If you decide to dive/snorkel/swim in an area with a known seal or sea lion colony, you’re basically playing Russian Roulette. Why anyone would choose to take that kind of risk is beyond me.

I have dived with seals in the Neptune Islands, South Australia, famous for white shark cage diving and didn’t feel scared or worried. Of course I was aware that sharks are in the area however you are always more alert for unusual signs. Montague Island off the east coast of Australia is a very popular diving and snorkelling spot and home to Aussie and NZ fur seals. There has never been a shark attack there. Millions dive, surf, swim, snorkel etc each year in Australia and around the world with only very few attacks. It is very rare to be attacked and killed by a shark and being scared to go into the water because a shark may or may not attack you is just scare mongering. If you grow up near the ocean especially in Australia you respect and learn to deal with it.
Yes but diving during pupping season, which is when they were, increases the risk significantly. Also GWS numbers are increasing since we've stopped culling seals in 1983 @@sinistra328

When my brothers, myself and our mates were teenagers we used to go for moonlight surfing sessions at around 3:30 to 4am in the morning around the Gold Coast, Australia. Looking back on those days, I can't believe what a foolhardy activity that was, and that we all got away unscathed.
Yeah I dunno how you guys do it, youve got some land based nightmares too between the snakes and the bugs. My biggest worry while Im in the woods is a momma black bear or a pack of wolves so Im relatively safe but damn, being in the water Down Under is far too scary for me.
Yes, but those Orcas aren’t necessarily GW shark hunters. More like the shark buggared off because the Orcas are bigger than it & present competition. As far as I’m concerned, diving anywhere with seals, you become as much in danger as them. More in fact because they can swim & hold their breath. Humans are slow and easy to drown. The only thing we have over animals is a brain. Too bad a shark doesn’t give a poop what your IQ is 🤷♀️

Yeah I was eleven when I saw jaws and was a keen learner surfer definitely freaked me out lookin around nervously when surfin bout after awhile all settled down I've seen a few sharks when surfin but fortunately not big ones but enough for you to head in to the beach quietly !!!
A lot of divers are deluded and think sharks aren't actually eating machines. Just look at the channel 'dive talk' those guys will say that channels like this are just "fear mongering" the public against sharks! Lol.

I’m from Perth Western Australia and it must have been about 15 years ago when an American Diver was taken at North Point Rottnest Island, a beautiful island we have 11 miles off the coast. North Point is just off Parakeet Bay, a place I’ve dived and reef scoured all my life. He was apparently only in the water for about 5 minutes when half his body came to the surface. My misses’s sister was the duty nurse at the island for that week and said when they brought him in she started vomiting and she’d seen horrific car crashes but the shark in one bite had taken his left arm, heart, lungs and most of his ribs and spine. I think it was around 16 to 17 feet, an absolute monster. Most people reckon that they are random attacks but it’s strange that in about 5 years around 10 to 12 people went in the same areas. Starting with a guy at Grace town on the way north to Cottesloe in Perth when Ken Crew was taken, about 5 people ended up taken around Gracetown over half a dozen years, one at Left Handers, 3 around Cottesloe and the Rottnest island one which is only 11 miles off Cott. They say that so not to scare anyone but they know where they got a feed before. I saw a huge one while surfing Gracetown about 47 to 48 years ago. Just a massive fin.

