  • In this episode of 'This Is Why' Zach Conover talks about the effects of Secular Humanism. "If the material world is all there is human beings have nothing outside of themselves to ground their worth and dignity". Who determines worth? Is it the majority? History at the minimum exposes this error.

First off this video didn’t cover what secular humanism is. It’s a critique on current abortion legislation that was since been overruled. Secular Humanism isn’t a religion, it’s a movement that started in the 1600’s that aimed to revitalize the humanities(art, poetry, ethics, etc) and aimed for it to be outside the rule of religious dogma because back then religion was heavy engrained in politics. This is what happens when you think you know everything cause you read only one book. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Thank you for saying that. I believe that if he is against abortion he should be talking about that, why is he assuming that every secular humanist isn't prolife and is proabortion? He is just generalizing and mixing topics in my opinion, expresing discomfort to something that isn't actually the issue he wanted to express. I was looking for secular humanism videos for a presentation and end up watching this that had nothing to do with it🤣

Zach, you either misunderstand secular humanism (which is not, despite your choice of language, a religion) or choose to mischaracterize it. Secular humanists do not claim that man is the measure of all things - indeed, humanism encourages humility in our animal species. Nor does SH teach that the universe is closed - in stark contrast to the pre-Galilean church's view. You're right, though, in observing that reason and science are valued by SH - but aren't these things also valued by many religious thinkers?
And, despite your claim that Christians are pro-life, I've talked with many self-described Christians who are pro-death penalty. Are they just posing as Christian?

"Secular humanists do not claim that man is the measure of all things - indeed, humanism encourages humility in our animal species."
You may be using two different meanings of "man is the measure of all things". I would agree with you that secular humanism rejects the claim--historically a religious one--that man has dominion over other animals. However, I think Zach's use of the term is more in line with the idea that secular humanism makes humans, not God, the moral arbiters.
"And, despite your claim that Christians are pro-life, I've talked with many self-described Christians who are pro-death penalty. Are they just posing as Christian?"
I do believe that many self-described, pro-life Christians are hypocrites. That being said, I think it can be a logically consistent view to support the killing of heinous criminals while opposing killing a fetus that has never intentionally harmed someone. (Or an embryo, or a zygote, for those that want to make scientifically indefensible personhood claims.)

Also, who is sent 'strong delusion' and why is Satan OWED anything post exile? And did Eve ever KNOW she was choosing for her yet to be born offspring, to fundamentally alter their natures, before birth, and before conscious choice, too?
Also, how do you view the marriages in Numbers 31, at the end, of captive Canaanite women - as consensual, or otherwise? And what else, should we make of them?
And which Christology and soteriology, and interpretation, has been shared, and which is now predominant, also?

I am all for stopping abortion from being a sought after solution to being in the position of an unplanned or insurmountable event. The issue is the lack of consistent morality in trying to end abortion without addressing the needs of the born. The Christian populous in America have done very little in changing the existence of children going hungry, being abused by adults (family, acquaintances, or stranger), and being controlled to the bias of the parent’s values. Help the children and make it possible for these mothers to properly care for their children up through adulthood, then abortion can end. Stop holding back the resources of our society by defending their being hoarded by the current system.
