Hello Ladies, Men, and Non-Binary friends,
Today I'll be sharing my overwhelming love for Disney's very own Prince Naveen. I've been revisiting some of my favorite Disney films lately, and have come upon a startling realization: most Disney Princes are predatory. Yikes.
Thankfully, Naveen doesn't fall into that category and by the end of this video
I'll convince you that Naveen is the best Disney prince.
    Much love
    xx Skullie

I would also like to add that the two balance one another, Tiana did too much work on her dream and Naveen had too much fun without working to anything. They both found the balance within one another

I've always respected that Tiana didn't use Naveen's money to get the restaurant. Sure he backed her up, but she didn't use his prince money to make her dreams come true. She worked hard for it.

I love that they made Naveen a person of color. Despite being from a made up country and being kind of a mash up of many things, the directors and animators made him feel real and brought a lot of light to his character. Since Tiana is the first african American princess, I honestly thought that Naveen was going to be African American or something as well, just for that representation but I love that they made him different. Being from a black community myself, it’s sometimes looked down upon to date outside of your race; especially dating a white person. My family still gives me hell over by son being biracial but that never deterred me. It’s part of who he is and his father’s race never bothered me. I acknowledged it and I respect it. Naveen being a person of color but not necessarily black just shows young children that there’s more outside of just your community. There’s a whole world and billions of different people. Movies like Aladdin and Mulan and Coco brought that forward too and I think it’s beautiful. I do hope that Disney creates even more movies about other cultures and those people interacting. It’ll just show so much unity.

Whoawhoa whoa, Aladdin was not a gold digger. He fell in love with Jasmine when he thought she was a poor peasant like him, and they had a giant heart to heart talk about their insecurities and stuff before the sultan cops showed up. He also had not considered that marrying Jasmine would make him Sultan until her Dad brought it up. Aladdin definitely was being an idiot by lying to her, but he was no gold digger, and had no desire to be Sultan.
Also, The Little Mermaid, at the time the film was made, was meant to be a feminist story about a girl rebelling against her racist father who didn't approve of mixed race marriages, and who was too controlling. Long before she met Eric, she wanted to be human. If anything, you should be giving the story flack for pulling a "SU Rose Quartz" by portraying a girl fetishizing an entire species, and letting that drive her actions.

A word about the "happy because she's happy" and "willing to give up things for her": these things are good in moderation, but two people should have a level of maturity there that helps each maintain an identity. I just got out of a relationship in which the guy idolized me in all the wrong ways; when I was happy, he was happy, but when I was sad, he was distraught. He depended on me, and I felt continually uncomfortable with realizing he'd do anything to please me, even try to change (or simply hide) himself for me.
His mistake was not realizing who I was and how much I didn't want that from him. Genuine growth is good, but there is another kind of "growth" that is built on deception and illusion.
If the person you date is not secure in their identity from the start, the chances of the relationship destabilizing them further are incredibly high.
Sorry to be the person who gets triggered, but I just wanted to put this out there. In moderation, these attributes are healthy; in excess, the power you possess becomes unbearable and demeaning.

No, you're absolutely right! I'm glad you mentioned this! Co-dependence is incredibly toxic and having your entire worth/emotion/health as a human dependent on your partner (or anyone other than yourself) isn't healthy. I'm so sorry for triggering you. I should've been more clear:
Naveen was originally a VERY SELFISH character, only thinking and caring about himself. His growth comes from caring about Tiana in a way that he's never cared about anyone else in his life. He's finally acquired some empathy and is now aware of how his actions affect the emotional state of other people around him (for better or for worse). THAT is what should be praised! Not the mirroring of emotions or idolization. Thank you so much for pointing this out. Much love xx -Skullie :)

It shows the importance of working hard for your dream and not waiting for any prince charming or rich people to carry you away from the hardships of life. It also shows great friendship and relationship, between people of different color at that, just like how Charlotte treated and adored Tiana as her equal and was willing to give up her long time fairytale dream for her friend's true love. As for Naveen,, come on have you seen the way he looks at Tiana like he finally found the light and purpose of his life?? Unlike other princes (no offense), he came to love Tiana for her qualities, personality, and for who she truly is, not because he fell in love with her beauty at first sight.

