Im Jahr 1963 wollten die Amerikaner den M60 und die Deutschen den M48 ersätzen und so kamm es zur Zusammenarbeit und zur Entwicklung des Kampfpanzer-70. Das Project wurde verworfen und daraus wurden der Leopard 2 und der M1 "Abrams" entwickelt ...
I heard the T-80U beat this tank in most of the parameters. I know for sure T-80 REFLEKS range outdoes any tank in the world out there today. But I can't help but respect and like the Leopard anyway.
After Germanys Reunification / the end of the cold war Germany reduced it's more than 2000 Leopard 2 tanks to a number of 350 today. The rest was sold / given away to our Allies so cheap, that nobody could resist. :-) And for performance comparisons: in the best case a piece of equipment does what it is designed to do - and the Leopard 2 was designed to defend the territory of West Germany (e.g. the Fulda Gap) against a Soviet Invasion / WW III with T-72 and the like during the 1980s...
Beautiful MBT, clearly shows the ingenuity and superiority of the German armored vehicle industry. A worthy descendant to the fearsome Tigers and Panthers. The fact that the powerplant can be exchanged in 15 minutes under battle conditions left me with my jaw dropped. Personally, I like the turret design of the M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams better, the flat vertical sides of the turret back seem rather vulnerable to APCR and APFSDS rounds. Still, an amazing vehicle. Not to be trifled with.

And as you said, in the point mobility is the Leopard 2 clear better. Next thing is the upgraded fire power, where the Leopard 2 is today also superior, against the Abrams
Canada has Leopard 2A6M's, they were the first of the NATO forces to deploy them to Afghanistan in the Kandahar Region for combat duty as well as the Danish and the Netherlands deployed them. They are truly a fantastic piece of kit and in my opinion the best tanks in the world. As for this video, I guess they forgot to mention the fact that Canada is also a Leopard user and has been since 1978.

So the Armor from the Leopard 2 A6 M is better ... Next things: Leo2 A6 M has a range limit from 500 km and a topspeed from 72 km/h, 55 km/h offroad. M1A2 has 475 km and 67 km/h, 48 km/h offroad. So the mobility from the Leo2 A6 M is better ... Rheinmetall 120mm L/55 against 120mm M256 L/44 ... Leo2 A6 M has the better gun ...
Like Russian tanks and Russian planes, both were built to form a quick military, the Leopard 2 was built to rule the battlefield, like the F-22 was built to rule the skies and counter any other fighter in the world, the leopard was built to be the best.
Das is ja auch richtig so, erstens sind uns die Gegner, gegen die wir Panzerarmeen ins Feld führen müssen, ausgegangen, und zweitens ist der Leo in seiner aktuellen Konfiguration ein exzellenter Panzer.
Ich frage mich, woher du weißt, welche panzerung besser ist. Soweit ich weiß, wird die exakte Zusammensetzung beider Panzerungen STRENG GEHEIM gehalten. Und von einem "Weichbrötchen" kann man beim Leopard 2, der in Afghanistan sowohl alte Russische Minen als auch EODs weggesteckt hat, wohl nicht reden!

I don't know about the Challenger I think that is about as good as the Leopard over all but has a better gun than the Leopard 2. The Leopard 2 would crush the abrams! thumbs up!
Oh and you forgot to mention Abrams has got a German gun. ;) Same as Leo used to, but the L44. Built in USA, but licenced from Rheinmetall Germany. Now Leo's got the better L55. :)

@DemPaschseiner Öhm, der MTU MB 873 - Ka 501 des Leopard 2 ist ein Vielstoffmotor. Heist, das er, genau wie die Lycoming Textron AGT-1500 Gasturbine, auch mit anderen Brennstoffen betrieben werden kann. Genau gesagt, muss das Verhältnis zumindest 60% Diesel und 40% andere brennbare Flüssigkeiten betragen ... und er läuft trotzdem ;-)

