100% top of my list, camping. Buy a cheap tent, get a lift on a fishing boat when the bats are coming out and go find your own private island for the night. It's simply amazing!

We climbed Le Morne. Soon after reaching the top, the weather turned and it started raining. We had to wait about an hour before setting off back down. It was quite slippery and a bit scary. Be careful and wear the right footwear. We saw people on the way up wearing flip-flops and saris. Crazy.

    Hi Lucy!
Your content is so much better than the average Mauritius videos ...
My favorite walk is the one from Le Petrin, through Black River Gorges National Park and ending up where the Grande Riviere Noire meets the sea. I also love Le Pouce and Lion Mountain climbs, both of which you can walk up and down by different trails and have the option to skip the final climb if you're not up for it.
Other highlights for me are the nature reserves Ebony Forest Reserve & Domaine De L'Etoile, the animal parks La Casela & La Vanille, the old botanical garden Pamplemousses and the peaceful area around Baie du Cap.
Though I like Port Louis, the market in Quatre Bornes feels much more authentic to me. Some of the museums are quite boring in my opinion, but I really like the (maritime i think) museum near Mahebourg and L'Aventure de Sucre.

Spent a lot of time exploring the market at Port Louis when I lived there. It's big, chaotic, madness, and best explored with a rope around your waist to be sure of finding your way back. It is the polar opposite of a convenience store but you will likely find most of what you need there. You will leave exhausted but will have to go back. It's that type of place.

A visit to Champs de Mars on a bustling raceday is well worthwhile. And to get an idea of the history of the island and its people, I'd recommend the Blue Penny Museum in Port Louis and L'Aventure de Sucre (a former sugar factory now superbly converted into an interactive visitor attraction).

So far ive only been staying in hotels, which will change in a couple of years when ill rent a house for a few months. Being disabled & partly wheelchair bound i need the full picture before moving there. Been there twice. Once before being disabled on a honeymoon & once on holiday after becoming disabled, but my impression is that its a disable friendly country & i expect to do quite ok on my own, even though im not moving there alone (im not THAT brave/dumb). there are buses that run through some parts of the country, but these are not as frequent as we like it to be, and they shut down by around 6-7pm. I am here now and what I found was that most hotel packages include tours with a taxi to pick you up and drop you back and this can cost you a bit. I am at Intercontinental now and the average trip is around MU 1700-2300 rupees to Grand Baie from my hotel (driver waiting for you included for several hours), more to other parts of Mauritius. (the cheaper option if you opt for this before 6pm and the other after 6pm). There is no Uber or similar. The hotel etc do offer tour packages to see some of these places.
I am considering a trip to Le Morne (dolphin swim) or Île aux Cerfs (island, waterfalls etc). Still checking out which would be a better option.

@@LucyLeheilleix I'd second the food stalls on Quatre-Bornes market, especially if it's a nice day. You can cross the road and eat the food while it's still warm while sitting in the gardens outside the town hall. Some great dholl puri and roti at Moka Village Market too.
Probably the most famous dholl puri seller is Dewa (at Rose Hill market and Bagatelle food court). Lucy, do you know if Dewa reopened at Rose Hill after the disruption from the building of the Metro railway?
As for food hygiene/safety, I've never been unwell from eating Mauritian street food!

I've also never had hygiene issues with food here. I'm going to have to check out Dewa in Rose Hill. That sounds very intriguing!

@@LucyLeheilleix I myself have never had any food poisoning when eating from food stalls, though some places do have questionable hygiene - handling money with the same hands they're holding dholl puris or rotis with, evidently dirty rags to clean tables, etc.
If ever you're in the North there's a dholl puri seller, by the name of Eshan, in Goodlands that you should check out. He operates from an old motorcycle parked beside an electricity pole across the road from the main Galaxy electronics shop.
There's usually two sellers there between 10am and 3pm but he's the one with an umbrella over his motorcycle. A lot of people consider his dholl puris the best in the region.

Probably cant climb a mountain in a wheelchair, but just see le morne will be enough. Which amusement or animal park would you recommend. Preferably one with fruit bats.
