Bravo to the ATC controller taking charge and fully focus on the gravity of the situation and was level headed enough to keep giving him vectors and details on his current positions even after loosing radar signal.
Instead of passing him off to the tower for the landing as is standard procedure, he initiated the call to the tower at Westchester to get the clearance for landing of this troubled plane.
It goes to teach on how not to over burden a pilot or pass him off to the next controller in the heat of the rapidly deteriorating situation and instead take full charge to do as much as he possibly can the way he did, as passing him off to the approach controller or the tower would only serve as a pitfall for partial or full misunderstanding of the perils of the situation, and by the time the other ATC controller understands the situation it would be too late from that point onwards.
Great professional and efficient job as a controller, I think he really deserves an honor of some sort for his best efforts in his job role.

Controller did a great job getting the pilot where he needed to be and staying calm and clear. If I hadn't seen the title, I would've thought the pilot had it. R.I.P.

Tough situation. IMC with a failing engine. But when the ATC asks you if you want to land and check it out, yes, you do. And when the ATC asks if you are declaring an emergency, say yes. Because ATC already thinks you should, and they are probably right.

This is one of those videos, you can't give a thumbs up for liking it (because the pilot died), but you can't give it a thumbs down because it wasn't a bad video. Its just sad the pilot didn't make it! RIP pilot

I was troubled when I heard the pilot ask for vectors because he "couldn't see a thing out here". When you're IFR, as this flight plan was, he shouldn't be expecting to see anything necessarily, especially on this night. If he was on his left base and familiar with the ILS to 16 at this field, as he said he was, this controller - who did an amiable job - could have simply given him a heading to intercept the localizer and track it inbound (I would have asked him to report established on the localizer under these circumstances). That would have helped the pilot get back on his instruments and stop looking outside for lights at 800 feet as HPN was reporting bases at 300. I assume the avionics were still up and on battery even if the engine quit. The controller never actually issued the approach clearance, just the landing clearance. I got the impression the pilot's attentions may have been divided between troubleshooting and flying.

The president of a company which owned a plane that crashed near the Connecticut border in January, killing two people, has ties to at least 12 additional crashes resulting in five deaths since 1991, records show.
Aviation experts who spoke with CT Insider were divided on whether the pattern is unusual and concerning.
In January, a Beechcraft Bonanza A36 crashed in North Castle, near the Westchester County Airport, while flying from New York to Ohio, killing both men onboard. The plane was registered to a company owned by Laurence E. Rohl, 79, of Willoughby, Ohio; it was operated by T&G Flying Club, an aviation club and flight school Rohl founded.
In the days following the crash, CT Insider reported planes owned or operated by Rohl and his companies had been involved in at least four other crashes. One of those four crashes killed four Case Western Reserve University students. Another sent Rohl and two others to the hospital.
Now, CT Insider has uncovered records detailing eight more crashes - one of which was fatal - involving planes owned or operated by Rohl and his companies. That brings the total number of crashes with ties to Rohl, including the one in January, to 13. He and officials at his companies did not comment.

He was right about dead cylinder. NTSB said cylinder 6 came apart putting a hole in the crankcase. So that is probably going to be the moment the oil pressure dropped off and that unfortunately is a ending for any engine. Sometimes the piston and rod wont shoot out and you can have limited power that could have bought him some time its unfortunate.

In that kind of weather, with no engine power, I would’ve elected to make a water landing on the Hudson right near a river bank where the water is very shallow. Trying to make a power off landing in IMC is too difficult, but using your GPS to fly Vg right along the edge of a large river is much more feasible and safe.

I can hear his engine in the background missing A cylinder. That's more than rough. Trouble was once he took his IFR clearance he was stuck with it. Once you're solid in clouds all you can do is what he did get back as quick as you can.

Good riddance? That's a very callous thing to say. I'm a controller and I didn't hear that at all. The guy seemed to remain fairly calm. I believe he may have gotten disoriented when his attentions turned to the outside, and to troubleshooting as opposed to flying the airplane. I've seen high time airline pilots suffer the same fate for the same reason.
