Must Have Equipment After Spine Surgery

  • Here is the suggested equipment to use after spine surgery.
Having equipment after spine surgery is necessary to help with every day activities and adhere to restrictions including no bending or twisting after surgery.
A reacher and grabber is great for trying to pick anything up off the floor or get items from hard to reach places. Use a reacher to avoid bending or twisting when trying to grab items.

A raised toilet seat is a must have to get on and off the toilet after surgery. Low toilets can be painful and difficult to get down to which is why I recommend getting a raised seat to put on your toilet. I would make sure the raised toilet seat has handles to help with holding onto something for safety.

An ice pack after surgery is also necessary to help control pain and inflammation. Usually your surgeon will send you home with one but I recommend one that you can velcro and strap to your body so that you can walk and move with it and it stays in place. Here is a link to an ice pack I purchased before my surgery which worked really well. amzn.to/43Lf20L (paid link)

Thanks for the suggestions! Having TLIF in two weeks after ending up in ER on vacation in Athens, Greece! Two years of steroid shots and PT didn't make my pain any better, so I am very much looking forward to gardening and beekeeping and living an active life again! Hope your recovery continues to go awesomely!

This is very helpful! Thank you. I really like that ice pack that wraps around the body. Super handy. I have made arrangements for the raised toilet seat and I have one of those handy dandy pickers.

Im on the list for this surgery, terrified, my home isnt ideal, has steps and winter here is icy, i also have a large old dog, that all worries me! I gotta go out and walk, so winter is gonna be hard here, having the op in spring or summer seems a good idea, im not sure i can wait, but will try! Thanks for the tips

Can you arrange for someone to come help you for the first few days or so?

I never comment on videos, but just wanted to let you know that I appreciate your videos. I'm 7 days post-op with the same surgery in my L4/L5.

It's been a few months after your surgery how are you feeling? I had my second microdiscectomy on my L5 S1 a month ago, my first one was less painful and fast recovered but the second one is by 50% more painful. I had the same disc ruptured 2 times, unfortunately.

Overall I'm feeling much better. I've still got weakness into my leg but that seems to be slowly improving. It could take 1-2 years to come back due to the nerve damage. I hope you are recovering well!

What concerns me, is that I need either disc replacement or fusion L1 thru S2, plus Rotoscoliosis. Which I need surgery for, oh and I didn’t mention I need a cervical disc/or fusion due to cervical stenosis. I have severe pain in groin area, just had a hip replacement due to a fall, and… blah blah. I am 65. Just . In my past was very physical ( which of course exacerbated disc degeneration. So…. What do I do first? Low back, rotoscoliosis or neck? Oh, and I have MAST cell. Any suggestions???

It seems like you have a complicated history and case. I would seek out the best surgeon and probably get multiple opinions. Feel free to email me further at eric@fuelphysicaltherapy.com

I’m having TLIF L4-L5 surgery soon. Besides a raised toilet seat how do you clean yourself afterwards? Would you recommend a bidet?

I was just careful with wiping but a bidet would be helpful as well!