I worked in South Africa for about 6 months and worked in Kenya for a year or so. Fremantle is a nice place. I can’t remember any attacks there but I swim there occasionally. I want to go back to Johannesburg for a holiday. I lived at Brumer Lake and worked at Germiston when there for Smith capital equipment building a drilling rig to take to Kenya
Sharks dont make mistakes . They know exactly what you are whether on a board or swimming . If its hungry and your out in 6 feet or more of water they know your an easy meal and often spy hop before attacking from under or behind . Never is a mistaken identity. Thats proven to be complete BS.
When you hear of all the wildlife an attack attracts, it’s a little freaky. When Simon Nellist was bitten in half, a bunch of seagulls were circling the area trying to get scraps before the shark came and took him away.
Agreed. It really makes you aware of the food chain & opportunistic circle of life. It’s also likely that the sea birds of Sidney know the sound of a GW breaching during a feeding event & it’s like ringing a dinner bell.
I remember a seal slowly swimming past my family and I about 25 feet away in a known great white area and instinctively I got everybody out the water and moved to another part of the beach. We didn't go back in the past our calves to be safe 💯 I wish more people protected their families like this we wouldn't see so many stories 😔
First, why would you be in great white infested waters? Second, moving from one area to another isn't going to help cause you do realize the sharks are in the ocean everywhere right? Third, sharks can get in water up to ankle deep let alone calf deep so you still aren't fully shark protected in calf deep water.
I live at the beach too in so cal and I've felt something bump my leg in thigh deep water next to the pier. If a seal came onto the beach, I'd be scared. You think bc you see surfers the waters are safe. Not true
As any fan of this channel knows, Hal is one of the best narrators on this platform, and THE best amongst comparable channels. But, for me, one of the most impressive things about watching Hal's videos, is his ability to recall names, dates and events on the fly. I've always assumed that he pre-scripts at least some of his content. But this still doesn't account for his memory of the most obscure details when needed. I suppose that his attention to,and easy recall of, the relevant details speaks to his genuine passion for the subject. And that's just one more of the many things that makes Sharks Happen my favorite channel on all of CZcams, bar none! Keep on keeping on, Hal!
Like everything about hal and his sharks happen vids . The only bad thing he does is when he talks about politics or being for trump. Statistically, the risk of putting yourself in danger, are significantly higher walking the streets in major cities, and driving your car on the freeway. I’ve been a scuba diving instructor since 1994 and have kept track of these statistics for years, and the risk we take on land has only increased over the years, while scuba diving in the ocean has basically stayed the same. Too much TV and internet will rot your brain. Pay closer attention to the statistics.

My husband and I are looking to move back down to Florida and get a boat. We lived there for a few years back in the early 2000s and loved boating. I used to get in the water when we would anchor but I told him I don’t think I will anymore.
I was unaware of that attack until i read your post. So I typed the name into Google, searched & had a read. The attack is shocking, disgusting & horrifying....
The following require checking as I'm going off of memory from an article read years ago. I recall Therese was an experienced diver and was excited to take her first dive in a year or so after taking a break during her most recent pregnancy. Her husband was actually piloting the boat and watching their kids and not diving himself(?) Therese was actually diving with an experienced couple: one or more of whom were colleagues - marine biologists, conservationists, neither(?) They noticed she was falling behind and saw her taking long pauses during her descent. Because of this it was presumed she was having difficulties equalizing pressure. Because they were monitoring her progress to catch them up, they witnessed the attack. Cheers. I'll reiterate. Some of the above may be incorrect.

God this story is horrific. Entire family forever scarred by having to witness this yet the shark just goes about his life and never thinks about it ever again. The world is strange.

