Amazon sellers see increase in scam returns, Wall Street Journal reports

- Returning Amazon packages may be an easy process for customers, but sellers are reporting growing problems. The Wall Street Journal reported that vendors are "plagued by a surge in scam returns," where instead of receiving what the customers bought, merchants are getting back junk items. Sebastian Herrera, a tech reporter for the Wall Street Journal, joined CBS News to discuss the issues.

A lot of Amazon sellers are also scammers.
Yep, you pay for new & get used items. 100%
Very true
Anyone else find cards in their packages bribing you to leave phony 5 star reviews for coupons?
But the buyers are protected. Quit your whining and do what is right morally and legally😊
I don't think anyone is advocating for taking advantage of the sellers here. They are just pointing out that scammers are also a problem with some sellers not just some buyers. That is a perfectly valid point.
The question is what can be done to make the system better for all parties? It seems like nothing short of a visual inspection at shipping, by a 3rd party, could truly help. Maybe just more bans for sellers and buyers caught abusing. But that begs who was the abuser.
That is ironic because I have seen an increase in amount of scam products being sold on Amazon
Alot of shady sellers selling quality products at first for high ratings, then switch to low quality.
its called the good old days. Selling good quality products at first for hign rating. Also the same customers can come back and buy more. then sell low quality things.
So it’s okay to scam innocent sellers because some sellers are scammers?
That may be true in some instances but more than likely, a good, ethical seller created the listing, it sold well... and then scam sellers jumped on the listing and started sending people crap under the same listing. Amazon owns all the listings. Even if the seller started the listing or created the product, Amazon owns it... and Amazon allows other people to sell the items on those listings without even verifying the product. Always look at the seller name, then check the feedback of the seller store. It's not foolproof but you'll avoid a lot of scammy sellers that way.
Some sell counterfeits
You’re right. I purchased a set of sheets and they were great. A year later I purchased the same sheets and they were garbage. I never got a email to review them. I then looked the recent reviews and the same thing is happening to others.
Even worse is when they don't check the return and resell it. Sadly received several items that were broken.
Same here, even products that cost hundreds were clearly already opened with marks, etc.
yeah and then at that point you dont know if amazon is screwing you over or the seller is scamming you, and sadly this is a very common issue.
Agreed. At least twice I received the box for the item I ordered with the wrong item inside so it clearly was returned and resold.
Yeah😂 and I swore I wouldn't buy the warehouse products ever again but I did 3 more times and 3 more times were they broken. 1 still had water in it leaking all over😂 no bs. Then try to offer me only like 15$or something dumb.
Sometimes I wonder if news reporting such as this just teaches more people how to do scams.
no i think most people are good, but scammers are going to scam!
I believe you're right.
😂😂😂
it does
Dishonest people already know how to scam and honest people aren’t going to be affected by it.
I ordered from Amazon and received an empty plastic bag. How could this happen? The delivery man should feel odd that he delivered a package weight almost zero. Then when I initiated the return process, there is no option that they delivered an empty bag so I have to be creative. Choose "not all components are in the package".
I have been Prime member for years but I feel the quality is going down the drain in the past few months. Also now I have to watch ads when I watch Prime video. I think I will cancel my membership soon.
Cancelled ours right after Christmas after they announced the commercials thing as well as a bad experience with an item I purchased that was somewhat "scammy". Avoiding them most of them time now. The quality has gone down the drain and part of that is due to their own greed. They let anyone sell on their platform and they don't vet sellers well enough or keep an eye on quality. I don't feel a bit sorry for them.
@@flohough1870 I hate to tell you this, but the store is just a 'side hustle' to Amazon these days.
Their core business nowadays is the web hosting. Are you familiar with Amazon Web Services or how the 'web services' are lumped into their R&D costs?
How is the delivery guy supposed to know the package is empty?? 😂 don't be so dense. Not everything shipped is heavy. Duhhhh.😂
Sometimes the delivery person steals the content of the package. Happened to me once. He was in the amazon truck for a very long time, I was wondering what was going on. After delivering it, he wasn’t smart enough to take a pic from the side of the box that looked ok.
Most Amazon drivers are gig workers and would deliver a shipping label by itself with nothing attached with no further thought.
This is nothing compared to what really is going on inside Amazon.
Imma bite... what's happening inside Amazon?
