    I have to remind myself after watching these videos, that the good people over there are fighting every day to keep warn out trucks rolling down the road.
    We are quick to judge how they choose to sit on the ground to work. But asking them to stand up and use a table would be like asking us to rebuild a differential on the top of a ladder.
    Cultural habits going back 1000’s of years won’t just go away.
    I applaud these guys for their hard work and skills.
    We in the west will never understand their struggles.

      The last line of your comment prompted me to post a reply. I am from the 3rd world and my father used to have a benchless shop too. Here's an edited copy-paste of my reply to a guy in another video regarding workbenches or proper tools for that matter.
      It all boils down to economics. A workbench in the middle of the small workshop they have will restrict their movements. On the other hand, given that they have enough money for them to afford to get a bigger workshop, it still wouldn't be wise to do so since that would jack up the price of their labor leaving their customers unable to afford their services.
      I caught a glimpse of their workshop in the background in this video and it's almost full of anything relevant to their work. Probably just big enough to house their compressor, welding machine, and whatnot when they close up at night. A space that would probably only be enough for a trash bin in the west. But for them, it's an all-purpose space.
      Did you notice the kid? My bet is he's a "freelance helper". He hangs around the area and any shop that may have just received a piece to work on can call him and he gets paid after the job is done.
      Then he hangs around some more to wait for another shop to call him, be it a tire repair or radiator repair shop, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a jack of all trades and the different bosses he works for were "helpers" in their youth and are now shop owners.
      I also mentioned in the other video that one of the reasons why there are mountains of repairable stuff in the west rotting away in the landfill is because it's cheaper for them to buy new ones than to have them repaired.

      Yes, there are people in the west who salvage stuff from the dump to restore but that is mainly as a hobby and to get satisfaction from restoring things, while these people would see the same heap of junk as food on the table.
      What I'm saying is it's not a cultural thing, it's economics.

    Judging by the amount of sealant on the housing when they took it off that's not the first time the diff has been repaired. Looks like the backlash was never set which has caused the second failure but the lack of pinion seal and poorly installed bearings means it will be back again shortly. At least they get repeat business.

    Its obvious, why they are working on the ground. They don't have impact wrenches and require a lot of leverage and force to remove those bolts. That differential looks very heavy and unwieldly. Very easy to maneuver on the ground. You would need to winch that diff onto the table. A very heavy and strong table would be required to carry that, even then it would need to be strapped down to keep the diff from rolling off. It would just slow the repair down. I agree they should cover the ground better, less chance of getting dirt into the diff. This is like shade tree mechanic work, due to to lack of money.

  • @georgeEPC
    @georgeEPC Před 2 lety

    What a joke how these people work. Anyone with basic mechanic skills can put it back together. It will fail again as nothing was properly done. You should just throw some dirt in the housing as well.
