  • “A debut book from award-winning designer Nina Farmer, known for her sophisticated eye and interiors that are elegant, comfortable, and timeless.
Designer Nina Farmer has made a name for herself with her classically beautiful interiors. From reimagining century-old homes to more modern dwellings, Farmer has a way of creating looks that celebrate the past and simultaneously live squarely-and stylishly-in the present. In these pages, Farmer introduces readers to the design solutions she has found for creating that special combination: a carefully curated mix of the classic and the contemporary that looks like it was collected over time rather than created all at once.
The book features nine projects, including a stone-walled 1930s colonial in Westport, Connecticut, a mid-century-inspired beach bungalow on Martha’s Vineyard, and Farmer’s own 1850s Federal-style brownstone in Boston’s Beacon Hill. The book is rounded out with a series of informative essays on the key elements of Farmer’s look, including creating a sense of place, the importance of travel, and collecting art.
Ultimately the book illustrates how thoughtful, considered design can give new life to any home, and, in doing so, inspires readers to do the same.”

Built in 1770, the Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens is the only structure in Wilmington from the colonial era open to the public. Operated as a museum house, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to view a fine example of Georgian architecture and experience what life was like during pre-revolutionary Wilmington. All rooms are furnished with 18th and 19th century antiques and showcase hundreds of objects. Occupying an acre, the colonial style gardens consist of seven distinct areas, including an orchard with pomegranate and fig trees, a kitchen garden and a rose garden.
Constructed on the ballast stone walls of the former city jail, circa 1744, the house retains many vestiges of its previous incarnation, such as outdoor and sub-basement jail cells and a freestanding kitchen house with a massive hearth replete with period cooking utensils.

Is there anything more beautiful than old moss covered brick? The meandering paths, the water fountain, the gorgeous limbed up trees and bark . Breathtaking

Mary, your soft calm voice is exactly what I needed this morning. Thank you for giving your viewers delightful escapes and interesting book reports. I am more traditional in my home design and leaning towards more color and spontaneity. Nina Farmer design is gorgeous and yet has a comfortable feel to it. She must love green, as I do, that bar with the striking green tile is stunningly beautiful. Enjoy your weekend.

That is funny. As a child, I disliked giving book reports very much, but that is exactly what I do on CZcams. Go figure. I'm so glad you enjoy it. Thanks for letting me know.

I look forward to late Friday evenings here in the UK when your weekly offering drops into my notifications. Your general musings are as entertaining as your book reviews. Enjoyed the garden tour, loved the brick sets in the form of flowers. What a beautiful tranquil space after such a macabre start, made more poignant as you have just celebrated Independance Day. Thank you Mary for another delightful video.

Thank you for sharing Nina Farmer. "Timeless" is a good word for the title, as I feel like I could walk into any of my old friends' brownstones on Beacon Hill and feel still AT HOME and familiar while being delighted at Farmer's vibrant rejuvenations. Many thanks also for sharing the Burgwin-Wright House, In Wilmington NC. It was eye opening to learn that it was built over the first city jail there, in 1770, where the locals could see how "justice" was being carried out. Actually, seemed timely right now.

Though my flippity floppity garden (particularly floppity this year) is incoherently colorful, I greatly admire a structured garden where greenery prevails, punctuated with flowering shrubs. This one is lovely, and succeeded in purging this parcel of land of its dark history. Nina Farmer obviously believes in comfortable seating, and I really appreciate her eclecticism, it allows her to juggle many periods and styles in one room, keeping things lively and timeless. Thank-you!

I need to revisit this garden in early spring. It has a bit more color then, but the green is also beautiful. I feel as if my garden is a bit flippity floppity as well. We have had some extreme heat lately, and it is a bit stressed.

Another wonderful book and review. Thank you Mary. The garden was beautiful. The pavers that were used are so different and perfect for circular areas and paths. The brick wall was really amazing how they created the open woven look ,it must have been difficult to do, of course the moss on them is perfect! Glad the days of it being a jail are past and a peaceful garden replaced it. It’s beautiful and the world needs beauty.

Nice garden, well maintained and beautiful. Mary, Mary (but not quiet contrary) how does your garden grow? Can't wait for a tour of your own. A world-renowned garden, Grey Gardens that can be seen by current owners in the Hamptons and you can find on Homeworthy CZcams. Breathtaking doesn't even describe this landscape. Thank you for your book review talents. Til next week Mary ~

Nina Farmer has an interesting design style. I think the 30s-40s era is her niche. Clean art nouveau pieces. Interesting how she re-interprets that era into various architecture. The garden tour was delightful. I have been working on mine in the sweltering summer heat and humidity. You ask "why" Bren? I suppose it will make me appreciate it more!