Many people say, "I wouldn't go into the water if I lived in Australia" in fear of a shark attack. It's fully understandable and for the record (pay close attention to the wording) I'd like to THINK I wouldn't enter the water either. However........ I used to live in Spain, Costa del Sol = Mediterranean. At first I just STARTED tanning on the beach. But eventually, it becomes hard to stay out of the water when you're just sat there, staring at it and on a hot summer's afternoon. Before I knew it, I was in. The same thing happened AGAIN in Miami. I'm on the beach. Next thing I know, I'm swimming around in the water. Admittedly the risk of being attacked by a shark and in both locations is low. However & on both occasions, the risk of being attacked by a shark did cross my mind. It's worth mentioning, Spain, Tarifa, 1986, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, there was a GWS attack on a surfer. So even though the risk is low, one would be very naive to think that there's no way it wouldn't/couldn't happen. But the water is so alluring & you never think it's going to be you. That's the point I'm making. R.I.P the victim
Hey, Hal, I guess you heard that Susan Backlinie passed away at 77, a few days ago. Famous for playing Chrissie Watkins, the first victim in the opening scene of Jaws. It had also turned out to be a feeding attack in the movie but it was not quick, I believe it looked terrifying because the shark seemed to have some fun with the girl, shaking her “like a rag doll”, biting and then letting go for a while… I think that’s a common pattern in some attacks too, I couldn’t tell why sharks do it but it sure makes them look… demonic. Not “bite and wait”, it’s more like a sadistic game with the victim, perhaps just like cats play a little with mice before they eat them. Just a predatory thing? Who knows... The Cartwright attack, quick and ferocious and predatory too, surely resembles the attack on Shirley-Ann Durdin & the one on Simon Nellist, as you said. Perhaps Brazier, Vanda Pierri and L. Constanzo shared a similar fate: very large white sharks attacking quickly, all victims suffered horrific first bites severing legs from torso, I think. All of them fully consumed and nothing was left to recover.
I used to swim in the ocean any chance that I had, and I was insane.😂 I openly admit it. If I’d seen or heard about shark attacks like we do now, I’d have been so much more careful. I’ve only ever seen 1 shark when I was snorkeling with a friend, and she got so freaked out and pushed me into the reef where I got cut up and was bleeding. So I inadvertently chummed the sharks thanks to my idiotic friend. 😂 But now I’m staying in the pools and lakes (with no gators or sharks).
I just don't get it? They weren't tourist, neither novice scuba divers, they must've known (husband and wife) that number one: those are waters which great white sharks (tigers, bulls, etc.) inhabit, hell I'm an American living in Florida, thousands of miles away and I know that! Two: great white sharks predate upon seals and therefore it's not safe to frolic around them?! Many years have passed now, but it's tragic all the same, that family lost a wife and mom, and she, her life (in a horrible way, no less) and family, much too soon. RIP _Edited for typo._
Hal, you should read some of the stories in some of the old Sydney Herald and other Australian newspapers from the 20s, 30s, and 40s. I believe there are some shark attack mentionings in these that may or may not be in the files. Back then surfers used to do a collection for fisherman that caught big man-eaters (I mean they didn't know a blue shark that was swimming around after a fatal attack was probably attracted to the sounds, not the responsible shark, but to them back then....a blue shark was a man eater) and one guy that caught a nice sized tiger shark received a few hundred pounds for it. One year, 9 loyalty island natives armed with knives and marlin spears swam out into the water at Coogee to do battle with man eating sharks that were seen in the waters. 80,000 people were on the beaches that day to watch the men and sharks do battle.....but of course, when they swam out to the drum lines that were set for them, there were no sharks on the lines.
Jaws left a huge mark on many of us 70s/80s kids. I was petrified even when on the 'jaws ride' in florida 😂. I have no desire to even dip a toe in the ocean or a lake.
I've always agreed with you, Hal, regarding the "mistaken identity theory." Those sharks are intelligent and know the difference between pinniped and human. It's almost a guarantee that all Great Whites have encountered people, at some point in their development.
Why can’t someone make a clear surf board? Maybe that would stop shark attacks on surfers and they could maybe see sharks coming underneath. Just a thought …
@OkieDokie680: Did you see the footage of a guy in a plexiglass box who got in it to see what a GW shark would do?? (He was an experienced diver and did it for a living). It attacked the box and he barely got away with his life. He did not go back in the ocean for a year during Covid. When he decided to go back in, he got on the boat to travel out to the dive site with friends and took a stroke. Now he can no longer dive.
Tragic. Always an odds game when enjoying shark inhabited waters. I wish I had the gumption to enjoy the ocean beauty fully immersed in it. But I cant lol Hope her family found some peace.

I was wondering if you had heard of Orange Beach and Alabama is considered the shark bite capital of the world little sharks, but lots of bites luckily very few deaths. +2 teenagers really in a 9 foot great white shark from the beach and that is on CZcams. I was on holiday in western Oz and wanted to go over to a seal colony off the coast : I asked tourist information how I could get over there and they told me there weren’t any regular boats but I could swim because it wasn’t very far 😂😂😂 . When I said it was to see sharks they told me there not around here 😂😂
A tragedy, yes, but should a mother of 4 young children and a baby scuba dive in great white feeding territory? I was in several dive clubs in Florida and even helped found a new one, and I don't begrudge a mother her fun...but diving could temporarily wait until children are raised a bit more.
Great videos! Just 5 days earlier, John Ford, who was on his honeymoon, was killed in Byron Bay, north of Sydney. As the 16 to 18 foot shark approached, John pushed his wife Debbie out of the way and was bitten in the torso. Later, others hooked the shark which dragged the boat over a mile, before spitting out John's torso, facemask and part of his wetsuit. In an interview from 2014, Debbie said that she still dives.

