New rocker no movie transformation is healthy. Even the ones that make them get fit and strong which require starving yourself to lose fat and force yourself to eat to gain muscle. For joker Joaquin Phoenix lost 40 pounds by eating only spinach and flax seeds. For Man if steel Henry Cavill ate 5000 calories a day.

Bale's the sort of actor to genuinely try and get an actual heart attack to go deeper into his role. He's a maniac, and that's why he's so awesome.
And now look at Bale. Gained all that weight for the movie role and now it's gone. Amazes me how he does that every couple of years.

Best two actors for the past twenty years have been Daniel Day Lewis and Bale. Bale puts himself out there more frequently, though.
Not even close, Bale physically transforms but he is never quite as good vocally with accents or feeling the character as much as someone that fully transforms. He has the same raspy "I wanna have sex with you" voice in batman as he does in the movie Vice or Termanator Salvation. He really relies on the physical aspect but if you look at Day Lewis, he can change his entire personality and voice without even changing his looks and you forget it's him. Bale is definitely good but we have many more actors who are better. Joaquin Pheonix is a better actor than Bale.
Tom Hardy as well is a better actor. If you look at Hardy in Bronson and then skip to watching The Drop right after you can see how insane he is at acting, or watch Lawless.

A lot of discipline indeed. Remember though he is doing this under the guidance of several experts. Highly likely that he is using drugs too (steroids to gain weight, stimulants to lose weight). It's not healthy nor sustainable but the risk is worth it for someone who is dedicated to his profession and a stickler for deeply getting into his character.

He has been my all time favorite actor since seeing him in The mechanic and American Psycho, and when he was pretty young, in a lesser known film called All The Little Animals - which really struck me. The acting was PERFECT, Christian Bale and Amy Adams, the Best method actors that could have played these roles (from Junebug to Lynne Cheney, Amy Adams has got to be the Meryl Streep of her generation) .
