I've been TIG Welding for more than 50 years. In fact, it's all I know how to do. I can't Stick-Weld for s***. I don't like Wire-Welding of any kind ... Simply put, "I don't like sparks". TIG is clean, quiet and versatile. That said, this channel is GOLD and is the ONLY welding channel I watch. "Why" you say? ... here, I'm reminded of things I actually knew from experience, as well as the occasional "I could have had a V8" moment ... referring to "duh" ... and the ODNT thing.

I'm wanting to build my own custom exhaust, I don't want to use mig, I sure as hell ain't using stick so think I'm going to have to bite the proverbial bullet and start practicing tig welding lol
Took me about 5 months of welding in HS welding class and also showing up early every day during lunch to be good enough to get a job doing it. The first thing my teacher had me do with each weld process was scribe lines on 5"x5" flat plate and run just the torch no filler over them till they were all a consistent width. This got the whole class good at controlling heat with the pedal before ever using filler.

Dusty once again, I'm humbled by your honest approach to your channel. Most people would tell very little and say "Sign up to my online lessons to learn how to tig" Your down to roots approach helps us part time/ hobby welders so much. I often have to tig weld at work in a maintenance role but I also bought an old dc tig to use at home, partially to get some torch hours under my belt so I can do nicer welds at work. And so I can fabricate nicer welds working on my own stuff. I appreciate your channel and the way you do it.
Wow, the most informative video on TIG I've ever watched. Finally someone with a clean and clear statement about TIG welding. This is the most honest presentation I've watched to date after a couple of years plus watching TIG videos.
I really like your teaching and your videos. As a hobby welder with a transformer AC/DC TIG and stick machine, struggling with the looks of the work and the torch after just a short run, I am finally realizing that I must practice long and hard on many coupons before I do my next repair job, or try to be creative for myself. Practice is everything.

I will never be embarrassed by my big clunky no advance feature transformer machine. It's been a hard worker for over 30 years and I expect it to keep going another 30. I'm not as good as it is. And features won't make me a better welder. They just become a crutch and excuse when things go wrong.

I am learning TIG welding, but as someone who has some experience teaching (college English, art and jewelry making, musical instrument instruction), your approach to teaching (pedagogy) is right on. Learn skills, but learn what they mean and why they mean what they mean - content becomes meaningless without context. For a student, that can make the difference between someone who gets to a certain place and hits a wall versus the individual who finds their own feet and climbs to the next level. I am definitely interested to check out your course.

Yeah, discovered that the hard way 😏. One bottle of argon later found my collet body was loose. Been paying more attention as to the shape of my torch and things have been going a lot better 😊. In all that I also found that having 3 or 4 electrodes preground is a big help too 🤣.

I grind the whole pack and keep it on the weld table next to me because stopping to grind tungsten is a huge buzzkill.
My one tip would be don't let people know you weld at home!!!!

I started in around 2000 with a three phase miller and would have a scrap piece to ball my tungsten and now use a primeweld 225x and can weld anything with it but the younger generation needs help to get to a good level of understanding and he does a decent job so stop cutting others down and judge yourself on what you’re lacking and not bringing to the table
Should I get MIG or TIG?
I've had my stick welding machine for a month now. I am very confident with it now. It's just that I work with thin material 90% of the time and I'd need to get another machine for this purpose.
Until now the only two projects I made are a bike ramp and a metal toy trolly. For my applications, TIG and MIG are much better suited than stick welding. The reason why I'm leaning more towards TIG is because I can weld aluminum and stainless with it, and jobs tend to be much better paying than MIG.
Another reason is that since I am new to welding, I don't really want to get used to the ease of MIG welding in this early of a stage in my career (I know I'm exaggerating a bit here). I want to get used to the complexity and control of TIG from an early stage so I'm better off in the long run.
Personal opinion: the camera cuts are super annoying, rather you have the still front facing camera for the whole time instead of a weird, looks like you're talking to someone else angle. Saves on set up and editing too.
i like the framing of these videos, the set is great with the change in lighting.. and the cuts to your "internal monologue" or whatever you consider it are hilarious

People that leave negative comments obviously don’t give credit to people trying to learn, I’ve been welding for over 15 years and if you are the typical nerd dissing him move on and quit being jealous of what he’s doing because it’s obvious you are not
I started off with gas welding, so I found tig far far easier then stick or mig. but it is still a brute force weld, not very pretty but solid and reliable. Advantage of that you learn all about torch set up, and keeping my tungsten ultra sharp hearkens back to my enjoyment of sharpening a pencil to the point it was sharper than a hypodermic needle!

