- The stick shift is a dying breed, so I filmed a full review of this one before they re-design this model and remove the "standard" manual transmission as an option. Probably.

Bought a Subaru hatchback Impreza (5 speed manual) in Sept 2022. I love it! I had been driving a 2007 Legacy wagon-great car. I bought the new Impreza because in the future Subaru will not offer manual transmission. I will only drive a 5-speed! Old school and proud of it!
Sept 2022 is in the future. Also was it hard finding a stick? I know most dealers don't want or can't get the manuals
@@mrwhips3623 I factory ordered the car with the manual transmission via a Subaru dealer which took about 5 months. I live in Montana and there are a number of Subaru dealers because of the demand for AWD vehicles given the icy roads during the long winter. The car was delivered to my house which was really convenient since the dealer is 120 miles away. At least for now, Subaru is offering manual transmission; however, not every dealer has one in stock, so I think a factory order is required.
I love how simple it is I love that they focused more on usability rather than style
Got the exact car 5 weeks ago, love it , still getting used to the over rev. 2500 miles and getting 31, 32 miles to the gallon consistently.
You bought the car shown in this video or an identical one?
@@gsilva220 identical , 5 speed , pearl white.
Interesting. I really want to know this sir. Are there any thing you dislike about the car from the ownership point of view?
What is over rev ?
@@dianedougwhale7260 over rev is the engine RPMs escalating on transmission shift.
I pick up my base 2022 Impreza hatchback with a manual on Monday. Needed something practical with AWD, and inventory everywhere seems to be slim pickings, across all makes. Today, I happened to find one in a neighboring state that someone ordered in, but opted to not take delivery. Going to grab that stick shift while I still can!
Congrats Keith, enjoy it,!
I picked up a 2019 impreza hatchback base model had it for 3 years and i love it reason for buying it because of the awd and manual transmission also i was lucky to get it in island pearl blue. Fits perfect for m family of 4 and good on gas
Ordered one this past week. Did a few add ons to give it the appearance of being sporty. Great video though, can't wait to pick mine up in 3 months time.
Stick? It better be bro
Great commentary, thanks.
Nice video. I bought the 18 base hatch in silver, with the stick and I enjoy it. Removing the rev hang via a custom tune does make the shifting much nicer!
Thank you for watching!
I have a 23 Impreza sedan with a manual. Did you have your car tuned or do it yourself? What kind of tune was it? I'd like to do something to eliminate the rev hang as well. Any advice?
Probably would help the mpg too.
I bought a ‘22 impreza wagon 5speed base in Crystal White beginning of December. By the way there is a way to dettach the middle seatbelt when you fold it down, there’s a slot you can depress with your key or a similar.
Yeah I also pulled the rear seat headrest off for better visibility......🏹🤠👍
Excellent info. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Ordered one today.
Lol...had to edit this post. I upgraded the shift-knob to the leather option. Thank goodness, cuz I forgot just how *FUGLY* the factory one is!! 🤣🤣
My 07 Impreza has the EXACT same shift knob as this 2022 model lol.
I own a 2012 vw jetta with 5 manual speed trans and im lookimg to get a new car next year and this is my 2nd option, the 1st is the hyundai accent with manual transmission
Is it possible to get a digital display for current speed in the base model? Went through the options using the SWC but nothing that will display speed other than the analog face in the cluster.
If it is possible you would access it with the up/down arrows on the lower left quadrant of the steering wheel.
I'd be curious if the hatchback SPORT models shifting is noticeably better. I understand it comes standard with the "STi short shifter" option. I also wonder how close to a fun "WRX"-like experience (minus the new one's cladding and iPad and lack of hatch) you can get if you order the Impreza Sport trim then and add the STi strut tower brace accessory, plus, maybe the STi wheels with some fun/sticky tires. Still down on power, but maybe still fun to drive?
The STI short throw shifter does make a difference but its not huge. The car you are describing (Sport Hatch with all the STI bits and some sticky tires) would be fun to drive, it would handle very well, but in my opinion what you would miss the most from the WRX (besides the power, obviously) is the steering feel. I haven't driven the newest WRX, but all those that came before had very communicative steering, and the Impreza just doesn't. The Impreza handles well, better than you might expect actually, you just don't get much information from the steering wheel.
