I always loved Code: Veronica in my own way, but there was also something about it that made it my least favorite "classic-style" RE game. After watching this, I understand why I felt that way about it and why it was always difficult for me to come back to it in comparison to the others, even those of the action trilogy. Still, I love playing the game, especially because of these things:
    - The ability to play as Chris and Claire again, and in the same game, is pretty awesome. I have owned the PS2 version as a kid, so playing this game with classic controls was a big plus for me.
    - You can play as Wesker in the Battle Game, this game's mini-game.
    - The knife is extremely fun to use in this game.
    - Obtaining the rocket launcher in this game (the infinite one) is actually a very difficult challenge and one that I've never been up to doing myself.
    - This game has the dumbest, most dramatic story in the series, and that makes it extremely appealing to me.
Thanks, also, TGB, for staying authentic and playing the original DC release for this video!

I'm sure I will one day :) Learning how to speedrun and master each game is one of the most amazing feelings in gaming to me, and doing that with Code: Veronica will surely be just as awesome, even if it takes insane work.
I've owned the strategy guide for Code: Veronica X since I was little. It was passed down from my father. As a kid, I couldn't beat Code: Veronica despite having no trouble playing RE1 and RE2 (which were also my father's games) and the fact that my dad owned the strategy guide only for C:V sort of created this legend that Code: Veronica was unwinnable or something. It was the Prima guide, and reading the requirements for getting an A rank was like, "Well, I guess that's not happening!" It wouldn't be until my teenagehood that I was able to beat it alone without the guide, but maybe one day I'll be able to get an A rank.

Channel: NES1995 As someone that managed to unlock the rocket launcher for Code: Veronica X, the first and only time in any classic RE game, it was...honestly, pretty underwhelming compared to what I had to do to get it.
Memorizing the majority of puzzles and difficult enemy locations, avoiding zombies and unnecessary encounters as best as I could (Which is kinda easy for zombies since I recall it being really easy to break out of most zombie grabs before losing health, anyways), accumulating as much rare ammo and weapons as I could to the point of using only the knife to kill the Nosferatu-looking monster (Which is somehow doable if you manage to stab it right a certain way), all to get a Rocket Launcher that I only ever used on a few zombies.
I mean, I had some fun with the game, but completion just wasn’t worth it in hindsight.

I think it's no surprise that when Code Veronica came out that reviews for it were talking about "Resident Evil fatigue" that gave so much hype and energy to the RE4 pre-release coverage for not having normal zombies, not having fixed camera angles, etc. It's crazy to think it, but only 5ish years into the IP's lifespan and people were already tiring of it (and now here we are with 7 people wanting to go back to basics). IDK how many of the watchers here can remember those early days, but I certainly do.
One thing you didn't mention though - the knife is INSANELY good in this game! Rather than striking an enemy one time per swing, it hits for as long as the hitbox is hitting an enemy's hurtbox - so you can score several hits at once especially on downed enemies, making this the first time the knife wasn't a total joke best left in the item box. It also has that cool secret instant kill on Nosferatu as well.

    • @CappnRob
      @CappnRob Před 5 lety +19

I wouldn't say Code V was shitty, just very.... run of the mill. The formula got stale because new things weren't really being added to it here, and mind you Capcom WAS farting these games out hella fast in those days. After Code V we got the Big Nintendo deal where not only did we get REmake but also Gamecube ports of RE2, 3, and Code VX, as well as Zero a year later. On the PS2 side of things we got the Outbreak games (which were good but janky and ahead of their time tbh) and Dead Aim, granted that game wasn't traditional RE, it was the third in the Guncon games. Still, the point remains that an RE that rests on its laurels will magnify the faults it has, and an oversaturation of ports will devalue people's respect of them.

    • @CappnRob
      @CappnRob Před 5 lety +6

Saying Code V wasn't good is kind of hyperbolic. It wasn't great, but it was not a -bad- game. Zero was better, and its inventory system I thought was fine - many people thought it an improvement over the Item Box. Outbreak's online was ahead of its time, but it did work if you were one of the only people with broadband in 2003. Dead Aim... yeah that one was kinda shit lmao

