- Luka Modric without a doubt is one of the best midfielders of our generation and even amongst all the greatest to have ever played the game. But at nearly 37 years old, Modric is doing something we’ve never really seen before from other all time greats like him. He is no doubt a special kind of talent, and I personally would place him among the top 5 greatest midfielders of all time - and some of you might not agree, but regardless, a vast majority of people would have Modric at the very least, within the top 10 of all time. He’s in elite company alongside names like Zinedine Zidane, Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo, Cruyff, and many more. But let’s look at the main aspects that really sets Luka Modric apart from all those household names and show why he is truly different and is in a class of his own.

Modric is the most complete midfielder of all time, the only midfielder who's 10/10 in attack 10/10 in defense 10/10 in dictation of the game who has thrived in every single system in the world and has all the arguments to even be called the best ever. Modric is easily a top 3 midfielders of all time. He has everything.

Modric story is the most inspiring out of any footballer he went from spending his childhood in a war torn country to playing at spurs and than getting his dream move to Real Madrid only to be voted flop of the year and after all of that he became a 5 time ucl winner, took his nation to their first ever wc final, and probably the biggest achievement of his career is winning a ballon d’or in the Messi/Ronaldo era.
Honestly, Victor Moses has a more inspirational story. His parents were killed in a religious clash when he was only 11. His relatives scrounged up the money to send him to London, and he was an orphan in London till he got a foster family and made it in the prem. Yes, modric has had more success in football, but Victor Moses has overcome one of the hardest things to go through and still lived his dream.

Players like Casillas, xavi, and Iniesta, Messi played at the “top level/top club” from a very young age so they are much more worn out. On the other hand other players worked their way to the top level so they aren’t as strained as other players and because of that they have better longevity. Like modric in this example

I used to tell my friends, like in 2015 - 16, showing Modric, that he plays every game in a way as if his family is held by throat and told to play as a do or die match.. he never craved for goals, awards or headlines all he is after is a great win.. Yes football players point is to play for the team and make sure the team wins the game, when that is most important thing and coach likes it, when flexing goals, but lose next game and then be knocked-out of Champions League is not so good thing. So rather create easy chance for easy goals, than be selfish, that I want to try from here and that causes us lose the game, when we could have gpt easy goal by passing the ball, so thats why coach hopes the players want to win the game, instead flex off what they can do with the ball.
Modric is a central midfielder, he does everything a defender and an attacking midfielder does. On the defensive side of the game specifically none of the other players mentioned comes close.

The difference between Modric and Xavi, Iniesta is that both are great at dribbling and passing, but only Modric is an excellent box to box midfielder. He always comes back to defend for his team, and this is unrelated but even on fifa he had the Engine trait

Something people should understand is that Modric plays for the team. He never goes for a dribble or a pass that is not needed, he makes a choice of the best option to take and without any hesitation takes action. Look at his workrate and chances on the ball, he can well catch attention with that unbelievable ball retention and skills but he's all about results before gameplay..
Few may understand but he is unarguably the best midfielder alongside Zidane, different breeds within these two
I can see Modric as an all time great and all because I’ve watched him play. But what makes Zidane so special? You seem like a guy that can explain.
Statistics can’t put his play into words at all (G/A), and when i hear he carried France I can’t see how. He made contributions in dying moments, yes. Great dribbles and getting past two players at once. All I can find about him are highlights of plays that result in average (but certainly creative!) passes which lead to no goal. Very creative, but with seemingly no product. As a CAM he barely defended too. His positioning is nowhere close to Modric’s level, who can defend immediately after a turnover and create a dangerous chance in two touches when passed to. Zidane just seems like he forces the ball forward by receiving passes with insane ball control and skills to beat his markers.

Even as a professional it was pretty hard foe him. Back in the 03/04 season he played on loan at Zrinjski Mostar in Bosnia and Hercegovina. Most people recognized his technical abilities, but Luka was always very slim and seemed fragile. That's why many thought he wouldn't withstand in a more professional league. Still he didn't listen to those people and he became one of the greatest footballers. I can really recommend reading his autobiography, truly an inspring story

I think what really helped Modric was moving to the premier league at a young age. It gave him the physical attributes to go along his obvious technical brilliance. He then combined both to reign supreme in Spain even if the Madridsta didn’t appreciate him at first.
The word legend is overused at times but there is no one in the universe that can dispute this man is a legend. We are lucky to have watched this man play the beautiful game!

I remeber watching Totenhamm games 10 years ago with Modric in the midfield. He was amazing there. And now he is the number 10 of the greatest club in the world and won 5 UCL, Best World Cup player and 2018 Fifa best player. He is one of the best 10 football players for sure.
I doubt any other football player will mean as much as Modric does to me and majority of Croats. I was just a kid when he played for Dinamo. Watching his career grow to one of greatest was privilege. His work ethic and vision are beyond those of mere mortals. I might be bit biased, but I hope we can put all doubt aside after we win world cup.

The most amazing part is Modric professional, humble and down to earth.
He even worked hard to learn Spanish as soon as possible so he could communicate with the squad which mostly spoke Spanish along with staff and fans, whilst Bale barely tried to learn “buenos días”. In all his time at Madrid.
Speaks volumes of the type of person Modric is, if you see him somewhere as a fan he’ll talk to you in spanish, Bale will pretend he doesn’t understand and find a way to just leave. I know because I’ve experienced both when they used to leave the Valdebebas training grounds and we used to ask for autographs.

