    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    This week we're getting down on some quick modern updates for a classic muscle car. Our friend brought over his 1968 Mustang that needed some love to make it more enjoyable on the street, so we decided to hook him up with an EPA steering system and a Holley Sniper EFI conversion. With a 351 Windsor under the hood, this pony car was making a decent amount of power but trying to maneuver it with the manual steering took a lot of the fun out of whipping it around town. So we got to work modifying his Mustang to work with the new EPAS system. With the electric power assist steering system attached to the column, we can switch lanes and make turns without feeling like we're getting a full upper body workout. The EPAS was so quiet and effective that we're definitely considering swapping this system in for the noisy hydraulic system that's in our Tesla swapped square body. With the car more enjoyable to drive, it only made sense to make it more reliable as well. So we yanked out the old dinosaur of a carburetor to add an EFI system under the hood. We were able to use most of his dash-6 performance fuel lines he already had routed through the car to link in all the main components from the Holley master kit. The Sniper definitely woke the car up a bit, giving it a much easier cold start and a more responsive throttle!

    • @giantpune
      @giantpune Před 2 lety +1

      Maybe saves enough horsepower you could measure it on a dyno, but not enough that you could feel it while driving.
      It also saves weight and all those hydraulic PS lines that are all over the place on the 70 and earlier mustangs.
      Tradeoff is it can be easier to diagnose and repair the old hydraulic setup. Its obvious when something is leaking. And you can buy complete pumps and slave cylinders, rebuilt units, or rebuild kits to do it yourself. With the electric steering, you get none of that. When it isn't working, you get to stare at a pile of electronics with your multimeter to try and tell what's broken. And if something needs fixed, good luck finding spare parts for it at autozone or anywhere else.

    • @SalvagetoSavage
      @SalvagetoSavage  Před 2 lety

      @giantpune Před 2 lety +1

      When they work, they're great. When they crap out, you're basically shit-outta-luck. Holley doesn't support you repairing it. You have to take the unit off your car, mail it in, and wait 6+ weeks for them to fix it. Last time I had to call holley, hold time was over 90 minutes.
      At least with the fitech, which is very similar to the holley, its easier to revert back to your carb if you have to take the EFI off for repairs.

    2 things that shoulda just spend the time to do right. that return line dumping at the top of the tank is going to aerate the fuel.. if you didn't want to drop the tank and weld in the bung or bulkhead it properly you should have at least ran a hose inside that fill next to dump the fuel in the bottom of the tank. 2nd, that o2 bung should have been welded. the clamp on bungs are kinda garbage. for a car as nice as this and you having it on a lift already and a tig welder in shop, why not weld in the bung?

      That isn't a common issue, however, the system has an internal circuit breaker. If it trips for any reason, the car would simply revert back to manual steering until you stop, turn the key off and restart the car. The system automatically resets itself.