@couteau86 Stimmt. Mir fällt grad noch mehr auf. Beim ersten Panzer sieht man recht deutlich einen Auspuff. Damit kann es schonmal kein T80 sein. Und die Wanne sieht stark nach nem späten T72 Modell aus. Hauptgeschütz ist auch noch in der T72 Montage. T72 + Kontakt5 + externe Tanks vom T90 + T80 AA-MG ist schon ne komische Kombination. Ich hatte eben wegen diesem Schild für den MG Schützen gedacht es wäre nen T80. Hab so was noch nie bei nem T72 oder T90 gesehen.
Falsch! Die Kompositpanzerung des Leo und M1 gleicehn sich zu c.a 89%. Ausserdem kannst du das garnicht wissen welche Panzerung die bessere ist, da beide Panzerungsarten "Streng geheim" eingestuft sind. Auch der Motor des Leopard 2 ist wie die Gastubine des M1 ein Mehrmischmotor( MTU). Der T-90 hat einen entscheidenen Nachteil. er ist ein Automatiklader, das macht ihn Schuß/min klar unterlegen im gegensatz zum Leo und M1. dort bestimmt das können der Crew die Ladegeschwindikeit.
Oh, the T90 is an excellent tank on its own. It might have not that fancy electronics but that means its less vulnerable to EMP. Surely that has some disadvantages but in certain situations less is more. Never underestimate Russians. Everything we learned about tank building in germany the Russians tought us during WW2. Their tech is always laughed about for being lo-tech but it works as intended going toe to toe with even the most modern technology.
@natsplit Stimmt, könnt auf den ersten Blick ein T-80B sein, doch hat der T-80B die "Kontakt-1" Reaktivpanzerung am Turm und Wanne, deren einzelne Platten kleiner sind, als die, die man auf dem Foto zu sehen sind. Daher tipp ich eher auf einen T-72, der auf T-90 Stand aufgerüstet wurde, da diese die "Kontakt-5" Reaktivpanzerung haben, deren einzelne Platten ungefähr die Größe haben, wie die, die man auf dem Foto zu sehen sind.
@acupoflego thats wrong. L is german for "Länge" (length). so it has 55 Kaliberlängen (55 times the length of its caliber). the more powerful L55 has the same caliber to match with all old ammunition and keep simplicity and costs.
I found the words "the gunner has the option to fire himself" rather funny, as I was thinking he'd have to be rather slim to fit into the 120mm bore :-P even though I know they meant fire the cannon using his controls.

The German Leo use a MTU MB 873 12 Cylinder Diesel engine he delivers 1100 KW The M1 use a AGT-1500 Gas turbine Allison DDA X-1100-3B 1119 kW Both types can use the same fuel Each tank has properties of good and bad, no one is perfect The battle is decided by the first shot and a good crew