NDA lol u don't wanna get HR to bite
I'll tell. I use to work for Amazon. They have this form that anyone can fill out. If you score a bad rating, they will fire you. Also, Amazon pays it's workers below poverty wages and can blacklist you even though blacklisting is illegal. Also, Amazon One is part of the upcoming Mark of the Beast system and is tracking all buyers & sellers transactions & sending it to the NSA for storage a the data center in Utah. Also, their healthcare is expensive and manufacturers and corporate people are treated like a soda can: replacable and expendable. Jeff Bezos should rot in prison for how he runs and treats his employees. It's a very evil company to work for. STAY AWAY!
I rarely return unless i got something defective
There are scammers on both sides, Seller and Buyer.
Thank you for this great insight that pushes everyone forward.
Sellers from China. Its a big big issue.
@@mstinamichele Sellers from America re selling junk they buy off Aliexpress is a huge problem as well.
100% true no support from Amazon
How about actual details , Just can't take Sellers @ face value on comments without facts
Amazon would prefer someone else lose money instead.
@@BlackJesus8463 Well of course
45 years ago I was shocked to learn grocery stores ran at 3% Profit margin.
Most participate in Amazon because they are in the middle of a room down market.
I see the Gig workers complaining but they are going in at the bottom of the Market .
Grocery stores have diversified today and now have a better capture of their Market in the range of 15%
Are you kidding me I've never had a problem with Amazon returning stuff for people are very very good I've been using Amazon just about since they started I think I have one problem with something anything and they gave me my money back
@IndependentVoter2020
Amazon has a " the customer is always right policy." If a customer complains, they get their money back fast. Scammers make use of that. Search here on YT, you'll find many people telling their story.
There are a record number of scams out there and it’s getting worse by the day.
yes i can feel it in my wallet every day! SMH
I've been scammed a couple times by Amazon sellers so it's hard to feel to bad.
Same. And it’s increased in the past year like crazy. I’ve tried to file complaints and they don’t seem to care. So many products with one star reviews and the business is still up.
and what about the vendors that scam the consumer? There's no punishment for them. It's so rampant and bad that we won't even buy from third party vendors anymore. If it doesn't say ship/sold by amazon we won't touch it
I got scammed on Etsy and they didn’t return my money
How does a vendor scam a buyer? You have buyer and credit card protection, and usually 30 days returns. I can’t see how that would realistically happen
The same thing happens with eBay.
I'm sorry to hear that! I was pretty much forced to stop selling on ebay when they switched to all listings being "Good Til Cancelled." I had over 500 listings, 100% favorable reviews and was expanding.
I understand that ebay has since brought back different types of listings. But my sales were more of a hobby than a business and I am disinclined to revive 500+ listings when I now have other interests - especially if returns have gotten bad like this.
EBAY have A lot of Scam , and E Bay don’t even care , cheating me Over $ 700 , never and never buy again from EBAY ,
Much worse on Ebay
@@DistrustHumanz not even close amazon is by far the worse. i would say 100X i sell on both platforms over 27 years on ebay 25 years on amazon
Not true, eBay actually takes the sellers side now in most cases. They have a new program now that tracks buyers returns & reasons for returns in an effort to catch and eliminate bad buyers/scammers
I work at a large retail store. When a customer wants to return an item, it must be inspected and be in the same condition it was when new in box. If not, no return! I've caught a few trying to scam me but most returns are just fine.
that like ebay but not amazon! SMH
@@alexlim1275 High value items on Amazon absolutely go through an inspection. It will not refund you until Amazon receives it and someone looks at it. I've had a few items like that.
But every other cheap item does not get that treatment.
The company I work for holds refunds and customers get furious. Now I understand why
Corporations are scamming customers and customers are scamming corporations back. Only difference is, the customers will be the only ones to face consequences.
A lot of Amazon merchants are ma and paps businesses, not corporations. Their margins are slim and scams can put them out of business.
Amazon should be liable for damages if they want to keep using this return system
I am an Amazon seller and it’s true. One out of 20 returns a customer has switched out items or removed contents completely. There’s nothing we can do but just take the hit. People are getting away with this too often.
That's absurd. It's as if Amazon created incentives for scammers. I find that very hard to believe, it's just overly stupid.
you guys need to get together and fight it. refunds should not be given till returned items are inspected and approved
You're just a scammer. The customer is charged for items that r not returned properly.
@@alexanderkennedy2969that's how it works for me.
Walk into a ups store and it's all Amazon returns 😂
Ok everyone was just reporting how returns don’t get restocked and end up in liquidation sales and landfills…
@dixienormus1619 Not true...infact there are several youtubers who make money off buying liquidation sales of items returned...and the items are all good and never been used.
I think that's Amazon products, not those of their resellers...
Just charge them for the item if they don’t return it.
