A couple of things from the first movie that you didn't quite pick up on. The Bene Gesserit plan has been going for thousands of years not hundreds. The second is that where Jessica went rogue on them was that she was told by the order to have a daughter so the child could eventually be "mated" by them to another bloodline, she instead had a son because she loved Leto and knew that is what he wanted. She compounded this by teaching him Bene Gesserit skills which the order realizes that he actually has some talent for but they are late to this realization and have basically lost control of him.

Indeed Obelisk21. The plan was to mate the daughter of Leto and Jessica to the nephew of Vladimir Harkonnen. Not to Raban, but to Feyd Rautha. Their Son should be potentially become the Kwisatz Haderach. The Kwisatz Haderach has to be a man, since only a male could have the ability to bridge space and time with his prescient abilities.

"Being in control is actually the problem" - I won't spoil the whole thing, but this line actually goes to the core of the problematic and themes of the original books. This is really the core of the story. It's a cautionary tale. "Be careful what you wish/will into reality."

@@NarendraTheComic Herbert's books show a huge experiment re human civilization - can humanity survive itself? The books set up this ideal set of conditions for governance - an omniscient leader who can see all the possibilities into the future, w absolute power and an enormous fanatical following - and the doubt he expresses is regarding if it's possible to save humanity - every choice has long term consequences that spiral out of control - Paul is just the beginning, and the whole experiment is played out by Book 4, God Emperor, and Herbert reflects on the results
      - of course, the real story is about our world today - Herbert is asking if it's possible for us to save ourselves from a path of self-destruction - the Harkonnens and the Emperor and this Galactic Order represent what we are doing to our world now, the ultimate excesses of our vast wealth and power, and our trajectory

What? It's not a cautionary tale lmao. It's Frank Herbert's treatise about the cycle of civilization. The core of the story is about the inevitability of the civilization-changing forces, not about Paul's wish fulfillment.

@@beanwithbaconmegarocket "not about Paul's wish fulfillment"
You misunderstand what @BenoistPoire said. The _internal_ conflict for Paul, the protagonist, comes from him realising that how he wields his immense power will define the course of all of humanity. It's not a cautionary tale told in the usual manner (which is, protagonist blindly fucks up, audience learns lesson), but a cautionary tale told from the inside (that is, protagonist already knows lesson, but struggles to see a way to not fuck up).
Which is one of the many reasons _Dune_ is such an incredible story, tbh. So many facets to the story are innovative in a way that few others have been. (That's also why it winds me up so much when people criticise it for being "just another white saviour story", because what Herbert was doing was in many ways to _undermine_ the white-saviour narrative, to expose its potential for abuse as a tool for exploitation.)

Great reaction! The last ilne in the trailer is a direct quote from the book. Many of the others are half-quotes or paraphrases, "summaries" of the book, if you will. The biggest irony of the book is that it is not a "white savior" story, as I've sadly seen in many reviews/reactions. It is about the tragic effects of fanaticism/messianism/religious engineering. Paul is actually a tragic hero. He doesn't "believe the hype", but sees no choice (and is too afraid of a radical and gruesome solution - which you will find out about in books 3 and 4). Apart from Lady Jessica and Paul's daughter (later in the series, book 3), all in the Atreides line are. Paul's sister, Alia (which should appear here as a VERY strange little girl, born with all the powers of a BG, and also has a pivotal scene at the end in the first book - i really hope she hasn't been taken out and Denis is keeping the suprise), and most of all, Paul's son, Leto II in Book 4 - God-Emperor of Dune - the most intricate, wildest and my favorite of Herbert's series, Now, THAT book is "unfilmable" :)). Which ends the Atreides story line. You are in for the biggest treat as you get into the books. Tried not to give strong spoilers. Anyway, keep it up, it's refreshing to see passionate, perceptive and coherent peeps on the interwebs :)

Totally disagree about the "tragic" effects of fanaticism. Herbert did not place that value-judgement on the stroy--that's your own modern value system. He is writing about the cycle of civilization, the evolution of human society from primitivism to stability to weakness and then its inevitable reversion back to primitivism. It's the "anti-Star Trek" in which society proceeds on an unending course to unlimited liberalism and enlightenment.

07:00 - The Bene Gesserit breeding program to produce the K.H. is thousands of years long. The B.G. Sisterhood centuries ago started their Missionaria Protectiva to inflitrate the local cultures on various planets and sow superstition about a coming messiah who will be born of a B.G. The prophecy the Fremen have of their coming 'Mahdi' or messiah, and the 'Lisan al gaib' or voice from the outer world, both were planted by the B.G. to prepare the way for his worship.
At the same time though, Paul is not under the control of the B.G. as planned (assuming he is the K.H.) so at this point things aren't going according to their plan. What does this mean? Is he following the prophecy or not? And if the Fremen believe he is their Mahdi and he leads them to victory, then is he truly their messiah? Even if it wasn't in the way the B.G. planned? You've kind of got it, lady, but not quite. Couple things without being spoilery. The Bene Gesserit were manipulating blood lines for millenia to produce the "Kwisatz Haderach", the ultimate prescient being. They needed an Atreidies daughter wed to a Harkonnen heir to combine the bloodlines and through various political machinations be in a position to control the offspring of that union. Jessica's decision to bear a son to Leto resulted in a generation skip and Paul was born, free of any Bene Gesserit influence (except that of his Mother, whose family tree is a spoiler so I won't mention).
The prophecy is simply a political tool to guarantee the safety of any stranded or wandering Bene Gesserit, but the Fremen kind of took it to heart and when Paul shows up they read the signs into his actions. As for his prescient ability you have to understand that he doesn't see the future, he sees possible futures, but there is one thread of the future he cannot escape. This is expanded upon fairly heavily in the later half of the novel so I won't say much more on that.
His acceptance into the Fremen requires him to choose a name which people will call him in public (the tribe give him a secret name for use within their troop). He chooses to be named Muad'dib after the little desert mouse that teaches the Fremen a lesson about how to survive in the harshest of climates.
And that's about it for the backstory. Hope you guys enjoy the movie. I know I will.

It is more complicated with Paul. It is not that he fears to lead Fremen into wrong direction based on laid out prophecy. He fears that no matter what he does to help them it ends up in a holy galactic war in his name that kills billions. It is hard to live with such weight and still keep fighting. It is hard to show that in the movies, wonder how they will allude to that in the second one. I really hope they do somehow and not just end it with an impression "good messiah came and saved the day". Really need to read the first book (ok, maybe also the second to solidify, but i don't like the rest of series that much) to understand this problem.

@@NarendraTheComic At a certain point, he pretty much knows that it's unavoidable.
      MAYBE SPOILERS:
Early on into his exile, he sees that he can prevent it by leaving Arrakis and going into hiding from the galaxy at large, or by killing himself and his family, but he didn't want to do that because it would mean letting the people who betrayed his family get away with it all, and he hopes he can find a better path. Once he's assumed the mantle of the prophecy and become known to the Fremen and achieved a few feats, he comes to realise that the galactic jihad is basically inevitable. By that point, he's just trying to do damage control while still achieving his objectives.
