  • In this video I show you how you can modify the BIOS on a Dell OptiPlex 9020, 7020 or 3020 so that it natively supports booting from an NVMe SSD. This provides an incredible boost in performance and completely transforms the machine. Check out the blog post for further ALL of the details:
    www.tachytelic...
The procedure is slightly different depending on the model of the machine, but it is easy for all three kinds of machines.
If you found this solution useful, I'd appreciate a donation to the channel:

I just wanted to say thank you for this detailed tutorial! No issues with creating the new bios, but I was hoping for a little more tweaking on the bios end to get it to work (UEFI). I spent a lot of time switching things around and then giving up. I had cloned the new drive like you did originally but drive wasn't showing up as boot drive in bios. Ended up just installing a new windows to my m.2 via recovery and then spending even more time messing around with configurations until I FINALLY got it working! Dont ask me what I did, but I'm just grateful it works lol. Thank you again for all your help with the new bios!

I still can’t get it to boot. Dell optiplex 9020 mini tower. UEFI is Enabled just says it no hard drive found.
All sata cables are removed and turned off in bios. I seen other people say they did it to the 9020 mt. But when reading about it on the Dell support page 9020 mt. It says it’s not possible.
The bios has UEFI option. All it says is to enable it for it to work in bios.
If there was an exact list of settings in the bios would be nice. You turn one thing off and something else doesn’t work. It’s crazy. I am embarrassed right now because I have built computers and fixed them for over 20 years. And I still can’t get m.2 nvme to boot into windows from the pci slot with the 9020 Mt. Works just fine on a Precision 3630 3650 ex… but I still can’t get the m.2 nvme to boot in the pci slot on the optiplex 9020 mt.
Even says it’s possible and supports m.2 nvme on the manual for the 9020 mt.
A full detailed m.2 nvme pci slot boot into windows 10 pro CZcams video for the 9020 mini tower would be nice to see.

Edit: I was able to get the Dell 3020 Mini-Tower to boot from the NVME SSD m.2 drive by changing settings in the BIOS and doing a fresh install of Windows 10 from a USB flash drive. The computer still won't boot when I clone a disk image using Macrium Reflect from my current SATA SSD to the NVME drive. The BIOS settings I needed to change to boot from the NVME drive and install a fresh copy of Windows 10 were to disable legacy boot options (x2), disable all SATA ports, and select UEFI boot mode only.
I can't seem to boot from the NVME drive? I was able to follow all of the steps - which thank you so much for posting! - and now I have it set so my system recognizes the NVME drive, confirmed by the bios which shows up exactly as the picture shows in the blog post, interfacing perfectly, and I even used Acronis Clone Disk software to clone my boot drive information from my SATA SSD to the new NVME drive and everything seems to have copied over with no issues (file sizes match perfectly, which I can view in windows explorer with no issues), but my Dell Optiplex 3020 MT won't boot from the NVME drive. I did try disabling the SATA ports on my 3020 too, but that doesn't seem to have forced it over. Is there an additional setting I am missing?

Congratulations. Hopefully your experience can help me.
I am trying to upgrade my Optiplex 3020 with a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 256gb SSD and a UGREEN Gen 4 X16 PCIe expansion card.
I have read the instructions several times and not had a problem until the “modify Bios” step. The Bios has been upgraded to the current A20 version for the Optiplex 3020
The instructions indicate that the NVMe driver should be inserted after the last DXE driver 6C58FC74-64DA………C97316. This driver is not listed in my bios. The instructions strongly suggest following them exactly for this step. I am reluctant to just add the NVMe driver after the last DXE driver.
      Suggestions please.

I came across this video by accident, looking for something about the new 970 EVO Plus. The instructions seem pretty straight forward, but I am new to this world and would like to know why someone would want to set the new SSD up like this versus it's normal install. I saw speed had a lot to do with it, but is there more than that for a reason? Also is the Dell OptiPlex 3020 that different from an Dell Inspirion 3020 as I have the later. I'm just not sure if I want to take this on, but I like a good challenge. I just am not sure it is worth it. The PC will be used in a doctors office to store patient data in an MS SQL database. It's not a busy office either.

Does this happen to work with a PCIe SSD such as the Intel 750p? Trying to construct a NAS and I have populated all the ports on my 7020. The BIOS recognises the drive as a storage drive but NOT a bootable drive. Thanks in advance if you see this and reply

@@PaulieM I don't know how to tell if it has a ufei bios? Most people are claiming you need a bios update but I don't see a bios update for the 760.
      Update....
Everything was looking good. I found the service mode jumper under the hard drive next to the jumper to reset the nvram but it had no label on it. When I set the jumper it said in service mode and I upgraded the BIOS from A02 to A16. But then when I went to back up the BIOS it said, "platform ich10 error 201, fptw64.exe cannot be run on the current platform please contact your vendor". I'm running Windows 10 pro. 6 gigs of RAM with Core 2 dual. then I tried the win32 directory but that didn't work either. and I tried fptw32.exe also not recognized as an internal command.
I found someone who had the same problem so I downloaded another program to backup the BIOS but it's saved it as a bio16. ROM file. Someone said to reading the dot Rom to dot bin but I couldn't open it with ueif tool because it said it wasn't a UEIF file.

Ok, I disconnected the old SSD drive and turned that drive off in the BIOS. I do want to reconnect it later as a possible storage device location. I then turned on Secure Boot and turned off the legacy boot settings. Suspecting the disc that hard the old OS copied onto it was a little SUS, I did a clean installation with myNVMe plugged into the blue port, just like you said annnnd IT WOOOOOOORRRRRRKKKKKKKSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! While I am able to use the drive in Windows, I have had no luck booting off of my Samsung 980 ssd.
If i go into bios, it has an option for PATA SS, which I assume is the drive, but if I boot off of it, I'm told "selected boot device failed"
If anyone has any ideas on what I could do, I would be grateful.
