I bought one a month ago, IMO it's a fail for several reasons: Good for wide blades only due to minimum angle provided, taking out the screw each side, and flex of the rubber jaws, preventing solid hold on blade.
Seems that you covered most of the downsides that I discovered! This won't be replacing my KME, TS-PROF, or Worksharp Precision anytime soon .. LOL 🥴🗡️👊 Thanks and very glad you covered this one!

Thanks for taking a look at this thing! I saw it listed for Preorder on Knifecenter quite a while back, and I thought it looked like a ghetto take on the Wicked Edge sharpeners (in much the same way as the Worksharp PA is a ghetto take on the KME... which was an iterative improvement on the Lansky system... digressions abound!)
It doesn't look like a system I'll pick up, especially as I already fight with low angles on the KME and Worksharp PA, and this seems to exacerbate it rather than remedy the issue.

Definatly agree on the Worksharp Precision Adjust currently being the better option as compared to this one. The worksharp gets you in the sharpening game for very little money and the expandability of it is great with so many aftermarket add on pieces to make it better over time. This one could have been great short of the instability and the wonky screw to be able to flip it over. Hopefully the issues will be corrected in the next version or some aftermarket parts will come out to take it to the next level. Thanks for the great vid Jerad and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

The worksharp has a couple of the same problems I’ve found. The low angles on narrow blades hitting the guard and the flex under pressure. But the 3d printed piece fixes that in the WS PA setup. So I agree. It is the better option. Especially with the elite add on kit.

Anything that uses edge pro stones is better as you have 100s of choices for stones. This thing would have limited options.
I'd just save up more for a hapstone or edge pro. More versatile than clamped systems. Table systems can do a variety of blade grinds.

It seems like the most important part of sharpening is the quality of the stones. You can buy rods anywhere exactly in the right size amazingly cheap. I've made my own rods with stones mounted on them which makes it incredible cheap to do. You don't have to be incredible creative to do this either. Hopefully the free handing is something I'll get better at but until that happens I'll be using my system.

Angle guides that attach to your knives and sharpening stones. That's all you need, and costs less than $50. Easier to sharpen and you don't have to worry about some contraption wobbling around. If you want to sharpen faster, get one or two mounted belt sanders, set your angles, and go to work. Strop as needed. Love Cold Steel though. Not just for knives, but everything else they sell.

Two other fixed angled systems that Always gets overlooked and I dunno why. Is DMT Aligner for 60$ comes with 325, 600, and 1200 grit diamond stones. A clamp and a stone holder and a fine diamond rod for serrations. The magna guide comes with 325, 600, 1200, and 8k stones. For 75$ (The 8,000 isn't very good) The clamp and a strong magnetic guide rod. Seven angle adjustments which is dependent on the width of the blade to figure out what angle you wanna use. I have used these for years and I get stupid sharp results. With light pressure both these kits will last between seventy five and a hundred sharpenings.

I bought a similar one to this from Aliexpress, i also bought the Tormek small blade adaptor, can do any size knife. I can get razor sharp edges with mine, if you add the Tormek adapter to this one you will get the same results. I also bolted mine to a square wooden base so it is as solid as a rock. With a bit of thought these are really good well priced little sharpeners. Also the one i purchased is based on the Wicked Edge, no need to keep changing the holder, once you have your angles you just do side to side, and also looks a lot better built than this one. Also huge price difference, they both look like they came out of the same factory, mine cost me $47 US when i purchased including postage and the Tormek adapter was about the same.

  • @Zelda73528

I agree with everyone who said the worksharp system is better. But, I would add that you should be able to use tormek’s low angle/small knife adapter with this. It works with my wicked edge which is just a much more expensive system that uses a clamp like this. It should allow this system to be able to achieve lower angles. Even so worksharp is better.

My problem with these guided sharpeners, at least the ones I've used, is that the stone angle changes when you get nearer the tip until it's eventually not on the edge at all if it's a long blade or a steep drop point. Sometimes it doesn't matter, but it doesn't jive with my OCD that says everything has to be laser perfect and sometimes I feel like it's taking off more steel at the tip than it should be.
Regarding the Lansky in particular, that giant red screw just ruins the whole thing. It's already a pain to get the knife locked in, but then they threw that giant screw in there so you can't use the 17 degree angle on that side at all, but have to flip it in the clamp unless it's a giant knife like an Esee6.