Also I'd like to add something that separates the old generation from the new age one. When they get turned back to humans and get the restaurant running the restaurant is called TIANA'S place still. When I showed the movie to some of the older women I know they were confused about why the place was still only Tiana's and not Naveen and Tiana's place or better yet a new title that had to do with both of them like 'the swamp'. In their minds now that Naveen was there it should be both of theirs.
To this day I will always credit Disney for making the restaurant Tiana's because so often when men come into women's lives they're expected to share their dreams and make room for men. Naveen is there and enjoys the restaurant but this is still Tiana's dream and should stay true to the original dream as she had it. For that I really like Naveen.

i think what really sold me on these two is the scene on the boat during naveen’s failed confession, when tiana interrupts him to look at the building for her restaurant passing by. rather than pushing onwards, naveen stops, listens to her, and the two of them have a brief chat and joke around cheerfully about the future.
it’s such a tiny little scene, almost completely divorced from the rest of the movie. you could cut it out and the story would remain intact... but it’s so important. it’s the extra mile taken to show how in love these two are, how comfortable they are in each other’s presence. it’s a glimpse into the friendship behind the moon-eyed honeymoon phase, showing that past the romance these two people genuinely, truly get along, an that only reinforces the love.
disney movies almost NEVER do this- give the characters time to relax and talk like people. this one scene absolutely cemented these two as the best disney couple for me. i can’t think of one before or since that captures the same faithful humanity and what love really means: trusting and being comfortable with one another, deep down. it’s easy to forget that people intended to be in a lasting romance should also be friends, but princess and the frog took that extra step to cement it in a movie that would’ve already been good if it wasn’t even there. Iconic.

I've always loved Naveen and Flynn, because not only are they physically attractive, they have depth and they grow as characters and learn from Tiana and Rapunzel. They were both willing to sacrifice for them too. Flynn was literally ready to die for Rapunzel just so she could be free from Gothel and Naveen was willing to sacrifice his lifestyle and help make Tiana's dreams come true. And I've always found that most of the other Disney relationships were so shallow, like Cinderella's prince was literally named Prince Charming, he didn't have any identity outside of that. Which I think is something that deterred me from enjoying those movies as a kid whereas Tangled and Princess and the Frog are probably my favorite Disney princess movies.

    • @MoonMage1026
      @MoonMage1026 Před 3 lety +66

Yes! I was looking for a comment like this! The biggest character development Aladdin goes through is a very important one of being true to one’s self, and “stop pretending to be something I’m not.”
The revelation of him becoming the sultan (which doesn’t happen until Jasmin’s father starts going on about announcing their engagement to the kingdom) scared him so much that it was the reason he goes back on his promise of freedom to Genie.
Aladdin a gold digger? If that were true he would have done what Genie said, wished to be a rich prince, and then just handed the lamp to jasmine to get her 3 wishes and set the Genie free. Instead he honored his promise to free him.
The only thing I’ll give them is that yes, he lies about who he is because he felt the real him wasn’t worthy of her. Which is, again, something his character owns up to by the end of the film.

    • @starrsmith3810
      @starrsmith3810 Před 3 lety +41

@@MoonMage1026 it really confuses him how much flack he gets as if he didn’t own up to his fault at the end and would have returned to his old life if the Sultan hadn’t fixed the law.
Then he gets called a gold digger even though he liked her before even knowing she was the princess. He only found that out because of the guards. There was a story on AO3 where Jasmine runs away from the palace and meets Aladdin as planned but she doesn’t end up caught by the guards, she lives with Aladdin, they adopt a kid, and he never realizes she was the princess until she had to return home because the Sultan got sick.
That’s kinda how I can imagine it going for them if the guards hadn’t intervened.

