  • British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has called a surprise election for the 4th of July - months earlier than expected. Sunak and his Conservatives are trailing badly in opinion polls, and most observers had expected him to delay the vote to give his party a chance to make up ground. But the prime minister said "now is the moment for Britain to choose its future."

It's a shame that the US and the UK have such messed up electoral systems. You urgently need more parties and more options. Best wishes from a German friend! 🇩🇪🤝🇬🇧

The UK needs "electoral reform". Sadly, the Labour Party will not allow that - nor will they allow Brexit to be reversed, and the UK to rejoin the EU.
I cannot vote Labour for their "support" of Brexit. Only the Lib Dems are in favour of rejoining the EU (perhaps the Green Party?)

@@dustintacohands1107 Whose president? Germany has a president, but he is not allowed to make policy, we have a chancellor for that. And the United Kingdom has a prime minister.
As for the German Chancellor, I can say that nobody is more against Putin than Olaf Scholz. But that doesn't automatically mean that he has to be Zelenskyy's best friend or that Germany suddenly no longer has any interests of its own. WE alone decide what we do or don't do, and neither Putin nor Zelenskyy nor Biden have any say in the matter. And certainly not a Mexican with taco sauce on his hands and a poor command of English.

@@hape3862 You might not know this if you haven't already looked at Britain's political system, Britain doesn't have the same Proportional Representation system that Germany does. this means that a party's number of voters does not decide how many seats they will get in the Parilament. You can look at the 1983 election to see an example of this: the SDP-LIberal Party got 25% of the vote, but they were only 3% of the seats.
That's why our elections are so bad, and we can't change it.

"I will prove to you" - shouldn't he have already proved it?
"... will not put our hard earned economic stability at risk" - like Brexit?
"... restore pride and confidence ..." - That Brexit destroyed and the Tories haven't restored?
    And it goes on ...

I'm saying this as a British person. I have looked at DW before and I am well impressed. I think DW can cover British politics better than almost any British news source I have seen. This is better than the BBC, The Daily Express, The Daily Mail, The Guardian or The Mirror. No joke, I find my country incredibly depressing.

    • @mark63424able

UK and US politics are quite different. Ukraine has cross-party support in the UK - its not seen as a left v right issue like it is in the US. Thats probably because the UK is european and feels much closer to the conflict. After Labour was defeated in the 2019 GE they shifted further towards the centre politically, and as a result their foreign policy is now pretty much on par with the Tories. This unfortunately also means Labour are officially Eurosceptic and reject the idea of a 2nd EU refurendum. Its wierd because both of the UKs main parties are Eurosceptic but when it comes to defence they are staunchly pro-NATO and pro-multilateralism which seems contradictory.

    • @mikehinson5935

@@mikehinson5935 They both (officially) are against EU membership and against a 2nd EU refurendum, despite many polls suggesting the majority of Brits view Brexit as a mistake. Demographically, Euroscepticism skews older so at some point all the main parties will have to reconcile with the younger generation who by and large view Brexit as a huge mistake.