CBS news YOU NEED TO DO ONE ON AMAZON PRODUCTS BEING SOLD AS NEW BUT BEING USED
That’s something you need to read the fine print on it says on the page if it is used or not better yet I’ll give you a clue if it says LPN at the beginning of what we call the Asin(the bar code or upc) in the product description it is used😂 I worked five years in a robotics facility doing problem solving You can definitely see if the product is used in the product description
NOTHING CAN REPLACE A PHYSICAL STORE
But physical store can't replace an online store.
uh yea it can😂😂😂
True but most of the things I need can't buy in store. My college books on the low is one of them. The stores don't have very nice clothes so I go online for nicer things
I stopped shopping at Lowe’s because I was purchasing new items yet when I got home they are used, missing parts or in the case of liquids have been opened and replaced with water.
Sometimes people in the post office steal the items too, when my husband was in Mexico I sent him a new phone and he never received it and it’s been a few times when my order was never received.
Anything over $100 and they get a little more demanding.
This happens alot on ebay also... mostly for electronics.
not even close amazon is by far the worse. i would say 100X i sell on both platforms over 27 years on ebay 25 years on amazon
Just like consumers may get rocks or flip flops, lets not forget about the warehouse staff shipping customers incorrect items also.
i sell 100's of things on amazon daily and its usually 99.9% accurate. the warehouse staff send incorrect items is insignificant amount.
Tbh some of these Amazon sellers be scamming people.
Biggest issue is with 3rd party seller and sending fake/opened product.
This should not be happening at all. When you return something (in Canada) it goes to the Amazon Warehouse first to be checked. The item must then match item slip. Then that slip is scanned, then you get your refund. In my opinion, this is an Amazon (US) procedures issue.
When I purchased roller coaster tycoon classic.... I got sent roller coaster tycoon world TWICE in a row. I doubt they bother checking what they sell.
Canada is smaller than the US.
I’m in the US and when I return something to Amazon I always get a refund as soon as the shipment is recorded by UPS… so if I sent back a box of trash I would still get my money back, though I don’t know what would happen later on. Plus it might be different with items sold directly by Amazon vs other sellers.
You don't get it, it's really Amazon scamming the sellers, they want to sell their OWN products instead!
Amazon is an illegal monopoly, they should be boycotted. Do some search, usually you will find plenty of local (online) shops, I even check on eBay and Aliexpress before buying from Amazon...
@@Sashazur later they would charge you again.
Amazon used to ban customers if they returned things often. Still the rule?
If you were a retailer, how would you handle it?
NOooo. I return around 60% of the 500 or so items I purchase annually with zero questions. Often used and damaged. You can send them just about anything the remotely resembles the item and you get refunded, Akbar or hussien that looks at it has no idea what it is 90% of the time and even if they did they don't care. I started a youtube channel and returned every product after review, sometimes buying and returning the same item multiple times a month. Been doing that for years.
@@user-sx1ov1bu2w this shouldnt be allowed though. If the return is not like new, if the return reason isnt a direct result of something the seller did or the product is blatantly defective, the refund should not happen.

@@Real-comment-unreal-name 🤓
they're gonna just resale as used under amazon warehouse . In the end , the customer is the one who pay for it...
The rumor was that the package got trashed once received by an Amazon driver, as it costs too much to return and repackage items.
Now they bulk them into a pallet and sell them to bin stores across the country where unsuspecting customers buy it and get home and finds out that there are dirty shoes in it or something equally gross will Amazon made some money back by selling it in a pallet without even opening the return package to find out that they were scammed. So they pass the scam along to a different end buyer.
With so many 3rd party scammers selling on Amazon its only fair play if fed up 3rd party sellers get scammed back.
And this is why 3rd party is not to be trusted.
I refuse to buy anything but PRIME. I don’t think I’ve ever had a major issue (knock on wood) that I wasn’t able to fix with one phone call with Prime.
Don’t buy from 3rd party Amazon sellers, that goes for Walmart or Best buy marketplace sellers, usually inflated prices and the worst return policies.
I would have never thought of doing something like that. People can be unscrupulous.
I'm surprised this reporting has come out sooner. Sooner or later, the item is gonna have to be scanned (like a picture of the whole product) to match the return.
🤔 Really? Perhaps they can flag those who returned too many items in junk conditions and will only issue full refunds after sellers agree. If 10% of people abused the system, punish those 10%, not all customers.
or where the sellers can report buyers, its like the wild wild west on the platform. im looking at 25 returns today and that every day i see those numbers!
@@alexlim1275 : 🤔 You can't report buyers? That doesn't seem fair, especially if it's the same bunch of people most of the time.