True but still trying to base a relationship on a lie can cause trust issues and is unhealthy. I think Aladdin did have growth but the way they got their start (when he appears as a prince) isn’t the best since Jasmine already had an issue controlling men and lying as a form of control.

In the animated film, she doesn’t fully warm up to Ali until she realizes that he was the same boy from the market, which I think shows she likes him more than the fact that he is a supposed prince. He even calls her out for her lie at that moment and they both laugh about it. Given all this he fell for her before knowing she was a princess, and she fell for him as a commoner, which I think is the more important takeaway.

I am most intrigued at how much emphasis is put on Naveen's character compared to the other princes, to the point where Naveen's bullet point traits actually came close to matching Eric's in the beginning of the film.
Eric - Sailor smiley handsome man, is pleasant to the other sailors, friendly with his rambunctious drooly dog so you know he's not a snob toward animals, isn't all that interested in his statue so you know that he is not egocentric. Is concerned enough to help Ariel out when he perceives that she needs help (which I mean, she kinda did). Isn't marriage-obsessed enough to instantly hit on Ariel, he instead tries to get to know her and help her out (almost like helping a little sister, imagine if they went for platonic love here). Hearing and seeing a pretty lady with a beautiful voice made him obsess a little, to a point where he was more focused on mystery than a girl right in front of him.
Eric actually had plenty of character if you looked for it. The difference is, as you said, the only effect Eric has on the story has to do with his relationship with Ariel. Eric could be a pompous, stuffy, germ-phobic nutcase, but he would serve the exact same purpose in that story.
Naveen honestly has the same amount of traits as Eric. Pampered to all heck and back, sheltered, egocentric to a point where he doesn't pay any mind to his servants (one of them literally betrays him, that's how annoying he was LOL). Loves music, partying, the company of others. As the movie progresses however, we see that when he's given a genuine chance, he can come through and put in genuine effort.
Naveen is among the best disney princes because the story finally gave him a proper role that involved genuine connection and empathy, without needing to lie or be disingenuous.
This movie tried hard to be good, but they focused on all the right places. The characters, their relationships, their feelings/thoughts/turmoil, blahblahblah. I do believe the movie tried a bit *too hard* in some places (that opening is just DEMANDING you to fall in love with Tiana's father, holy crap, it worked but STILL), but damn am I glad they chose to put the focus where it is.

What about Li Shang from Mulan? He was a sexist when he thought she was a man, but later when she saved China, his perspective changed. Isn't that character development? Also he turned a bunch of random people into soldiers and is a loyal and honest captain and a good person.

The lack of mentions for my man Roger from 101 Dalmatians is disturbing. He's definitely not as developed as other Disney men since he's pretty much a side character for most of the film, but in the first 20-30 minutes he really does shine.
He's talented, polite, considerate, light-hearted, funny, clever and even though he's nervous he stands up to Cruella in order to protect the puppies and his family's happiness. After he meets Anita, he is genuinely sweet and caring towards her, valuing her opinion and input. He does her best to make her laugh and cheer her up. He's very focused on his music, but doesn't sacrifice either his work or his relationship with Anita to focus on the other. While sadly Anita isn't given much of a personality, their relationship is genuinely supportive and happy and just super cute.
Roger isn't a prince by any means, but he's a king in my books.

This reminds me of something I saw in an interview about Kristoff. Even tho he’s not an official Disney prince, in Frozen 2 when he meets up with Anna again he doesn’t say that he’s there to save the day, he literally says “I’m here. What do you need?” He puts her ahead of himself automatically and it’s an endearing quality to find in a Disney movie.

Prince Charming lives up to his name better in Cinderella III: A Twist in Time. Way more charming and fleshed out in that one. Also, maybe an unpopular opinion, but the love-interests in the Barbie movies are way more crush-worthy than most Disney princes.
