  • Episode 239 - This week I decided to do something a bit different, I want to show you the realities and the truth about metal detecting. I saw this idea on another CZcams channel called Vintage Paragon UK, hosted by a very nice guy called Ed. I contacted Ed to ask if I could use his idea, he was more than happy for me to do so. So here it is, the shocking reality of metal detecting.
Please show Ed some love and take a look at his channel here:

** I have since realised there are a couple of 'black screens' towards the end of this video. Apologies about this, a silly error in the editing process which I did not spot **

Great video Gareth, the realities of detecting, cant be gold all the time 😂 Thanks for the shout out, that is very kind of you and glad you tried the clicker idea, that must have taken ages to film this episode! Deffo up for sorting out a meet up when the days get longer, keep it up mate 👍

Hi mate, and thank you for letting me use your fantastic idea :) Yes, the amount of effort that went into filming every target and editing it was a nightmare haha. Unfortunately during export, some random black screens got introduced near the end which I didn't notice until after I uploaded :( I'll be posting the clicker of doom off to Marcus very soon. Thanks for tuning in. G

Spot on! I’ve been trying to explain this to people for years! I’ve dumped all of my trash on camera in a couple of my videos just to show those just getting into the hobby that it’s normal to dig a lot of garbage and not to get frustrated and give up. I love your channel!

    • @TheDukesOfDerbyshire
      @TheDukesOfDerbyshire  Pƙed rokem +1

Hi mate, thanks for the comments and for watching another of my videos, it is very much appreciated. I get a lot of people commenting about how little trash I find and how much amazing things I find, so I made this video for them. I would never normally show the trash, as I want to keep viewers engaged in my content and my channel. Again, thanks for your kind words and I hope to see you on the next episode. Gareth

@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire you did well! I got lucky when I just started out, and didn’t find much trash at my very first permission in Berkshire. It was mainly old coins, buttons, and musket balls. Then when I moved back to the States, it was mainly trash. I almost quit the hobby! That was 14 years ago, and I’m glad I didn’t stop. Although I probably dig 10 pieces of garbage for every keeper, it’s worth the effort. My point is, I hate seeing those beginners out there become frustrated and give up so easily. I also hate seeing them get into the hobby thinking it’s going to be all gold and silver
and it’s going to make them rich. I often joke that us detectorists are nothing more than glorified garbage men đŸ€Ł

Yes Gareth, a good demonstration of the reality of the hobby. From my experience of club digs in Staffordshire to date over 17 years:
    1) If you lack patience, then it's not the hobby for you.
    2) Land can be permanently ruined by green waste.
    3) Some fields can be exceptionally busy, as you've demonstrated, and bits of aluminium give very good signals. Ultimately, few "goodies".
    4) Some land can be exceptionally quiet, and as such, make for a boring detecting experience. And yet the land is free of junk and what few signals are to be had are often good finds.
    5) The thousands of us that have detected legally in this country since the hobby began in the late sixties ...have recycled tons of lead, copper, brass & bronze. Plus, scrap precious metals. We've cleansed the land and disposed of all the unwanted metals. Also removed large chunks of iron that can damage modern farm machinery. Iron can be a pain, sometimes discriminated out but at other times giving "dig me" signals.
    6) Every dig is a fresh start, like fishing, we live in hope but don't expect it to be win, win, win.
    7) If you persevere with the hobby long enough then you will eventually be rewarded.

Victorian pencil sharpener is your mystery object if you’ve not already been told 😊 nice find. Yeah good video again mate. It wouldn’t be as good a hobby if every hold was a banger

Yes I agree, you have to work really hard to make special finds, and when they come along, its the most exciting feeling int he world. Not so well made, there are some random black screens towards the end that aren't supposed to be there. My editing Software malfunctioned when I was exporting. Didn't even know they were there. I've been detecting 'the big green hillside' I call it for almost 2 years. 3 weeks ago I had my best ever day on it finding hammered silver, Victorian silver and a stunning silver thimble. Probably my 30th time detecting. Its a lottery every time you go metal detecting. Thanks for watching. G

I live in the states in New England. I would be completely ecstatic if I found a 200-year-old coin like you did in this video. I have a mind Lab equinox 900. I was amazed how deep you were digging with that detector. It seems the deepest I can find, Coins is around 6 inches to 7 inches. Oldest thing I’ve found is about 100 years old. (Silver dime.) I scan about 20 hours a week for the past four years. I feel like I’m doing something wrong. I do get cool stuff time to time but nothing like a 200-year-old coin. Very nice video. I like your content. Happy digging

Hi there, thanks very much for taking time out your day to watch this video. 200 year old coins are very very common here. The UK has a long and rich history. America is a relatively new country in comparison. The Nox 900 is a great machine, I am sure you are not doing anything wrong, perhaps need to spend some more time with it playing with programs and settings? To be honest I only ever use preset programs on my machine. I wish you luck in your future hunts, and I hope to see you on my channel again on some of my 300 other metal detecting videos. I am at 8 years experience now, I know my machine and I know my land, I usually have a good idea what I am digging with every signal. As the years go by, it all comes together and when you start to become successful at the hobby, that's when the real obsession kicks in :) Thanks so much for watching another of my videos. Gareth

Well, there is the true facts uncovered to people who don't realise the effort we put in. There are days that the luck of the rubbish gods favour over finding everything interesting. I suffer a disability where I overheat real fast, so regulating that while digging is a problem for me, but it does not stop me going hunting. The great outdoors and the chance of me unearthing an important relic or coin just keeps me coming back for more. All the best bud and HH.

But yes the reality is 99% is trash. I've learn I should avoid places that are used by people everyday near roads or towns, you get a lot of contacts but you find nothing but trash, on remote locations is kind of a disappointing to start, it can get you an hour or two to get a contact, but usually you find things more interesting like old tools and artifacts. Hi there Steve, thanks so much for coming along, watching this video and leaving me a comment. I find it staggering you have been metal detecting since 1976 and never found gold?!?!?! How often do you detect? Some of us are out every weekend through out the months and years. I've been metal detecting for 8 years, but that equates to about 8,000 hours in the field and managed to find 9 gold coins, a gold fob seal and a gold pendant. So I'm doing OK, 1 a year on average. I hope that you find a bit of gold soon, it will be a very special day for you that's for sure. Have a look at this video of mine, I found 2 amazing gold finds on the same field, 7 days apart:

If you haven't found anything out about it, it could be an old plumb bob used for building straight walls vertically. I do believe that Romans used them to great effect in their time. Another train of thought is they were weights for nets used to catch rabbits although the poachers I knew used pegs (like tent pegs) to secure the nets over rabbit holes and then send in the ferrets.