What happened to the good old brick and mortar retail ?
You want the convenience of ordering online , so then deal with the side effects.
Did the co-host say a single word?
Speaking from personal experience as a buyer I have received many "new" items that are clearly returns that are broken or have intermittent issues. Also amz uses the public to test out their amz warehouse junk sending it to up to 3 buyers before listening to the 1st returner.
And if it's a high return item the will put the price up as soon as you order it and when you get a DOA unit you have to buy a new unit and pay more. Tricks of the trade.
Meanwhile, there is me who don't even return which even the item is not up to the standard
I've been doing that for items with superficial defects, too... One even came in a damaged, original package from the brand (ie the same box I would get buying in a brick and mortar shop!), without any protection, it had obviously been already opened, and there was a (very light) mark on the surface.
But functionality was good, so I kept it...
So don't sell on Amazon???
Scammers mess it up for everyone else. I hope Amazon starts cancelling scammers accounts.
Why would they give a refund until they have checked what was returned first ? I would never do that !
I think Amazon gives all customers the benefit of a doubt that whatever you return is the exact product that was ordered. If they start seeing trends of returning items on a regular basis, they could certainly clamp down on that policy and even wait until the actual item is returned before issuing a refund. I think most people are honest about returns. It’s really a handful of scammers, relatively speaking, that could start making it worse for good customers.
Because they want to eliminate any competition so that they can sell their own Amazon products? They are actively killing their competitors with this trick!
Amazon is a de facto monopoly, they should be brought to court for that...
I’ll give you a hint and all the others also look at your watch if you can tell time: in on minute AMAZON just sold $1 million in products they do this 24 hours a day 7 days a week….😮
The point is that they do this with 3rd party sellers, not with their own products!
That's how they eliminate any competition by making them lose money, and strengthen their monopoly!
I work for the post office and right now at just one location we have 5 53 foot trailers full of Amazon returns that Amazon refuses to let us deliver to their warehouse they have been sitting for 4 months now. People don’t realize how many items are returned on a daily basis. It would cost Amazon more money hiring people who process returns then it would be worth it to them.
I once received a Bluetooth speaker when I ordered a different , but similar looking and similar priced device. I think it was just sent by mistake. Another time I received a cheap Chinese backpack when I ordered an Osprey daypack, this time the price difference is at least $60 by my own estimation.
You get alot of junk from Amazon and never on time or due date I hate having to order everything but local stores don't have what you want or need
Well yeah, that’s what you get when you sell scam products. I gaurentee companies like Apple, Samsung, Visio aren’t complaining about scam returns
Amazon is awful to sell on.
What’s weird is Amazon requests you don’t box it up when you return at UPS or whatever store they have a station at. I thought this was so they could verify what it was?
We never lied to Amazon ✋🏻..
Even though they are liars themselves, we never lied to them..
Total BS ... Amazon now clearly states when issuing the return credit that if they do not receive back what you said you're returning, and in the original condition, you will be charged again against your original payment method.
Yup! You are exactly right
There are 3 sellers on Amazon: Amazon, who use Amz as a fulfillment center (Amz is responsible for handling inventory and customer care and reimbursements), and 3rd party sellers (sellers who deliver their products). In this video, the ones they're screwing over are those sellers who use Amz as a fulfillment center. These sellers have no control on the chargebacks Amz does to buyers and have to prove to Amz fraudulent returns by opening cases and sending back photos of returned items.
I just started selling hair wigs on Amazon at the beginning of the year. The first month was great, but after that it hasn't been going great for me because the inventory that I have sent to be restocked was delivered to the warehouse a month ago and still isn't checked in or available for sale. Yet, Amazon is still charging me fees for that. I plan on building my own website, because clearly I can't rely on Amazon alone.
There are now more shady sellers & resellers than legit ones on there.
Has the reporter verified to see if the buyer returned the bad item, or if Amazon itself is repackaging garbage?
In more than 20 years of purchasing from Amazon, I haven't had a single case of receiving a bad product. I have received many products that didn't meet my expectations. But the return is simple. If you don't like Amazon, just don't buy from them. No one is forcing you

You are surprised? I worked for United Way 10 years ago. People would get busted returning donated toilet paper to walmart for a gift card.
One time I bought a Large Apple Watch loop band from Amazon warehouse.
FOUR times in a row I was shipped a Small/Medium in a Large box.
People were definitely swapping their sizes and returning them with the incorrect size.

So, and ? But how about the scammer seller's? What about them.