If you go from Nemesis to Veronica, it seems like kind of a step back. Nemesis had "fight or flight" choices when it came to Nemesis. But Veronica was just linear and kind of boring. The gunpowder was removed, so how you mixed those was another choice taken out. While there's 2 characters to play as, you don't choose like in RE1 or 2. If anything, it's a bit worse. Sure, 3 didn't let you choose either but you got to play as Carlos for a bit when Jill got infected. Whereas Chris' first section is just retreading old ground. So 3's character changed move the plot forward whereas Veronica just had you play as Chris to catch up to Claire, which is boring. Wesker was brought back. I love the character and his voice but it's kind of a "Wait, what?" moment if you think about it too much. Wesker injected himself with some experimental serum, to revive him after death and it also gave him super powers. You'd think that would change the direction of the series. Here's something that brings people back to life, super powered and no longer mindless zombies. Why isn't Umbrella trying to recreate that? Ok, the PR from RE2 pretty much kills the company but why isn't this Wesker's plan to find a way to recreate that serum and make mad money off of it? We keep going back to zombies or zombie like creatures. I'm probably just overthinking this.

This is mostly unrelated to the video but I find it kind of interesting how there are a lot of classic game series/formats that at the time people started to get fatigued by but now they're so scarce and we've been without them for so long that they're craving it. Classic Resident Evil, Tony Hawk's is another that comes to mind. To a lesser extent I feel like this is true for classic action games like Devil May Cry. Capcom was worried they weren't innovating enough with the series, only for it to basically enter a hiatus for five years, broken by a reboot most fans didn't like, followed by a six year hiatus until we got a classic title in a format we basically don't see anymore at all.

Even though the story had me crying from laughter during a couple of scenes it came off as incredibly lame compared to re3 or re2. I had my head in my hands during the romance scenes. At the time of the original dreamcast release I can see why it got glowing praise. The game's graphics would have been a huge step up from what came before and the style was something new in the series. The level design is at its most complex and the game is rather difficult. My favourite areas would be the prison, mansions and Antarctica. The game's soundtrack is also my favourite in the series.
However I think this game has aged the worst aside from the original. The training facility and airport are the least interesting areas in the game and yet are horribly padded out, especially since Chris's scenario forces you to do them again. Monster designs are decent. I like the variety of the zombie designs, the spider redesigns are alrights and the returning mosnters have been updated just fine. The original monsters fall flat. Bandersnatch's look goofy and are irritating to encounter in the game. The poisonous flying creatures are just a nuisance. The zombie salamanders are just lame.
The boss fights can be very hit or miss. I'll give the development team credit for trying to make the mandatory fights more interesting than just stand, shoot and move. Nosforatu is easily the highlight. A great monster design and interesting sniper fight where you have to shoot him just when he close enough to be visible but for your in his range. Alexia form 1 can be rather tense with her instant kill attack and attempts to block your escape with walls of fire. I even don't mind the tyrant despite being a real sucker punch on a first playthrough. However, Alexia form 2 is an irritating fight with too much going on, form 3 being irritating to hit and mutant Steve has to be one of the most bullshit moments in all of Resident Evil. The other fights are so un-threating they're not worth mentioning.
I'll give them credit for trying to create an ambitious story but I think it falls flat. The voice acting and dialogue is laughably bad(Claire being the exception), the villains are more funny than threatening (aside from Alexia after transforming) and the love story is terrible. Its entertaining but for all the wrong reasons.
Overall I like the game but it my least favourite in the classic resident evil series so far (I've yet to play Zero). I'd give it B rank for being fun overall but held back by noticeable flaws.

The idea of going back into an area after its token Resident Evil self-destruct and trying to traverse the wreckage was interesting, but my main issue with it is that it feels like you could have survived it as some areas were almost completely untouched by the explosion. But needing to re-acquire the blue plate key item previously left by Claire believing it was no longer useful is also a good example of subversion with how in the RE games your character somehow always knows when a key item is no longer needed.

Code: Veronica is weirdly like Sonic CD (compared to Sonic 2) in terms of its development: it's clear there were some ideas implemented from the sequel that was in development simultaneously but it also lacks some of the things that mainline sequel did. The thing that Code: Veronica doesn't have that Resident Evil 3 introduced (and which Zero and REmake retained) which I missed the most... was the ability to move freely on staircases. You can't stop midway and shoot down or up at zombies or expect enemies to shuffle up or down steps after you. That was a really cool thing in parts of REmake.

Nice video, i finished RE Code Veronica last week, and for me this game was the most hard in the classic series, the enemies are more fast than the others, and the aim isn't acurrate as the previuos one. Speaking about the enemies: the tyrant boss fight in the plane you can win easier if you shoot 10 explosives arrows at him, than you can activate the cargo and that's it; and in the steve part you can quick turn and run, he will hit you one time, you use a herb, and run, then you be able to escape with a little bit of trouble.