The Leopard 2 is reaching its limits, though. There's not much room for further modifications, since the new gun, the additional armor and all the new gizmos are quite heavy and the chassis can only carry so much. It's already decreasing the Leopards top speed and manouverability.
@KarILsson Sweden choose between M1A2 Abrams , Leclerc and Leo 2 and think we did the best choice. All are good MBT the only thing i didnt like about the M1A2 is big heat signature from the turbine, high fuel consumption and the big dependence of maintenance compare to the Leo 2. Yeah swedish MBT in the vid you can see it on the camo horizontal hatch and smoke discarder in protected boxes :D
In which way is the Challengers gun better than the Leopards? The only disadvantage of the Leopard 2A6 is that all the upgrade (additional armor, better gun and a thousand other thingys) are weighing more than the chassis was designed to carry.
@FinalPre: The Abrams has the M256 a license bulid of the L/44 Rheinmetall. The Leopard 2A6 has the longer L/55. But the Abrams have higher Firepower than the Leopard 2. And they havent the same Armor Protection. The Abrams has Chobham Armor with Depleted Uranium. The Leopard has 3rd Gen. Composite Armor. The Abrams is better protected against KE. The Leopard better against CE. 2014 are the Leopard 2A7+ , M1A3 Abrams, Challenger 2 ( w. 120mm and Export Engine and the T-95 the new best MBTs.
Ich glaub wir machen auf Deutsch weiter, deine letzte Antwort hab ich nur mit Mühe verstanden. Leo 3 is eingestellt, weil es sich nicht mehr lohnt, Kampfpanzer brauchen wir im Einsatz nur noch vereinzelt zum Show of Force, ansonsten bringen uns Schützenpanzer wie der Puma oder anderweitige Panzerfahrzeuge (Fuchs, Dingo, Eagle) mehr.
It isn't. The Abrahams M1 can only use the outdated smooth barrel gun because the new, larger version is not fitting in its turret. This tank is superior in firepower and thats why its so widely distibuted throughout NATO.
@couteau86 Die haben Arena keinesfalls aufgegeben. Aus dem Georgienkrieg gab es einige Fotos von T90 mit Arena. Aber wegen der Gefahr für Infanterie benutzten sie es in den aktuellen Konflikten in Tschetschenien und Dagestan nicht.
Da die Bundeswehr sich in einer Art "Umbau" befindet um es mal zu vereinfachen, tauchen tagtäglich gerüchte über abrüstung oder abschaffung auf dies ist leider nicht zu vermeiden. Fakt ist das der Gepard als Flapanzer in den Ruhestand versetzt wird, aber dies wird wohl noch einige Jahre dauern bevor wir zu anderen moderneren Flugabwehrwaffen greifen. Im Augeblick sind die beiden "Projekte" SkyShild und Patriot dabei ordentlich in die Bundeswehr eigengliedert zu werden.

It's the abbreviation for "Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung" which means something like "corporation with limited financial liability". This type of corporation limits liability to the corporations assets, so if a GmbH goes bankrupt, the former owner's assets can't be taken by creditors.
Hi, I don't promote death and destruction and what it can do but I look at the Leopard from it's engineering point of view. How man with their effort and will power made their first ever tank and in less than 100 years made this. =)
In my opinion todays MBT have to have modular reactive armor and hard/soft kill missile defense or it is obsolete. The Leo is a nice piece of machinery but it will suffer when opposing skilled infantry with modern ATGM.
@creshal Er hat nicht gesagt der EF2000 ist billiger, er hat gesagt Preis/Leistung ist besser. Ein Verlust eines EF2000 ist nicht so schlimm wie ein Verlust einer F22
@couteau86 Ja ist privat. Auf den Fotos waren jedoch teilweise Ortsschilder/Schilder zu Georgischen Städten zu sehen. Zwischen nem T72 und T90 Wrack zu unterscheiden ist natürlich nicht besonders einfach, aber es war deutlich die autonome Waffenstation zu sehen. Kann daher eigentlich nur ein T90 gewesen sein.
Oh the new 2a7?? Hands down hell yea it looks bad ass. I was surprised they were able to add that extra armor without hindering its ability. I also heard it got an upgraded engine. Check out this one though...the new Turkish Altay and I'm sure you've heard of the upgraded T-90MC by now :) Pretty sick designs and all came about the same time. The SEP I trained on in the army design wise wasn't too impressive to me but did a damn good job...still noisy as hell LOL