Years ago there was a guy that used to come and surf at dungeons near Hout Bay in South Africa with us and on the back of his wetsuit was written "I am not a seal" he was never attacked by a shark and that area is shark land lol 😂
The "easy meal in desperate times" hypothesis is one that rings true for me. There are obviously other neurological states and factors that also lead to attacks on humans, but that one seems like it could be the most common impetus. If they could somehow track tagged sharks' hunting success/failures, they might be able to get data that supports or refutes that hypothesis, but I'm not sure how that would be possible.
I heard an interesting comment about the attack on Heather Boswell. One of the commentators theorised that when Heather was trying to swim back to the ship and the boat crew were coming along side of her, the shark may have been getting itself between the boat and Heather in a competitive feeding behaviour. So it may have been trying to cut off what it saw as the boat being some sort of competition for what it saw as its food. I thought that the comment had some merit as we see animals competing all the time for their food. No disrespect to Heather intended.
I once was diving and spearfishing off the California coast in a kelp field and a seal came around so i feed it a couple fish and it stayed near me even allowing me to touch it, however when i left the kelp field and swam over open sand i looked back and it was just inside the edge of the field watching me. Longest swim back to the boat as i was very worried.
I always have asked myself how sharks know when a human is watching them or nor, I have watched in videos that they identify this, but how do they know where our eyes are if even we are not acuatic animals and maybe a lot of these sharks never saw a human being, What do you think Hal, have you ever heard any theory about that?
This happened to a guy in Mexico. Jumped in with a hooka I think and boom. If you're getting in the water, chill in the boat for a little bit. Slide in don't fall off the side like all these scuba guys do. You scare the fish you want to see and attract the tax collector. I will never forget seeing this guy bone white on the deck with one leg. Really crazy.

Orcas do hunt GWs, it’s documented, they will target the livers and they fight over territory.

I lived in Fremantle. 50 years ago. Didn't notice the publicity. Now. Live in Johannesburg. Jeffrey's bay has a lot of sharks. So does Cape Town.

When I see that clip of the seal on the surfboard I always imagine it thinking, "I hope a shark doesn't mistake me for a surfer."

When you hear of all the wildlife an attack attracts, it’s a little freaky. When Simon Nellist was bitten in half, a bunch of seagulls were circling the area trying to get scraps before the shark came and took him away.
Agreed. It really makes you aware of the food chain & opportunistic circle of life. It’s also likely that the sea birds of Sidney know the sound of a GW breaching during a feeding event & it’s like ringing a dinner bell.
I grew up fishing on the ocean. That's why I only swim in lakes, rivers or pools now. I've seen what swims silently below.
Don't forget about crocs and gators.
I remember a seal slowly swimming past my family and I about 25 feet away in a known great white area and instinctively I got everybody out the water and moved to another part of the beach. We didn't go back in the past our calves to be safe 💯 I wish more people protected their families like this we wouldn't see so many stories 😔
First, why would you be in great white infested waters? Second, moving from one area to another isn't going to help cause you do realize the sharks are in the ocean everywhere right? Third, sharks can get in water up to ankle deep let alone calf deep so you still aren't fully shark protected in calf deep water.

I live at the beach too in so cal and I've felt something bump my leg in thigh deep water next to the pier. If a seal came onto the beach, I'd be scared. You think bc you see surfers the waters are safe. Not true

As any fan of this channel knows, Hal is one of the best narrators on this platform, and THE best amongst comparable channels. But, for me, one of the most impressive things about watching Hal's videos, is his ability to recall names, dates and events on the fly. I've always assumed that he pre-scripts at least some of his content. But this still doesn't account for his memory of the most obscure details when needed. I suppose that his attention to,and easy recall of, the relevant details speaks to his genuine passion for the subject. And that's just one more of the many things that makes Sharks Happen my favorite channel on all of CZcams, bar none!

I never swam in the ocean probably only went knee deep in uk , the main reason was the film Jaws. I was done completely.
Even on the Isle of Wight or Littlehampton I still keep my eyes out and don't go too deep.

Statistically, the risk of putting yourself in danger, are significantly higher walking the streets in major cities, and driving your car on the freeway. I’ve been a scuba diving instructor since 1994 and have kept track of these statistics for years, and the risk we take on land has only increased over the years, while scuba diving in the ocean has basically stayed the same. Too much TV and internet will rot your brain. Pay closer attention to the statistics.

