Our second day on the road and I got up early to walk around downtown Rapid City, SD on our relaxed travel trip. The "City of Presidents" (series of statues) is in the Black Hills and is a gateway to Mount Rushmore and points south. So many great things to do in the area and it's a really beautiful city. This was my first visit to the actual city. We've driven past many times on Interstate 90 though. I hope you enjoy the downtown and nearby residential neighborhood. Thanks to our patreon Supporters.

    Wikipedia:
Rapid City (Lakota: Mni Lúzahaŋ Otȟúŋwahe; "Swift Water City") is the second most populous city in South Dakota and the county seat of Pennington County. Named after Rapid Creek, where the settlement developed, it is in western South Dakota, on the Black Hills' eastern slope. The population was 74,703 as of the 2020 Census.
Known as the "Gateway to the Black Hills" and the "City of Presidents" because of the life-size bronze president statues downtown, Rapid City is split by a low mountain ridge that divides the city's western and eastern parts. Ellsworth Air Force Base is on the city's outskirts. Camp Rapid, part of the South Dakota Army National Guard, is in the city's western part.
Rapid City is home to such attractions as Art Alley, Dinosaur Park, the City of Presidents walking tour, Chapel in the Hills, Storybook Island, and Main Street Square. The historic "Old West" town of Deadwood is nearby. In the neighboring Black Hills are the tourist attractions of Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, and the museum at the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research, and to the city's east is Badlands National Park.
The discovery of gold in 1874 by the Black Hills Expedition, led by George Armstrong Custer, brought a mass influx of European-American miners and settlers into this region of the Dakota Territory. A group of unsuccessful miners founded Rapid City in 1876, trying to create other chances; they promoted their new city as the "Gateway to the Black Hills"; it was originally known as Hay Camp. The "Gateway" nickname is shared by neighboring Box Elder. In February 1876 John Richard Brennan and Samuel Scott, with a small group of men, laid out Rapid City. It was eventually named for the spring-fed Rapid Creek that flows through it.
The land speculators measured off a square mile and designated the six blocks in the center as a business section. Committees were appointed to recruit prospective merchants and their families to locate in the settlement. Such merchants soon began selling supplies to miners and pioneers. The city's location on the edge of the Plains and Hills and its large river valley made it a natural hub for the railroads that were constructed in the late 1880s from both the south and east. By 1900, Rapid City had survived a boom and bust and was developing as an important regional trade center for the Upper Midwest.....en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_C...

Kind of a fun video, but there is so much more to Rapid City. The beautiful stone bldg, Halley Park, used to be the Sioux Indian Museum. A new museum, The Journey is amazing. The high school is very old, burned down way back, added to, etc. It was called Rapid City High School. 1969 was the last graduating class (my class). There is a huge new Rapid City Central High School next to our beautiful civic center called the Monument. Elvis Presley was the opening act when the civic center opened. The most beautiful homes on West Blvd were further up from where you were walking. Unfortunate you didn't go up to Dinosaur Hill - the view of both sides of Rapid City is amazing! I wished I could have driven you to areas that really would have made this video really awesome, especially to someone interested in moving or visiting here! Rapid is divided from east to west thru the "gap" between the hills where you will find even more beauty like Canyon Lake Park & the drive up Rimrock! Please don't take my comments as negative! Just wished you had more time, more cool info about a lot of the bldgs in town, history, etc. Also, you need to come in the summer when all the trees downtown are so beautiful & the city square where the ice skating was, is a beautiful grassy area plus an area of inground water geysers for the kids to play, also an entertainment stage. So many events happen here throughout the summer. So, hope you come back!! The video was fun to watch, but there's so much more you could have shown, time permitting! Great idea of a walking tour!

Left Rapid in '87 and moved to Japan--been here since. However, it's wonderful to see the city I spent the first 18 years of my life in. I attended General Beatle, North and South Junior High, and Central High School. I remember when President Reagan came to the Civic Center. It's so nice to revisit, thank you for the walking tour.

I grew up in Rapid but haven’t lived there for 40 years. I sure miss it! Thanks for taking me back! Some of those businesses were open way back then and even longer ago, such as Who’s Hobby and Tally’s Restaurant. In the late 1800s my great grandfather owned a shoe shop downtown. When the mall was built in the 70s, downtown seemed dead. I’m glad it has come back to life! The high school you showed is not the current high school. I went to this one and then in 1978 we were the first class to graduate from the new high school. Our rival school was Stevens on the west side of town.

Very well done as always, Henry. Thanks so much.. I haven't been here in a while but I've admired your humility and lack of egoism since I began two-plus years ago. i'm 84, still a retired psychologist and mediator in West Hollyweird and as distractible by dumb, shiny objects as ever. I read obsessively and my amazing 35 year old daughter keeps me humble, happy and feeling fortunate past words. You make Rapid City look and sound like a place I'd want to stay for a time. But then you do that for Montana as well.

Was stationed in the Air Force in the Black Hills in the 70's. Love the area. In the distance is Dinosaur Park on what they call the "hogback" hill that splits east and west Rapid City apart. There are several concrete dinosaurs that is open to the public. The kids love to play on them. Built during the depression it is one of the cities free attractions. You need to visit the Minuteman Missile historic site near Wall, South Dakota. A cold war site. It is where I was stationed as part of Ellsworth AFB.

I was mildly surprised you got an hour out of Rapid City. It's a pleasant little town. When you mentioned Wall Drug, I immediately went to "South of the Border" I pass by that on I-95 all the time. So incredibly tacky. I've never visited Rock City, but I've seen those birdhouses all over the place. Looking forward to more delightful walks. Safe travels to you and the family.

Thanks for the nice walk. 238 people died in the June 9, 1972 Rapid Creek flash flood. (I lived in the area then.) Dinosaur Park is fun for children and adults. If you go someday, there are many steps up. But the 7 dinosaurs and the view are definitely worth it. You can even see the Badlands! Love the Black Hills. Maybe you could return in May or June when it is beautiful.

Love the video, my only suggestion to better the walking videos is to clearly show not only the stores on the side of the sidewalk that you are walking on but to also show all of the stores on the opposite side of the street if you aren't planning on walking on that side to also showcase those store fronts. Lastly ,when you are walking on the sidewalk let us see the stores that you are walking by to the right of the sidewalk that you are on instead of just showing the side walk and street straight on. It would be nice to see the different stores and shops that are in said city that you happen to be walking by!