I’m content with my Lansky system, especially after upgrading to diamond stones, but I still use the original stones too sometimes. Well this is certain not what I wanted to see/hear😄 thanks for doing this👍.
Within the first few seconds of seeing you operate this thing I knew it wasn't for me 🤷.
I think your assessment for who this is good for is spot-on👍.
It's not so much that it isn't adequate enough for me, it's more like for the price to performance isn't what i hoped for.
I'm probably just going to make my own simple system that has more structural integrity. I have access to all the tools and materials needed at my uncle's machine shop.
Honestly a no thrills system isn't that difficult to make however there's always those.... "I didn't think of that huh🤔" times.
Plus once I start this project there's no way my uncle is going to standby as a season machinist / engineer and not want to help.
I should probably just make it a challenge with him, that way my simple yet functional system will be done in a few days so and I can start using it right away.
And his tricked out superior titanium anodized modern marvel eighth wonder of the world, will be a 6 month personal crusade to show superior dominance even over the Wicked Edge gen 3 Pro.
By no means am I mocking the Wicked Edge gen 3 Pro it looks like an amazing piece of equipment 👍.
And once he completes his modern marvel fixed sharpening system, I can just throw mine in the garbage, and use his instead 🤷😂. I just need to pad his ego a little bit, for a job well done 😉.
How do I know this is going to work, last year I had to make a custom upper and lower bracket to hold my alternator in my 72 Chevelle.
My bracket was fine and plenty strong enough and perfectly inline and all, totally sufficient👍.
He ended up making a different one that looks like it came out of East Coast Chevelle catalog lol whatever🤷. It's not like I'm taking it to car shows or anyting😂.
Anyways thanks for the review sir✌️.

For the money, I like the Lansky or Gatco sets. But my current set is a franken-set. It's the Lansky angle guide and the stone holder from the old inexpensive DMT angle guide set. I wore out and lost the Lansky stones. I like the DMT stone holder cause you can just snap the 4 inch DMT pocket stones in it. The DMT angle guide is kind of junk, However It took about 14 yrs to wear out the course stone DMT stone, and they are cheap to replace.
When my income got better I got some Shapton water stones, cause I like to freehand, but I still use my franken-set with the extra course DMT to set the angle if the edge is completely rounded or I need to reprofile and know I'm keeping the exact same angle while I do it. Then go to the water stones. I'm a sucker for a nice mirror polish.

I can see this might have an advantage over the Work Sharp in not requiring a 3rd party set of guards to reinforce the sharpening position, and not having the problem of the arm holding the abrasives falling out because it's just a magnet. I have to hold mine with one hand and sharpen with the other.
Seriously, it's worth paying a few bucks to get a set with a 3D printed (or make yourself if so equipped) reinforcement and angle guides. It makes the system perform much better I think. Though it does make you pop the block in and out over and over again, so that's annoying.
    Nothing's perfect.

I find the Lansky is a bit limited sometimes. You can only go as low as 17 degrees. Also small or narrow blades are difficult to get clamped down and sharpen without hitting the clamp with the stone. Even if some fixed angle systems are expensive, they will pay for themselves quickly, especially if you do a lot of sharpening.

I’m guessing Wicked Edge has a patent on stones on both sides. Otherwise, makes no sense to work only one side at a time and flip. Could clearly have the arm and stone on both sides.

      @dougwalby2267 Před rokem

One advantage of doing one side at a time is you need half the number of abrasives compared to a two-sided system, so the initial cost would be lower for the same assortment of grits. I agree with the comment above that the full removal of the screw to rotate is a big negative, but after seeing the flex of the blade holder it became a moot point.

Question mr. Neeves, I wanted to ask this when you recommended the TSPROF. So, do I need one of these if I have a grinder wheel like the Tormek? I have a 10” Wen wet/dry sharpening system off Amazon, which I didn’t know was a Tormek knockoff when I bought it 3 years ago. I bought it to sharpen garden implements like a hoe, axes, shovels, machetes. I wasn’t into knives back then.

It looked like it just needed some touching up because I've been using it for light-medium work (cutting open cardboard boxes etc.) Idk what the angle was on the previous bevel, but I put a 20° edge on there and I started with the 600 > 900 > ceramic > strop and it didn't seem to get screeming hair shaving razor sharp as I hoped lol. For $150.00 the CS system is just too limited and jankety from what I've seen.

I don't see the point of this system. Workshop is a much better system and much cheaper at $50 for the base or $110 or so for the upgraded kit which is the same as this costs. At more money you have better systems too. So this isn't the cheapest option or the best option. So what's the point? It's wobbly, a pain to switch sides(reason wicked edge works is a stone on each side) and it's pricey for what you get.