Getting shot in a major city happens approximately 300 times each year. Getting eaten alive in the ocean takes place once every 30+ years.
My husband and I are looking to move back down to Florida and get a boat. We lived there for a few years back in the early 2000s and loved boating. I used to get in the water when we would anchor but I told him I don’t think I will anymore.

The following require checking as I'm going off of memory from an article read years ago.
I recall Therese was an experienced diver and was excited to take her first dive in a year or so after taking a break during her most recent pregnancy. Her husband was actually piloting the boat and watching their kids and not diving himself(?) Therese was actually diving with an experienced couple: one or more of whom were colleagues - marine biologists, conservationists, neither(?) They noticed she was falling behind and saw her taking long pauses during her descent. Because of this it was presumed she was having difficulties equalizing pressure. Because they were monitoring her progress to catch them up, they witnessed the attack. Cheers.

God this story is horrific. Entire family forever scarred by having to witness this yet the shark just goes about his life and never thinks about it ever again. The world is strange.
You don't know. In idle moments the shark might enjoy recollecting that delicious meal he had.
When you really think about it.. this world is bizarre.... we arent even really sure what we are (evolved monkeys? dont think so).. and we are on this planet with all these different types of creatures.. have you ever really realized how crazy it is

Many people say, "I wouldn't go into the water if I lived in Australia" in fear of a shark attack. It's fully understandable and for the record (pay close attention to the wording) I'd like to THINK I wouldn't enter the water either. However........
I used to live in Spain, Costa del Sol = Mediterranean. At first I just STARTED tanning on the beach. But eventually, it becomes hard to stay out of the water when you're just sat there, staring at it and on a hot summer's afternoon. Before I knew it, I was in. The same thing happened AGAIN in Miami. I'm on the beach. Next thing I know, I'm swimming around in the water.
Admittedly the risk of being attacked by a shark and in both locations is low. However & on both occasions, the risk of being attacked by a shark did cross my mind. It's worth mentioning, Spain, Tarifa, 1986, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, there was a GWS attack on a surfer. So even though the risk is low, one would be very naive to think that there's no way it wouldn't/couldn't happen.
But the water is so alluring & you never think it's going to be you. That's the point I'm making.

Hey, Hal, I guess you heard that Susan Backlinie passed away at 77, a few days ago. Famous for playing Chrissie Watkins, the first victim in the opening scene of Jaws. It had also turned out to be a feeding attack in the movie but it was not quick, I believe it looked terrifying because the shark seemed to have some fun with the girl, shaking her “like a rag doll”, biting and then letting go for a while… I think that’s a common pattern in some attacks too, I couldn’t tell why sharks do it but it sure makes them look… demonic. Not “bite and wait”, it’s more like a sadistic game with the victim, perhaps just like cats play a little with mice before they eat them. Just a predatory thing? Who knows...
The Cartwright attack, quick and ferocious and predatory too, surely resembles the attack on Shirley-Ann Durdin & the one on Simon Nellist, as you said. Perhaps Brazier, Vanda Pierri and L. Constanzo shared a similar fate: very large white sharks attacking quickly, all victims suffered horrific first bites severing legs from torso, I think. All of them fully consumed and nothing was left to recover.
I used to swim in the ocean any chance that I had, and I was insane.😂 I openly admit it. If I’d seen or heard about shark attacks like we do now, I’d have been so much more careful. I’ve only ever seen 1 shark when I was snorkeling with a friend, and she got so freaked out and pushed me into the reef where I got cut up and was bleeding. So I inadvertently chummed the sharks thanks to my idiotic friend. 😂 But now I’m staying in the pools and lakes (with no gators or sharks).

I just don't get it? They weren't tourist, neither novice scuba divers, they must've known (husband and wife) that number one: those are waters which great white sharks (tigers, bulls, etc.) inhabit, hell I'm an American living in Florida, thousands of miles away and I know that! Two: great white sharks predate upon seals and therefore it's not safe to frolic around them?! Many years have passed now, but it's tragic all the same, that family lost a wife and mom, and she, her life (in a horrible way, no less) and family, much too soon. RIP

Hal, you should read some of the stories in some of the old Sydney Herald and other Australian newspapers from the 20s, 30s, and 40s. I believe there are some shark attack mentionings in these that may or may not be in the files. Back then surfers used to do a collection for fisherman that caught big man-eaters (I mean they didn't know a blue shark that was swimming around after a fatal attack was probably attracted to the sounds, not the responsible shark, but to them back then....a blue shark was a man eater) and one guy that caught a nice sized tiger shark received a few hundred pounds for it.
One year, 9 loyalty island natives armed with knives and marlin spears swam out into the water at Coogee to do battle with man eating sharks that were seen in the waters. 80,000 people were on the beaches that day to watch the men and sharks do battle.....but of course, when they swam out to the drum lines that were set for them, there were no sharks on the lines.