I sold a few books on Amazon and one person scanned it and returned it damaged. Amazon gave him all the money back, no questions asked. I no longer sell on Amazon. It is not worth it.
It suck’s that Amazon’s shady practices have put so many out of business that we are forced to use them even though both sellers and buyers truly hate using them.
very true
I like em. eBay always screws me with returns. Takes forever with so much red tape. I have to wait nearly a week for the seller to “make it right” and then wait another week for customer service to get their act together with no guarantees each and every day
The amount of sellers that join the marketplace in a single day is outstanding 😮
This is true I am a seller on Amazon for 20 years. The return fraud rate is too high nowadays.
Amazon sellers are scamming as well...I ordered a floor mat for my car and received a life-size Elvis pop up labeled floor mat...how that happened I will never know
Sometimes people accidentally mix up thier returns I have been working in retail customer service for a long time. I don't understand return fraud it's no different than outright theft. I have returned things to Amazon because they sent me a used, defective, wrong size or some other issue. I have been a member since they were a book market for Borders.
This is because UPS has decided to not properly check and making people send the boxes fully sealed up in another box. UPS used to check and now they are like nope.
You have the option to have a no return policy on your page
Im a happy amazon user. Stop messin up a good thing people!
Yup it only takes to a few ruin it for everyone else. This is going to get much worse before Amazon steps in.
Yeah, it’s amazing to me. I was shipped some items that were not even what I ordered. They were junk so I sent them back.
Looks like it's time for me to get those pair of shoes I've been waiting for😂😂😂
You only get a quick refund if you take it as Amazon credit. Refunds to a card, the item has to arrive back first.
No. Normally as soon as I drop off the item to Wholefoods and UPS I get refunded. If I return to Petco then yes it does take longer to get refunded.
I am so tired of these scammers! We see them in every aspect of our lives. I've also used Amazon for years and have only had one issue with an item I ordered from what I now believe was a scammer. Had to get my credit card company involved but it was resolved. I've never had problems with "fake" items. I don't return much, but when I have to, it's an easy process. With these scams, it might change.
Amazon should pay the sellers back. This is disgusting
breaks my heart...
You get confermation from Amazon for Returs and where to do it at UPS Store or others near bye ... For sellers you should know if fraud or not by whu buys.
Amazon should have a hidden rating for the customer to track who does the return frauds and ban them from purchasing on that platform.
i got some fake clothing before from amazon, the bag and the cardboard inside didn’t match the item i received
Same is true for retail stores... or parts are missing from box.
This crazy 😮
If I send a item back, I take a picture of it and then video it when am packing it in a return box. Film it all. The way to the drop off site for Amazon packages. It proves that I recieved but item did not fit, or not what I ordered. Some of those sellers sent. Me my last order an open package. I opened the bag and box lid was already torn off! So somewhere after sent out, it went through someone's hands before it got to UPS.
I have never had a refund until the seller received the item back first.
did they file police report? it is really easy to track down the buyer
I heard Amazon backs up either the seller or customer depending on their gain in a situation. Lots of people say Amazon reviews that are negative are erased. Amazon used to be reputable, but now they have adopted Chinese ways. I try to buy from other websites whenever possible.😠🤨
Oh Amazon. When I ordered one, it came damaged in the mail so I had to order another one and it came damaged AGAIN but I was able to just combine and swap the pieces from both and solved the problem. Returned the junk one. That was stupid.
I know on eBay the reporting process for sellers is a complete fraud. You talk to a chat bot who claims you're at fault 100% of the time in a matter of seconds. There really needs to be a class action lawsuit
ill have to disagree, ebay is by far better than amazon, its like night and day.
Omg! Gonna make it harder on everyone! I can see why now why my refunds are taking longer than usual
I used to buy items people returned at a discount, then about 5 years ago I started getting junk back. Not sure if sellers just never checked their returns and just sent them back out.
I am a Amazon seller, alot of people also send item back without protection 😢
Leading to getting back broken
Worst when I buy of warehouse and it a swaped return what suposed be not inside constantly.
this is so bad that people are now going back to store to shop. it goes both ways on the scams
My guess is that they are getting things back that look deceivingly in brand new condition but when sold to someone else they found something else inside.
So, they have the name and mailing address right? Do they not know they can get back to them? No? Okay...
What about sellers advertising one item on their Amazon account and when you receive your package is another item
Amazon needs to worry more about how they treat their employees on the inside.
Amazon is full of scammers too and now just in the last few months packages are arriving very late if at all and I have prime. Currently waiting on an order I ordered over a week ago.. pretty sure it’s “lost” second one in a month.