@@CarDietrich Interesting, thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience!
You're very welcome!
Did you view the TOP GEAR Episode where they installed every Boy Racer modification-- suspension lowered-fancy shocks--expensive sticky tires-free flow exhaust etc.etc.The thing was slower around the test track--some times a car can perform better if it leans a bit on its softer suspension-- and can slide in a controlled manner on slightly less sticky tires-- as a further comment-- with a longer stroke engine--change sooner (lower revs) drive it on the torque-- my 6 speed stick Corolla will pull away from as low as 1000 revs. without protest--When in the mood-- flat to the floor- but change at only 4000revs or do and ride the Torque-- like a big rig-- keep it in the Torque band-- this even applies to short stroke motors-- 427 short stroke V8-- absolutely no point in revving past the maximum torque area 👍
Great video! Did you find another Subaru dealer to work for? I hope they let you post great videos! Thanks from Idaho!
Thank you for watching Idris! Funny story there, I did find another Subaru dealer to work at but they were not real excited about me making videos there, which is why their license plate is not featured in this video. Nonetheless it was a good place to work, but they got acquired by another company last month and I elected not to sign on with the new company because I've been through that before and its not the greatest experience, and inventory is so low right now that it wasn't a whole lot of fun to sell to cars. So I am once again unemployed, but of my own volition this time. Thanks again for watching!
@@CarDietrich That sucks. Best of luck!
I have a 2010 hatchback manual sport premium
I’m actually searching desperately for a manual 5 door Impreza. I may order one, but I’m willing to go 600 miles to pick it up if a place a few states away has it. I’ve only owned manuals. Can’t imagine any other way.
I would recommend ordering it. The sooner you place the order, the sooner you'll get it.
@@CarDietrich I tried to order on but all dealers i spoke with said the pipeline is closed for impreza but that i can order a manual base crosstrek.
@@CarDietrich I’m hella late on this but my beloved Jetta was totaled the other day and I’m looking at ordering one of these. What’s the downtime on an order? My dad had to wait 6 months for a wrangler but I don’t have that amount of time
@@Iraqveteran-ke6qu any update on your quest? Curious to see what did you end up at
@@edgaryzen4925 I ended up with a smoking deal on a 2011 Lexus LS460 dealer maintained and drives like new. $8k OTD from a Honda dealership in Sacramento. I
Thanks!
You are very welcome Kevin! Thank you!
I have a 18 Crosstrek with 6 spd manual.
Thank you for buying a stick shift!
I just bought an used Impreza sport in Manual. Could you tell me "Please" what you usually run the RPM at for cruising in gear. I have been shifting at 3,000 rpm and generally cruise at 2,500. Would you agree with my normal operating treatment as i want this car to last me a long time. Thank you and great video.
Those are certainly good shift points, but you should know that revving the engine is not the same as abusing it. As long as the oil changes are done on time and the oil level is topped up and the engine is warmed up to normal operating temperature, it won't hurt it to rev it higher sometimes. Subarus can burn oil in the course of normal operation so I recommend checking the oil every 1,000 miles and topping it off if it needs it, oil change every 6,000 miles and change the spark plugs every 60,000 miles per factory recommendation.
@@CarDietrich Thank you for the info. I've decided that if I hit 2'000rpm (slowing down) it's time to downshift. Likewise if I hit 3,000rpm it is time to up shift. I want this engine to last an long time.
Smaller engines usually require more revs at the lower gears to get the car moving quickly. Because this car is All wheel drive, I think it needs more revs than say a Honda Civic. I've been driving this car for a year and I generally upshift at 2,500-3,500 rpm when driving on 35-40 mph roads. The "control" part of the manual is that you're allowed to rev the car high in the lower gears. It's not bad to redline it in 1st gear, it just uses more gas than needed (per drivers manual the Impreza max speed at 1st gear is 30mph). I'd say it's more important to listen to the engine instead of focusing on the RPMs
My 2021 manual Impreza gives me 6.5 litres/100 km (35 MPG) in the highway with the a/c on, and I am happy with this. The car is not particularly fast compared to a Civic, on dry conditions. But when winter comes here in Canada the opposite is true. And on slippery roads the Subaru's full time AWD is far better than the "grip & slip" Haldex system used by Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Hyundai, etc. Also, the base model doesn’t have a push button start... my niece calls this and the stick shift “the best millennial antitheft devices”
Interesting, that's very close to what my 2020 Impreza with the CVT got
I love Subaru, I love stick shift manual cars. Its better to drive a stick shift in the snow 👍
I totally agree, they are better in the snow!