I have been watching your videos for about 1 and half years and still have not picked up a torch. Im going to change that. I picked up an AHP 203xi and will be practicing what I have learned from your videos and what I want to weld is not and easy starting point. I and getting into my motorcycle building and need to weld on the frame and tig welding looks awesome. I cant wait... all Im waiting on is my argon to come in. Wish me luck.
I love my old transformer miller. Also if you weld aluminum with thoriated tungsten on a transformer machine it doesnt deform like a pure tungsten would.
also a good fact of tip for pipe the tig tourch is melting the matal to getter with no filler only use filler gaps
Hands down best tip is if stick or mig will truly not work hire a tig welder. Also I have a Lincoln tig torch and foot pedal for sale!
Is your class strictly for aluminum or does it carry over to steel and stainless? I have a very basic idea but need to develop better habits to make better welds
Ugh I so need to get my shielding gas. Been doing mig and finally bought a primeweld 225 tig 18 months ago. Only took it out of the box to make sure it turned on and put it back. Funny how life gets in the way of what you want to do

Another great analogy would be a guy buys a brand new sports car and thinks he's going to kick ass on a road racetrack. As someone who spent a lot of time and money learning how to drive on a racetrack, i can almost guarantee dude with the brand new corvette and an inflated ego will almost always end up in a tire barrier (or worse) on their first track weekend. Even drivers who know what they're doing are not immune to the curse of complacency. The guy who taught me track driving was killed in a crash on the same track he taught me back in 2017.
A while back a friend loaned me his $1200 multiprocess (yeah...) Lincoln TIG and a bottle of argon i'm still feeling in my back from loading into my truck, and I agree it's definitely not easy. I watched a ton of videos and still had issues. The biggest of which was one of the most elementary of concepts... electrode distance. For some reason i had it in my head that farther was colder. Once i got back on track, i was able to make some not-horrible welds. I'd love to spend some time with a TIG that had high frequency start. The machine only had lift-start and while i got pretty decent at it, i got tired of resharpening my tungsten pretty quick.

Learn the basics Acetylene and Stick welding, and Tig and Mig welding will be easy. Just a suggestion
I think when you’re learning to weld, save your money on the flashy add-ons, and spend that money on more Argon and practice metal.
I was not prepared for how much argon it takes.
A TIG torch is just a handheld arc furnace. Any impurities will rise to the surface as slag. No need to waste time/argon for clean welds if you aren't doing sanitary or out-of-position welding.
I kept having dirty tungsten when welding aluminum, then I increased the post flow to 8 seconds, and used smaller cup so I can get by with a lower gas flow, and the dirty tungsten problem went away.
I'm sure you're too busy to answer but I'll try asking and hope I'm wrong.
Will your course start off by suggesting good quality but cheaper equip. you mentioned in this video ?? I mean like Links to products so that I might have everything I'll need to take the class in the 1st place ??

Any chance of doing a video on lift arc/ start tig welding? Just tips on how to tack ect. Got my first tig welder and chose this because it was cheap, will be upgrading to a HF down the track, thanks mate!
Just barely scratch the metal to start it or touch it down then rock it back on the cup. I have to do this even with HF start sometimes if my ground isn't perfect.
Interesting, I'm looking at a Lincoln 250/250 tig, mainly for stick welding, but having the ability to tig would be nice.
Hey dusty best advice I've seen on here for a long time . Love the golf analogy.. as a biker that is the epitome of all the gear and no idea.
I bought a German made set up about 3 year ago with intentions of using more than mig . Boy is it an eye opener however as a lot say practice works , I'm still at the base level but it's fun trying to get all the things coordinated at the same time . 1st few attempts came out pretty good flat straight runs. I've found cleaning can be an issue sometimes however it's a learning curve . Thanks for the advice .

I hate watching TV commercials because they don't "flow".
They don't get 2 seconds without a change of camera angle. Often less that 1/2 second throughput the 30 second commercial.
It's extremely distracting to see so many unnecessary camera movements.
Your content and knowledge is better than anything out there but I like the older videos with one camera and a fluid message like being in a classroom watching and listening. I'm seeing 1/2 to 3 second clips through the entire video. I don't like being negative but I've seen others make similar comments in the past.
Is it just the particles in air that contaminate and burn your tungsten

I’ve done a fair amount of stick welding on tractor s and mig around the shop. Brazing and even jewelry repairs ! I’m fascinated with tig and I have a lot of drag bikes ( mini drag 200-300cc) and I really wanna learn to do stainless tubing for exhaust! Exhaust tuning is where you get some extra horse power and makes some really sick engines , max flo thru big valve head !
got myself a “1st Welder” 😂 cheapo TINY little stick-welder unit … I’m gonna get good with E6013 before I upgrade to Tungston. 💜👍

Actually, I started TIG when I was 70. I could stick weld a bit and frankly I usually pick up most skills quick enough. TIG didn't come easy for me and everything he says is spot on. Patience, practice, and keep watching and listening to the the wisdom learned by others. Well, except perhaps for the 20 minutes thing, probably ain't going to happen.

If assembly of the torch is so important, why did you F-up the hex head with a pair of pliers? Use an open in wrench.
10:13 I laughed hard at this point. I am tattoo artist learning to tig weld. I've always used similar comparison when someone asked me how to learn tattoo. "Don't buy expensive machine because it's like getting driving licence and starting with ferrari. You surely are allowed to drive one, but you'll probably crash soon since you can't drive yet. Learn how basic machine works first and then upgrade if you feel like it".