Something people underrate is the fact that Modric is a legit two-way player. He defends, unlike Xavi and Iniesta who relied on team pressure to gain the ball back. Modric is able to manmark players and I think it’s a big reason why Real Madrid wins the UCL so much. They can defend with 11 players for 30-50’ without a problem. They know how to suffer and they’re humble enough to do so. Lord of big teams let their ego take over when the game becomes unbalanced and try to just play their game. That’s why barca keeps on blowing leads. Sometimes you have to adapt to the flow of the game

@@markelon8303 Modric isn't close to Xavi or Iniesta but he is definitely good enough to be considered one of the best midfielders of all time. They're ahead of him in terms of vision, skill dribbling passing, 1st touch etc. But modric has other qualities that they don't such as defending and strength. But Modric in his own right is an amazing midfielder, a specialist. He's like busquets, xavi and iniesta all in 1. Not better than them but more a jack of all trades whereas the former are specialists in particular skillsets.

I will only stick to players I watched playing. Zidane, Pirlo, Modrić, Scholes, Xavi and Iniesta. It is really hard to put one above the others, but Modrić is the most complete midfielder of them all. He is equally good in both attack and defense with positioning and closing players down. In his early years in Real Madrid he was kinda underrated, but slowly progressed to world class status and GOAT candidate for midfield. A legend for sure.

Modric didn't start playing at world class lvl until his late 20s... Iniesta was class off the go and still played until his mid 30s. His age makes it look very misleading

There are players who are good in football, there are players who are great in football and then there are those players in football who are born every few decades... and that's Luka Modrić.
I'd argue that he's the best Croatian player of all time and the best real Madrid midfielder of all time. if it wasn't for benzema unreal season, I'd probably argue that modric is in the run for a second ballon d'or because he also had an unreal season.

@@AJ-lh4fp yes exactly. while I believe zidane is better player with huge impact on games that very few people in history had, his time in Madrid wasn't as successful and he wasn't as consistent. if this was a choice between 2 players, I'd pick zidane but since its about overall impact and consistency it's not even close. it's no coincidence that Madrid started dominating after he arrived and with a great partners in kroos and casiemro they formed probably the best midfield in history. very few can say they won 5 UCLs.

It's not just that he himself is such an incredible player, it's that he is inspiring others especially at real Madrid. Showing players like camavinga, tchouameni, ceballos, ... how to play for the badge at te front of the shirt, the passion, the energy, the quality, they will learn from him and become great midfielders themselves.
All time he is my number 1 midfielder i would build around. No one is like him. Just a warrior that plays whatever is needed.

What the other GOAT midfielders have over him is that although he trumps them from 33+, they trump him from 18-26.
I will definitely put him in top three of all time. He is genius, not a lazy midfielder he fights for every ball. He can teach how to get the ball out of your zone with the other team is pressing. Luka Modric one of, if not footballs G.O.A.T MIDFIELDER in 10mins 40secs . Personally i'd place Zidane ahead of any midfielder any day but as you said MODRiC is built differently. I must add that your supporting points are all well rooted and undeniably spot on. True CRISTIANO should have won it ahead of him in 2018, still what a player. Without doubt the most complete midfielder to have played the game.
Modric has become my all time favorite player over the years, I absolutely love watching him play to this day!

Luka deserved it because of his season and that fact that he did it all. Ronaldo is fantastic but he could not drag Portugal to a 2nd place finish, and Luka most certainly did. You only need to watch how hopeless we are when he’s not playing to know the truth.

I was wholeheartedly supporting Croatia at this year’s World Cup, just to see my man Modric holding that Cup, alas it was not to be, however I’m not mad, the team played consistently well and made it to the semi-finals and that in its own is an achievement so I’m happy for him

What makes Modric different from the others is that he comes from a small insignificant country like Croatia, if he was from spain, england etc he would have been the GOAT no doubt, but when you dont have the royal blood you have to be 5times better to be recognised as the best, like Đoković in Tennis and similar…. I would have him in any dream team I put together. Amazing player with 2 world cup medals for Croatia (a much smaller footballing nation than France, Brazil or Spain), best player at a world cup, Balon D'Or and 5 UEFA Champion leagues. For me he may just be the best midfielder in history.

Definitely on par with Zidane....he has won everything besides a world cup. Regarding Croatia 🇭🇷 as a nation of 4million plus? , this feat of being a world cup finalist is truly amazing and Modric deserves the credit for this. On a team level, no one can match his success.
hmmm ok but that small Croatia is the 8th exporter of football players in the world. So it is small country, but giant in football. Probably same goes for coaches, but not such a list so impossible to check it.
Or another interesting fact, so called total football, high pressing, offside traps, automation in position changes etc. were first seen by Ajax, (Netherlands) and Hajduk (ex-Yugoslavia, now Croatia) in 70's.
So Croatia produces football for decades, not only footballers.

For me, Modric is the essence of what it means to be a midfielder. Like one of the top comments said, He always plays for the team, not for himself. Thats what football is, teamwork and skill. Same with Zidane. Modric carried a country that isn't even top 5 to a world cup final. He is a legend of the game.
