    What is cauliflower ear?
Cauliflower ear is a type of hematoma that occurs in the cartilage of the ear. The medical name for cauliflower ear is a perichondrial hematoma.
Cauliflower ear occurs when impact with the ear causes the perichondrium (the tough tissue covering the cartilage) to separate from the cartilage, creating a void that blood rushes into.
The blood does not drain and causes necrosis of the cartilage, leading to a new layer being produced. This is what leads to the deformed shape of cauliflower ear.
Cauliflower ear is common in close contact sports like rugby and combat sports like boxing.
You can also get cauliflower ear from physical fights, accidents, and even cartilage piercings that get infected.
    Prevention
Cauliflower ear won't go away on its own and has to be treated by a professional. Prevention is the best approach.
Wear a properly fitted, well-made head guard when you play sports or fight to absorb the impact of blows.
If your ears start to hurt during activity, or you're aware you took a hard blow to the ear, stop playing and apply an ice pack for 15 minutes at a time. Rest your ear for a couple of days to try and avoid developing a haematoma.
    Treatment
Apply an ice pack to the area as soon as you think you're developing a haematoma. Arrange to see your doctor as soon as you can. They may recommend draining your ear, or surgery to remove some of the dead cartilage.
