  • In this video I'll do an unboxing of the board game 'Paperback Adventures' by Fowers Games, including the characters Damsel, Ex Machina, and Plothook.
    In Paperback Adventures, you get to play as the protagonist in one of Paige's wild brainstorming sessions. Conquer a menagerie of pulp novel characters in this solo deckbuilding word game.
    Just like in the original game Paperback--and its follow up, Hardback--you will build your own deck of cards throughout the game, and those cards will have letters to help you spell words every turn. But in Paperback Adventures, instead of testing your wordsmithing wit against other players, you will use your words to defeat a series of AI enemies in "roguelike" fashion.
    Paperback Adventures is a solo-focused game. It was designed from the ground up as a strategic, highly-replayable solo word game. There are also additional gameplay variants for cooperative play between two players. There are 3 playable characters that have different strengths and playstyles.

      It's really good - I need to find more time to play it more often! 👀

    At 11:00 : yeah, the markers fit VERY tight... I actually don't think I will ever use them again. On my first playthrough, I was seriously worried that I would (at minimum...) permanently bend or damage the trays. I'll probably just use some cubes for markers.

      Yeah, I'm not fond of them either, to be honest, although the game is really good. 😐

    Thanks for the demo and unboxing of these cool solo games...but you hurt me because I don't know from where to get them in Greece?

    • @SirThecos
      @SirThecos  Před rokem +2

      Yeah, this is always very tough. That is one of the reasons I back some of them on Kickstarter, although that is very expensive. I don't back as many games myself anymore because of that. Here in Germany, it's not easy to get all games I'd like to play, either. 😬

    can't wait to see it arrive.

      It's a pretty fun game I must say - I hope you'll enjoy it as well. 😁

      @@SirThecos on paper it ticks all boxes for me, progressing deck, word games. But the font is horrible as are the plastic inserts. I'm a bit worried based on your video.
      Oh well. It's a first edition, I broke my own rule to never back first editions any more.

      @@kosterix123 Actually, I really enjoy the game so far (only based on one play, though) and I don't mind the font and the insert. One thing I actually do not like are the markers since they are too wide and fit very tight. Apart from that, I'm quite happy with the game so far. But I need more plays for sure to confidently be able to say that.

      Will post an unboxing when I receive the product. I'm guessing you live in germany and if so we are neighbors so it won't take more than a week...

    You seem to back a lot of KS games: how do you decide what will/won’t be worth backing? Do you always end up liking them?

    • @kosterix123
      @kosterix123 Před rokem +1

      I think you know the answers to those questions....

    • @SirThecos
      @SirThecos  Před rokem +2

      Hm, this is a good question but not easy to answer. 🤔
      There are specific things I look for in a game - most importantly, it needs to be something I could enjoy and something I don't have yet. I enjoy fresh mechanisms and nice themes most of all but a good production is preferable as well. Also, it'd be great if I could play the games with other, except if they're solo games, of course.
      Paperback Adventures had a few very compelling reasons to back it: I love word games as well as deck builders. And being able to play all of that solo sounded perfect. There's nothing in my collection that even comes close to that, so this was a no brainer, for me personally. 😀
      Does that make sense? Also, I don't back as much on Kickstarter anymore as I used to.

    • @SirThecos
      @SirThecos  Před rokem +1

      @@kosterix123 Actually, I don't think the answer to the question is that simple. 🤔

    • @kosterix123
      @kosterix123 Před rokem

      @@SirThecos that makes total sense, and your reasons completely align with mine. Big red doubt is that Tim has zero xp in making an RPG. I expect some balancing, but I also wouldn't be surprised if some balancing issues were found.

    • @kosterix123
      @kosterix123 Před rokem +2

      @@SirThecos maybe not but the most sensible approach is what you do in any investing. Real estate, car, stock, boardgames, I don't see the difference.
      you do your homework, research playthroughs, pedigree, and compare with what already is in your collection. Compare with your rule of thumbs, identify red flags. All that is not a guarantee though. I do that as well and still end up selling over half my purchases.
      But I agree practicing this is not that simple 🙂