Stimmt. Mir fällt grad noch mehr auf.
Beim ersten Panzer sieht man recht deutlich einen Auspuff. Damit kann es schonmal kein T80 sein. Und die Wanne sieht stark nach nem späten T72
Modell aus. Hauptgeschütz ist auch noch in der T72 Montage.
T72 + Kontakt5 + externe Tanks vom T90 + T80 AA-MG ist schon ne komische Kombination.
Ich hatte eben wegen diesem Schild für den MG Schützen gedacht es wäre nen T80. Hab so was noch nie bei nem T72 oder T90 gesehen.
Falsch! Die Kompositpanzerung des Leo und M1 gleicehn sich zu c.a 89%.
Ausserdem kannst du das garnicht wissen welche Panzerung die bessere ist, da beide Panzerungsarten "Streng geheim" eingestuft sind.
Auch der Motor des Leopard 2 ist wie die Gastubine des M1 ein Mehrmischmotor( MTU). Der T-90 hat einen entscheidenen Nachteil. er ist ein Automatiklader, das macht ihn Schuß/min klar unterlegen im gegensatz zum Leo und M1. dort bestimmt das können der Crew die Ladegeschwindikeit.
Oh, the T90 is an excellent tank on its own. It might have not that fancy electronics but that means its less vulnerable to EMP. Surely that has some disadvantages but in certain situations less is more. Never underestimate Russians. Everything we learned about tank building in germany the Russians tought us during WW2. Their tech is always laughed about for being lo-tech but it works as intended going toe to toe with even the most modern technology.

Stimmt, könnt auf den ersten Blick ein T-80B sein, doch hat der T-80B die "Kontakt-1" Reaktivpanzerung am Turm und Wanne, deren einzelne Platten kleiner sind, als die, die man auf dem Foto zu sehen sind. Daher tipp ich eher auf einen T-72, der auf T-90 Stand aufgerüstet wurde, da diese die "Kontakt-5" Reaktivpanzerung haben, deren einzelne Platten ungefähr die Größe haben, wie die, die man auf dem Foto zu sehen sind.

L is german for "Länge" (length). so it has 55 Kaliberlängen (55 times the length of its caliber). the more powerful L55 has the same caliber to match with all old ammunition and keep simplicity and costs.
I found the words "the gunner has the option to fire himself" rather funny, as I was thinking he'd have to be rather slim to fit into the 120mm bore :-P even though I know they meant fire the cannon using his controls.
@TankNutJohn89 This is not right, the Leopard 2 A6 M and the M1 Abrams have the same L55 120mm Canonne. Same firepower and same Reloading time.
Not much different are the engines. The German Leo use a MTU MB 873 12 Cylinder Diesel engine he delivers 1100 KW
The M1 use a AGT-1500 Gas turbine Allison DDA X-1100-3B
1119 kW Both types can use the same fuel
Each tank has properties of good and bad, no one is perfect
The battle is decided by the first shot and a good crew

1. Der Abrams hat nur die Rheinmetall 120mm L/44 Kanone. Feldtests mit der Rh L/55 haben gezeigt, das der Drehkranz des M1 nicht in der Lage ist, die Kräfte der Rh L/55 zu kompesieren ...
2. Ja, was PS und Geschwindigkeit angeht, sind Leo2 und M1 ziemlich gleich, allerdings hat die AGT-1500 ca. 210% Verbrauch, im Verhältnis zum MB-873, was den M1 ziemlich einschränkt, was die Reichweite angeht ...

The Leopard 2 is reaching its limits, though. There's not much room for further modifications, since the new gun, the additional armor and all the new gizmos are quite heavy and the chassis can only carry so much. It's already decreasing the Leopards top speed and manouverability.
@KarILsson Sweden choose between M1A2 Abrams , Leclerc and Leo 2 and think we did the best choice. All are good MBT the only thing i didnt like about the M1A2 is big heat signature from the turbine, high fuel consumption and the big dependence of maintenance compare to the Leo 2. Yeah swedish MBT in the vid you can see it on the camo horizontal hatch and smoke discarder in protected boxes :D

In which way is the Challengers gun better than the Leopards? The only disadvantage of the Leopard 2A6 is that all the upgrade (additional armor, better gun and a thousand other thingys) are weighing more than the chassis was designed to carry.
sry but the abrams just got the l44 gun like the leopard a4 and a5 but not the l55 like the leopard a6
After seeing this it comes as no surprise Saudi Arabia wants to buy 200 Leopard tanks, preferring it over the U.S. M1A1.
@FinalPre: The Abrams has the M256 a license bulid of the L/44 Rheinmetall.
The Leopard 2A6 has the longer L/55. But the Abrams have higher Firepower than the Leopard 2. And they havent the same Armor Protection. The Abrams has Chobham Armor with Depleted Uranium. The Leopard has 3rd Gen. Composite Armor. The Abrams is better protected against KE. The Leopard better against CE. 2014 are the Leopard 2A7+ , M1A3 Abrams, Challenger 2 ( w. 120mm and Export Engine and the T-95 the new best MBTs.