@@CarDietrich why is manual better in snow?
Growing up as a half giant must've been rough. YOLO Bro
I need one can u ship to NY
Have had 4 Subarus all Manuel trans. Current habe a 1998 Impreza l wagon 2.2 5 speed lobe it in snow
Has this one sold? I'd be willing to cross the country to buy it .
It did finally sell. It was on the lot for over two months before it did though!
Doesn’t the fj20 engine the one that drinks oil
I want to buy the 5 door sport impreza with a manual. Next year I should be able to.
The problem with selling Subaru is that the 2000 model cars still feel new, they are reliable, take a beating, look like space craft, still win races, so it's tough to buy new ones, you end up with a pile of Legacies and Outbacks the look like you're doing a museum exhibit to show to evolution of the Subaru
a regular subaru aint wining no races. no sir.
OP, why not you do review on other manual car like Mitsubishi Mirage or Nissan Versa? You do have the attributes to make great contents.
Thank you for your compliment, I will keep my eyes open for one of those cars to review. Unfortunately, as I'm sure you know stick shift cars are uncommon these days :/
10 to 20 years? It's already here in Canada. I want that exact car right now but totally unavailable and 30k after tax
Is this in Arcadia/Monrovia?
Closer to Duarte
Manual transmission buyers are more likely to want a hatchback I’m thinking.
But why? I can't understand it if the sedan by design is intended to haul folks comfortably with stuff in the trunks 🤔
not me I don't like hatchbacks
@@truckergilligangilligan5877I like both sedan and hatchback. Both serve a complete separate purpose :)
I have been looking for that car! Nobody has one.
I found mine online and went to an Ford dealership to get it. It was an year old with 21,000 on it but if I bought new from a Subaru dealership it would have cost me $7,000 more. Almost an $4,000 markup😂.
I would love to learn how to drive shift. Can you teach me and I will buy the car!
Believe it or not in my time selling cars I've probably done that for 15 or 20 people, usually in their own brand new WRX lol. BUT I CAN HELP YOU! I made a video on how to drive a stick with my own WRX STI that I had a few years ago:
czcams.com/video/5s2B0DqRPP0/video.html
I want this car, I can't find a manual anywhere!
It did eventually sell, but it was on the lot for about two months before it did!
The problem that I have with the current manuals is that you can only get them as a base model. If I had the option at the Sport trim model as a manual, then I would be buying that.
You can get a Sport Hatchback with a manual transmission for the 2022 model year. You used to be able to get a Sport Sedan with a manual as well, but nobody bought them so they stopped making them. Go order a Sport Hatchback and buy it before they stop making them too.
We ordered our 2022 Impreza in august 2021. Received it in October. We have the premium sedan. We also own a base 2018 hatchback. The base 2018 has one zonk. IT BEEDS S SET OF WHEELS. We have lost 12 hubcaps. Buy the premium trim. Now, our 2022 Impreza premium sedan, is a perfect commute car. Subaru needs to at least offer the 2.5 engine. The Impreza is weak.
You can get some nice wheels from Tire Rack, I use the Sport Edition brand on my Impreza Limited, about $120 per wheel these days. I am using them for my 16" winter tires now, with a set of 16" Subaru wheels in the summer. I do not use the 17's that came on my Limited, too many potholes around the NYC area.
I would LOVE to "save" Manuals, but the only problem is I'm addicted to "Cruise Control".... It's a MUST have for me now. (LOL, didn't realize manuals also had Cruise Control)
Really I think Manuals only should exist on "small sports" type cars anymore... So, people who want the sport effect with their car, they can get a manual on it and have fun. If I ever get a fun sports car as an extra car, I WILL want the Manual for sure... So, FYI for the Manufacturers....