Yes, it's a nice classic RE game, but it has way more flaws and weird design/character/story/gameplay choices than 1, 2 and 3. It really feels like the odd one out among RE games - for valid reasons.

RE was known for cheese, but at this point there are moments where you can't help but wonder if the developers were trolling you.

Great video! I was interested in this kind of video, to analyze and see what it is about Code Veronica that just kind of makes the game not as fun or memorable as the first three games. The training facility and prison are indeed kind of dull, and the fact that you have to explore those areas twice (once with Claire, and then with Chris) kind of drags down the experience. I felt that the palace and the private residence are the two best areas, and it's a shame that you do not get to spend too much time in them. If there is a Code Veronica Remake one day, I hope that the Remake would focus on and greatly expand upon those two areas.
Maybe more so than the first three games, but, to me, Code Veronica just felt like one giant fetch quest that had you running back and forth all over the map. I also remember a lot of room or area transitions taking an extremely long time, such as whenever you have to get on and off the submarine.
I also agree that there are certain parts of the game that are poorly designed, from the standpoint that you can permanently screw yourself over (such as the Tyrant plane fight, having no indication about when you are about to switch between Claire and Chris, and, and how easy it is to miss the magnum).
I would like to say that the Private Residence could possibly be the creepiest area in any Resident Evil game. I think that it's truly a shame that more wasn't done with that area and setting.

I loved Code Veronica. Never had any issue with the music, the setting, the bosses. It was cheesy at times, but it didn't ruin anything for me. It just added to the atmosphere. The only thing I guess I could have done without is Wesker's new powers. I still get nostalgia for a replay every time I think about it. I love every one of the games for different reasons. All the Resident Evil and Dino Crisis games are very unique to me, I hardly get the same experience and mood with other games. I loved Silent hill as well, but it creates a complete different mood to me so I don't compere them.

The tyrant plane fight and this quirk of Claire and Chris sharing the same inventory box could only exist in an age where one didn’t have access to the opening weekend hot takes. After watching half of your video I decided to play the game as I love RE1 style of gameplay, I must say that I had a lot of fun and thought that it was very good game. However I agree with every critic, I particularly think the story is good but most of the dialogues are almost RE1 level, it tries to be serious but it comes across as funny. I can't even describe the rage that I felt when the game switched over to Chris, I had to load up my save from 1 hour and a half ago to do the entire Antartic Lab as Claire so I could leave my weapons and ammo for Chris. This character switching out of blue is just as trash as the final boss, at least you can cheese it with the Submachine Guns if you stand in a corner, but if you wasted your ammo it's worse than RE3 Remake Final Nemesis.

  • @Dacho_Shaki

I always thought that Code Veronica is just a run of the mill standard RE game that doesn't really break new ground outside the graphics or the semi-fixed camera system. I honestly believe it was a clever decision to give Nemesis a numbered title because, unlike Code Veronica, it took more of an ambitious approach in terms of the design and scope. I enjoyed Code Veronica, but not really something that I'd go back to unlike first three entries.

I went with Hard, got to this point and just could not get passed it. So I restarted, went down to easy, and played more carefully. I then got to the plane, and (if memory serves) they have a rocket launcher sitting in the cockpit on Easy. Suffice to say I got through the second time. And yes, to save my Resident Evil fan card I went back and beat the game on Hard after I did the rest of the series.

My first playthrough went very poorly.
I missed a lot of the more powerful weapons, and chewed through Claire's sub-machine guns, thinking there would be plenty of ammo later.
When I got to Alexia, I had to fight her with just the pistol, as the Hunter's had chewed through my Shotgun Shells, and I never found another weapon as Chris.
When I got to the final boss, I had to use the Crossbow. Not even with explosive rounds, just the normal crossbow. I didn't have the magnum, the AK, the other SMG's. The pistol wouldn't cut it and the shotgun wasn't cutting it.
There were several points where I almost restarted the game.
I had to use the Grenade Launcher to get past Mr.BasicallytheIncredibleHulkwithaBattleaxe
It was frustrating... but beating it was a relief.

my main problem with CV's story was Wesker's cutscenes. He pretty much appeared 3 times just to go "I could easily kill you but I won't" and then leaves for some arbitrary reason. That and the opening sequence making Claire look like Bruce Willis just so she can go back to being a tank-controlled character that refuses to go faster than a jog was more than a little annoying.