Ich glaub wir machen auf Deutsch weiter, deine letzte Antwort hab ich nur mit Mühe verstanden. Leo 3 is eingestellt, weil es sich nicht mehr lohnt, Kampfpanzer brauchen wir im Einsatz nur noch vereinzelt zum Show of Force, ansonsten bringen uns Schützenpanzer wie der Puma oder anderweitige Panzerfahrzeuge (Fuchs, Dingo, Eagle) mehr.
It isn't. The Abrahams M1 can only use the outdated smooth barrel gun because the new, larger version is not fitting in its turret. This tank is superior in firepower and thats why its so widely distibuted throughout NATO.
Sheesh :) The M1 had the 105mm. The M1A1 and everything after had the 120mm :) It's not that hard, is it?

Die haben Arena keinesfalls aufgegeben.
Aus dem Georgienkrieg gab es einige Fotos von T90 mit Arena.
Aber wegen der Gefahr für Infanterie benutzten sie es in den aktuellen Konflikten in Tschetschenien und Dagestan nicht.
Da die Bundeswehr sich in einer Art "Umbau" befindet um es mal zu vereinfachen, tauchen tagtäglich gerüchte über abrüstung oder abschaffung auf dies ist leider nicht zu vermeiden. Fakt ist das der Gepard als Flapanzer in den Ruhestand versetzt wird, aber dies wird wohl noch einige Jahre dauern bevor wir zu anderen moderneren Flugabwehrwaffen greifen. Im Augeblick sind die beiden "Projekte" SkyShild und Patriot dabei ordentlich in die Bundeswehr eigengliedert zu werden.

@temporaldisplacement lol GmbH is just the equivalent of ltd. (limited). It's the abbreviation for "Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung" which means something like "corporation with limited financial liability". This type of corporation limits liability to the corporations assets, so if a GmbH goes bankrupt, the former owner's assets can't be taken by creditors.
Hi, I don't promote death and destruction and what it can do but I look at the Leopard from it's engineering point of view. How man with their effort and will power made their first ever tank and in less than 100 years made this. =)

They won't until the cold war is completely forgotten. That is still a long way off.
In my opinion todays MBT have to have modular reactive armor and hard/soft kill missile defense or it is obsolete. The Leo is a nice piece of machinery but it will suffer when opposing skilled infantry with modern ATGM.

@creshal Er hat nicht gesagt der EF2000 ist billiger, er hat gesagt Preis/Leistung ist besser. Ein Verlust eines EF2000 ist nicht so schlimm wie ein Verlust einer F22

Ja ist privat.
Auf den Fotos waren jedoch teilweise Ortsschilder/Schilder zu Georgischen Städten zu sehen.
Zwischen nem T72 und T90 Wrack zu unterscheiden ist natürlich nicht besonders einfach, aber es war deutlich die autonome Waffenstation zu sehen.
Kann daher eigentlich nur ein T90 gewesen sein.
Oh the new 2a7?? Hands down hell yea it looks bad ass. I was surprised they were able to add that extra armor without hindering its ability. I also heard it got an upgraded engine. Check out this one though...the new Turkish Altay and I'm sure you've heard of the upgraded T-90MC by now :) Pretty sick designs and all came about the same time. The SEP I trained on in the army design wise wasn't too impressive to me but did a damn good job...still noisy as hell LOL
