with Find Familiar, since they can deliver touch spells at a distance). They eventually made another redesign on the Bastions and Cantrips playtest, which is (this one was better received, and it was interesting to see spell scaling not related to damage):
SPARE THE DYING
Necromancy Cantrip (Cleric, Druid)
Casting Time: Action
Range: 15 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous
Choose a creature within range that has 0 Hit Points yet is alive. The creature becomes Stable.
Cantrip Upgrade. The spell's range doubles when you reach levels 5 (30 feet), 11 (60 feet), and 17 (120 feet).
16:58 Yeah, Prestidigitation is better overall, but the booming voice is the best part of Thaumaturgy (one of my favorite uses of it is impersonating a god - great for persuading people who worship them -, which you can do if you combine it with something like Silent Image).
17:24 "I'm reworking Blade Ward. It's now...a Bonus Action" That was a way less controversial change than that pause suggested it to be 😛 Barbarians can Rage as a Bonus Action to get those resistances, so it seems like a pretty fair change. The Bastions and Cantrips playtest also redesigned it, but in a different way (many people intially thought it's OP, but it's only against a single melee attack):
BLADE WARD
Abjuration Cantrip (Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard)
Casting Time: Reaction, which you take in response to a visible creature targeting you with a melee attack
Range: Self
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous
You trace a sigil of warding, imposing Disadvantage on the creature's attack roll against you.
20:13 "Magnetic ShamWow" Well, now I wanna see a Prestidigitation commercial ("Your verbal component will be 'wow' every time you cast this spell!") ✨
21:32 Booming Blade is extremely strong if you can trigger the secondary damage (which happens when the target moves willingly after getting hit); see RPGBOT's "DnD 5e Melee Cantrips vs. Extra Attack" article/page for the numbers (on average, it's even more powerful than the 4 attacks Fighters eventually get). It's not an easy condition to trigger, but you can build around it (if you have ways to teleport as a Bonus Action, then you can just use your Action for Booming Blade, teleport away, and then the target would be forced to move - taking the secondary damage - if they don't have ranged option).
24:40 "Chill Touch makes up a ghostly skeletal hand" Yeah, that name is all over the place considering it's a ranged spell that deals necrotic damage. Among the alternative names I've seen (there are threads just on this topic), Reach of the Grave is probably my favorite (it solves the range/damage type dissonance issue).
32:56 The Cleric and Revised Species playtest went in the direction of Ryan's suggestion, making both Guidance and Resistance use a Reaction (removing concentration), but requiring you to be at most 10 feet of the target when they fail an ability check (for Guidance) or Saving Throw (for Resistance).
35:24 Shape Water is the closest a druid can get to Prestidigitation (since Druidcraft doesn't even get close), but the annoying thing about it is the water requirement (so either you worry about carrying waterskins or barrels around, or you find a way to get a Decanter of Endless Water). RPGBOT has a whole article just for Shape Water uses ("Shape Water: A Practical Guide").
"I'm fighting a bear, it probably is not a genius, mind sliver!"
plot twist it succeeded the save because i made a bear that in its hibernation hours is actually an incredibly smart scientist and has been researching the best synthetically produced honey recipes
Stinky Stinky drew!!!
Hopefully the perfect video to know what cantrips to give my level 2 necromancer
Booming blade is S tier for multiclassed characters who use melee. And if you're a sorcerer with quicken spell you can basically use it to give yourself extra attack. Also just an easy pick for bladesinger wizards.
Chase cameo was dope af🔥
You guys rock!!!
epic Drew moment
First time I played I thought it was called can't trip, like they can't be missed
FUCK YEAH CANTRIPS!!! PRESTIDIGITATION THE GOAT!!!!!!
Mind sliver is not bad if youre concentrating on other spells. In a normal game with people who aren’t power gaming it’s actually pretty clutch
If people think Truestrike as a bonus action is too OP then just have it also consume your reaction.
39:09 hardest I've laughed at a youtube video in probably years bro
I think this is the earliest I've been for anything 😂
19:41 Spotify when?
Based upload
Epic Drew Moment.
24:52 it should be named Grave touch
I love the praise of eldrich blast just to slap it in B tier lol. I’m sorry my eldrich sniper just hit for 50 with a cantrip 😂
What if spare the dying gave a 1d4 health to the person it got fast on but took a 1d4 health from the caster? Keep your party alive at the cost of some life force?
Clutched with fire bolt GGs in the chat
Could you guys also create episodes about cantrips? And there are so many, probably better to split it in like 5 episodes and talk about a subset of cantrips
Even with the information they are giving now, its just to overwhelming and does not make it really clear to me what the cantrip is.
They made Jessy do backgrounds with out a green screen 😂
C for choose a better cantrip
It’s a MOVIE 🍿
MINOR ILLUSION, THAUMATURGY, PRESTIDIGITATION MINOR ILLUSION, THAUMATURGY, PRESTIDIGITATION MINOR ILLUSION, THAUMATURGY, PRESTIDIGITATION
I see those mtg cards. Brainstorm is a great cantrip. I won’t shit talk lightning bolt but it ain’t a cantrip
