They ask for fuel and people onboard so the fire department on the airport or rescuers know either how big the fire/explosion is going to be if it crashes and how many dead people they are going to be looking for. ATC is just doing their job. The fact people in here are upset that they wanted to make sure they got the information needed correct is ridiculous.

Also speed assignments! Potential fire and confirmed smoke and fumes ranks as the most critical of emergencies for a flight crew and its passengers. Assigning speeds when that plane needs to get on the ground asap is crazy. Right, and then after asking multiple times about the fuel on board, the information got passed along incorrectly. Big different between 30800 lbs of fuel and 3800 lbs. I do wonder if they ask about infants with smoke/fire because they are more susceptible to lung damage?

Maybe an Airbus 321 pilot would chime in with the procedures the crew would have been going through during this event? @mikaeleriksen2994 Před 2 dny

Heavier and larger aircraft cause much more wake turbulence. The "heavy" and the much less common "super" just denote wake turbulence classes. Per regs you're supposed to use it first time you check in on a frequency. Some pilots always say it, some pilots completely forget. Heavy means aircraft with maximum take off weight of 300000 pounds or more. It doesn't matter how many passengers or cargo there is. An empty plane that's certified to >300k lbs is always heavy. Super means Airbus A380 or the now destroyed Antonov An-225.

It would be like standing inside a microwave oven when the radar sweeps through you. There's like a 100 feet burn hazard in front of a radiating weather radar. Now that has some safety margin built in, but you really don't want to be standing in front of one.

@@jsj297 Automatic Terminal Information Service. It is an automated broadcast about conditions at an airport. From weather, to closed taxiways, etc. They are updated regularly and use a letter of the alphabet so if you heard Bravo 10 minutes ago, but the tower says Charlie is the latest ATIS, then you need to listen to the ATIS channel again to get updated info.

Wow, we're seeing so many of these near-accidents because of controllers trying to sequence flights too tightly. I wonder if pilots need to be more aware and ready to reject takeoff or landing clearances. Both the Delta and American pilots knew what was going on. The Delta was told the AA was 5 miles out when they were cleared to line up and wait. That means DL had only around 1.5-2 minutes to get out of the way of the landing AA - and it was still pulling into position at that point. (I hope I have my math right.) That sounds crazy to me.

It seems like an easy mistake to make, especially if you have two different runways that start with a “4.” But apologizing when you make a mistake (instead of blaming it on the pilots) is the mark of an incredible ATC!

Here’s a funny story about my experience 20+years ago with JFK tower.. I was just a private pilot in my buddies Cessna 150 (N60388) and was flying along the beach at 500 feet. I contacted the tower on 119.1, and called in for traffic advisories. Well the portable intercom I had in the plane was not working right, and after the 4th time calling, the tower controller said, “just open the window and yell down what you want, I’ll be able to hear you better!” Lol I spit laughed all over the panel..

We need more of this. We encourage pilots to communicate errors, confess and comply. It is refreshing to get this from the controllers, especially the NYC area controllers who have earned their reputations for being abrasive.