Hey guy, I have a miller syncrowave 180 tig/stick welder,when I got the machine I noticed that it had a 20 second shutoff for the gas,is there a tig handle with a shutoff valve on it the also use the foot pedal,any help would be appreciated

ok, if my weld looks goog from bouth sides, but thungsteng is sharp no mater i have done is just stay shap, does i am geting anything wrong?
I think it would take me quite a lot of practice to get proficient enough for aircraft structure welding, and to be assured of 100% safe welds. Can't afford a weld failure which could result in structural failure and possibly a fatal crash.

The only thing I disagree with everything you said is about the helmet. I bough an expensive helmet, my eyes deserve it. The amount of stress your head and eyes get with cheap helmets is not worth it, save and buy a good helmet.
Need to avoid the fumes, too.

well, if your temp is correct, you don't need that much filler rod, you shouldn't have to grind back to get a flat surface

I have started with a regular basic helmet (~70 $), but i never could get it working perfectly .. vision was not that good (E-hand, MIG MAG, TIG). Than I ve decided to spent money for very good optrel (~300 $) ... and that was an incredible upgrade - vision of welding process is perfect and the quality of my welds increased so much. So I agree .. some stuff are fancy but does not help - but others like a very good vision are a game changer. greetings from germany

I started welding for the first time this year. I managed to knock out Stick in a few weeks. Then I moved on to TIG. I'm far from an expert and never will be, but I will say this:
This man is spot on. the fundamentals of stick carried over to TIG. If you don't make sure the little things are done, it doesn't matter what you have. You could base metal so clean it's a mirror, but if your setup isn't right (heat, good rods/filler metal, clean stinger contacts/clean torch, so on) you're only gonna get bad results. GIGO. Garbage in, garbage out.
I love my new found talent because it's the first time in my life I genuinely understand something I'm doing. That weld isn't picky. It doesn't care who you are and it doesn't like the next guy any more than you or any less. So when you screw up a weld don't immediately blame the equipment. First point to yourself and ask what YOU didn't do right. I've laid plenty of beads at this point and I've yet to lay a bad one that was anythings fault other than my own.

Why do you still ball your tungsten?
Personally I'd start out with a Mig welder with the bottle of 75/25 and learn how to use it first and then move on to TIG later. If you're just starting out.
If you want to learn fast you will want to start with the more manual processes first. Mig can teach bad habits that are hard to forget if you have the machine set up wrong to compensate. In school I started with 7018 stick, then did mig, then aluminum tig.

If I am going to be welding a lot of aluminum where speed is of upmost importance (while still getting a solid weld), is it best to just learn MIG with spool instead of TIG?
Just seeing the thumbnail I thought you were going to tell us not to constantly bend the "flexible" torch heads. I say this because they can and will break. The ones iv seen break and fall apart are corregated copper tubing. Copper work hardens like aluminum does and will crack if you bend it one to many times. Cheaper torches that come with the cheaper welders will break a lot faster.

Hi. When you talking about basic machine, you always show a fancy machine on the screen.
Im a old school machinist. I use Esab DTA 200. ac/dc. That is Basic Tig welder. Could you be comfortable with that old welder? I dont weld so much anymore so i do exercise weldig one hour before i do the work welding. Think that is a good advice to all that dont weld everyday.

I'm currently working to learn stainless butt joint. I am running a pedal set to 98 Amps. 1.2 mm material set in a purge block no filler. Trying to learn this for an employment test.
My problem is by the time I get full penatration, my bead looks too hot on the top side. The backside looks good nice and silver even penatration. But like I said top is dark with small areas of pink coloring and some matte grey areas. How can I get good penatration without getting it too hot on top?? Orrrr is this a gas issue??
1.2mm is about 0.047”. If you go by the “rule” of 1 amp per 0.001” that should put you at 47 amps. Maybe try lowering the amperage… unless all the settings are set for you for this test.
Are you using a gas lens? What cup size?
@@VictorMPR yes a gas lens and using an 8 cup. I want to buy some jumbo lenses and cups on payday. I'm not sure if they set the settings for me or not. I do know after initial arc start I come about halfway off the pedal. (I'm still trying to get used to this though.) I will try lowering my amps. I believe the actual test will be on .065 mm material. I'm using the only stuff the school has to practice. 🤷♀️
I find that 15% to 20% less than the "rule" of 1 amp per 0.001" works better for Stainless. But lowering the amps doesn't always help. It can slow things down & you end up putting more heat into the work because the pass takes longer. Better to just get a move on! (Easier said than done though...)
Fupa 12, flow at about 30-35 cfh and crank your amperage up higher than needed so you get full penetration then keep it at all you need and go as fast as you can to get out before the oxidation sets in
@@MidEngineering yeah I have adjusted amps up and down. Speed up and down. I've tried filler to cool the puddle. No filler. Tiny gap. No gap. High cfh low and mid cfh. Just so many combos it could be lol! 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️I'll be going in tomorrow to work on it some.