I have become addicted to Adaptive Cruise Control, which is really only practical on an automatic transmission. But yes for a fun second car Manual is preferable. Luckily some "fun" cars (WRX, MX-5, Mustangs, etc) are typically still available with manuals because the demand is there for those.
Wish I could find a base manual now with the tan interior. This isn't a $30K+ car like all the dealers have them spec'd at.
Subaru doesn't allow their dealers to order cars for inventory, they just build them and ship them out. So your dealer didn't specify the cars that way, Subaru did. And if you really want a stick shift you better get one soon, they will no longer be available when the new body style comes out for the 2024 model year.
Is this still for sale
I guess it did finally sell. It was in that dealer's inventory for at least another month after I made that video. Sticks just don't sell!
AVH or Hill Assist?
No AVH but yes it does have hill assist
@@CarDietrich Nice feature even if they make available when stopped and in neutral at least. AVH has separate systems than transmission other than pressing the gas disables it. My observation.
@@CarDietrich I read the EBB is disengage when you step on the gas. Work around, same as the old days except you dont have to manually release hand brake… I will try when I test drive the Impreza.
2.5 has head gasket issues
where this at i buy it
Somebody did finally buy it, but it was on the lot for 60 days during a car shortage!
@@CarDietrich I found mine at an Ford dealership. They said it had been on the lot for some time.
You could not give it to me, I have a Subaru Impreza premium trim sedan. The CVT is way better than the the stick shift. Also, the bad comes with steel wheels and hubcaps. I bought a 2018 Impreza base trim. In the 68,000 miles that I drove that car, I lost a total.of 12 hubcaps. Get at least the premium trim. I will own tgat 2018. When I needed to buy tires, I bought a set of after market wheels.
I've had my 2022 for 6 months. It was previously owned with 9500 miles when I bought it, and had the oil changed once before I bought it. Went to have the oil changed again after owning it (same dealership did both oil changes) and had them rotate the tires as well. They broke one of the hub caps completely off and cracked the tabs on the the others. "That just happens when you hit potholes. We'll gladly sell you new ones." Fuck outta here...15,000 miles and you guys are the only ones that's ever taken those covers off and won't replace them when you break them, well kiss my ass then..😒
Ide get one...but I can't afford it....usually those of us who prefer stick shifts are poor, ill never own another automatic.
I won't comment on anyone's economic status, but I will say that as a rule of thumb, people who have their hearts set on a manual transmission are much more likely to be looking at used cars. Unfortunately this is another reason manufacturers don't build them anymore, they are far more interested in selling new cars than used ones.
@@CarDietrich Yea, I have never been able to afford a new car. Right now I have a 1996 Camaro Z28 convertible with the 6 speed manual transmission...very fun car but a money pit.
That is a fun car, and I also imagine it could be a money pit. It's funny because I have had so many comments from people wishing manufacturers built more cars with manual transmissions, which I totally understand as a car enthusiast. BUT, I have also worked as a car salesman for 15 years, so I see it from the manufacturer's point of view too. There are lots of reasons for them not to build manual transmissions anymore, the primary reason being the damn things just sit there on the lot like this one did. So I had an idea: I want to buy a car (I'd really love a 4th Gen F-Body or an SN95 Mustang with a V8) that has a manual transmission but needs a lot of work, and be like "Ok folks, the only way we're gonna keep stick shifts around is take care of the ones that have already been built. So I'm gonna take this pile and fix it on up." And then take the car and do what needs to be done to it: tune up, body work, paint job, clutch, tires whatever. And make videos about that whole process, and then when the car is done auction it off on eBay motors. I would surely lose money on this process, but the question is would I make enough money back from ad revenue, gained subscribers, and tax write offs to make it make sense? At the beginning of this year I was actually searching for a car to do this with, but the car market is so screwed up right now that you can't even buy a clunker for cheap. So I took the money that I was going to spend on that and rented new cars off of Turo to review them instead. But that idea is still in my mind.. Do you think its a good one? Because I go back and fourth on it. It feels like a risk.
Always leave in gear when parked
Would prefer automatic…..no stick shift.
Hahaha this is the first car review that told us the cold hard truth about manuals. Yep the reason why manuals are slowly vanishing is because the keyboard warriors won't even buy one🤣 save the manual my ass.
