Julie, I am so glad that I found you. I began speaking to corporate groups about three years ago. Speaking engagements came so quickly that I didn't have time to write books or create a solid infrastructure for my business. So, now I am working backwards. Your videos are informative, well done, and presented efficiently so that much can be learned in a short amount of time. I look forward to watching your remaining videos and reading your materials. I expect to complete my first book in a few weeks. BTW, what you said about starting with free speaking engagements is "spot-on!" At the same time, it is important to survey what other speakers in your genre are charging when they speak before similar groups. Then, have the courage to take a deep breath and quote a competitive price. Besides making sure that I had an engaging topic that I was capable of delivering well, that is probably the most important decision that I made when launching my speaking career. - Larry Moody, BBQ Team Building

This is excellent advice Larry! And congrats on getting your book done. If you need any support post writing please reach out - this is our wheelhouse.
The deep breath part is right ... and pausing after you say the number so you don't talk yourself down from that number right away. :)

I've just written a book about my experience with high elevation and harsh climate lavender farming (I'm in Montana (of all places) over the course of 20 years that will basically teach you how to do it better than I did - the first time! I got a second chance after a freak cold snap annihilated 90% of my original crop, a weather event I call the Devastation. In Lavender Farming: Secrets from a Hard Row Hoed I offer comparisons btwn the new state-of-the-art farm and the old failed farm. I've done many craft demonstrations and teaching gigs and am comfortable with an audience and encourage their participation. I'm really looking forward to book tours! Thanks for your encouragement!

That media kit is beautiful o.O :O Ted talks are good examples of course. I think my favorite advice is to videotape every talk. Audio visual feedback is the best way to improve. Wooo I made the bestie list!

@@BookLaunchers Just applied to Book Launchers! Do you track/estimate conversion rates for your different advertising mediums? I'm curious about the cost/value ratio of print mediums like these vs digital tools, like short video or just the digital version of the same media kit. Averaging results across many clients could give new authors an idea of what balance in media they should strive for

  • @poetryfromtheheart1287

Great tips, especially the one about working your way up to a larger audience. I know the knots that would be in my stomach if I had to give a talk to 12 people, never mind making the leap to 400. Also I loved your tip on creative titles for talks. I think it is a great reminder that while it is important to write an interesting and creative book, our creativity need not, and should not end there.
