This song makes me happy and sad at the same time. Kind of like growing up: you’re excited to see what’s in store for the future, but sad because you can’t re-live your childhood anymore. Or kinda like moving away to a new place. Yeah it’s cool because of all the new memories you’re going to make, but you’d have to say goodbye to where you grew up. It’s bittersweet.
It hurts even more when you realize how much sense the song makes in the context of the movie. "...'cause I can't come back home till they're singing 'La, la la la, la la la'..." Anna's primary reason for going to the countryside is because of her asthma, so that she can breathe cleaner air, and thus de-stress. However, her depression and self-hatred have been a factor that have added to that stress, and don't go away just by going someplace else. Her thoughts are self-destructive, and it ends up affecting her behavior toward everyone else (Yoriko, the Oiwas, Nobuko). She won't be able to go home until she finds peace of mind, when she's finally able to calm down her thoughts. "Yeah, you want it, but I can't help it I just feel complete when you're by my side" These lines perfectly represent Anna and Marnie's relationship. Anna has felt alone her entire life, and Marnie has been isolated in the marsh house with the maids for a good chunk of her childhood. Upon meeting each other, they finally have someone to talk to. They can be honest with each other. To be honest, maybe it represents Marnie even more. She was abused by the maids so much that it screwed up her mind. She becomes hysterical upon reaching the silo, and hallucinates that Anna is the boy she likes. It carries on into her adulthood, after losing that boy and having to send her child to boarding school so she can go to a sanatorium. Being around Anna are rare moments where she can heal, and have her own peace of mind. Anna wants to be with Marnie, but Marnie can't help it; she needs Anna because she's unable to cope without her. Goddamn. This song/image combo really adds a whole other layer of meaning that (ahem)... means a lot to me.
It’s okay man, everything gets better sooner or later. Sometimes it’s hard to accept they may not be the one, but you’ll find that person for you one day. Try to live life knowing you’ll be this happy again one day, and if you think she’s the one, go for her. Do what you have to to show her she means the world to you. Don’t let this roadblock mean the path is over. I believe in you, man