Jaws left a huge mark on many of us 70s/80s kids. I was petrified even when on the 'jaws ride' in florida 😂. I have no desire to even dip a toe in the ocean or a lake.

I've always agreed with you, Hal, regarding the "mistaken identity theory." Those sharks are intelligent and know the difference between pinniped and human. It's almost a guarantee that all Great Whites have encountered people, at some point in their development.
They also have the best eyesight in the sea. Better than most mammals, in fact.

@OkieDokie680: Did you see the footage of a guy in a plexiglass box who got in it to see what a GW shark would do?? (He was an experienced diver and did it for a living). It attacked the box and he barely got away with his life. He did not go back in the ocean for a year during Covid. When he decided to go back in, he got on the boat to travel out to the dive site with friends and took a stroke. Now he can no longer dive.

I was wondering if you had heard of Orange Beach and Alabama is considered the shark bite capital of the world little sharks, but lots of bites luckily very few deaths. +2 teenagers really in a 9 foot great white shark from the beach and that is on CZcams. Do you answer comments?

I was on holiday in western Oz and wanted to go over to a seal colony off the coast : I asked tourist information how I could get over there and they told me there weren’t any regular boats but I could swim because it wasn’t very far 😂😂😂 . When I said it was to see sharks they told me there not around here 😂😂
A tragedy, yes, but should a mother of 4 young children and a baby scuba dive in great white feeding territory? I was in several dive clubs in Florida and even helped found a new one, and I don't begrudge a mother her fun...but diving could temporarily wait until children are raised a bit more.

Great videos! Just 5 days earlier, John Ford, who was on his honeymoon, was killed in Byron Bay, north of Sydney. As the 16 to 18 foot shark approached, John pushed his wife Debbie out of the way and was bitten in the torso. Later, others hooked the shark which dragged the boat over a mile, before spitting out John's torso, facemask and part of his wetsuit. In an interview from 2014, Debbie said that she still dives.

Years ago there was a guy that used to come and surf at dungeons near Hout Bay in South Africa with us and on the back of his wetsuit was written "I am not a seal" he was never attacked by a shark and that area is shark land lol 😂

The "easy meal in desperate times" hypothesis is one that rings true for me. There are obviously other neurological states and factors that also lead to attacks on humans, but that one seems like it could be the most common impetus. If they could somehow track tagged sharks' hunting success/failures, they might be able to get data that supports or refutes that hypothesis, but I'm not sure how that would be possible.
I heard an interesting comment about the attack on Heather Boswell. One of the commentators theorised that when Heather was trying to swim back to the ship and the boat crew were coming along side of her, the shark may have been getting itself between the boat and Heather in a competitive feeding behaviour. So it may have been trying to cut off what it saw as the boat being some sort of competition for what it saw as its food. I thought that the comment had some merit as we see animals competing all the time for their food. No disrespect to Heather intended.

I once was diving and spearfishing off the California coast in a kelp field and a seal came around so i feed it a couple fish and it stayed near me even allowing me to touch it, however when i left the kelp field and swam over open sand i looked back and it was just inside the edge of the field watching me. Longest swim back to the boat as i was very worried.
I always have asked myself how sharks know when a human is watching them or nor, I have watched in videos that they identify this, but how do they know where our eyes are if even we are not acuatic animals and maybe a lot of these sharks never saw a human being, What do you think Hal, have you ever heard any theory about that?

This happened to a guy in Mexico. Jumped in with a hooka I think and boom. If you're getting in the water, chill in the boat for a little bit. Slide in don't fall off the side like all these scuba guys do. You scare the fish you want to see and attract the tax collector. I will never forget seeing this guy bone white on the deck with one leg. Really crazy.
