Off-grid living in Colorado

- Rodney Cook and his wife Kalin live with their two daughters, six grandchildren, a niece and a son-in-law on 40 acres of land in Colorado's San Luis Valley. The family gets their electricity from generators that they run just eight hours a day. They haul water in from a nearby artesian well. If they want a hot bath they have to boil their water on a gas stove. The Cooks have lived off the grid for 10 years and finds it difficult to imagine living anywhere else.

I've lived poor, I've lived homeless, I've lived off-grid, I know for a fact you don't have to live trashy in any of those scenarios. All those poor kids being raised to believe it is ok to trash your property up, respect the land, all the junk can be scrapped, burned and buried.. Other than that, these people have it right.
Valid comment. Most of this people is a drug junkies unfortunately, sadly and poorly.
I would have the cleanest card board box with flower curtains! 😂
You saw all the liquor bottles too
I think this family is awesome! They will survive the chaos this country is heading towards while most will be crying and losing it. I just purchased land in San Luis Valley. I hope I get to meet them some day. I think veterans understand living without and making things work better than most, but look how most us the world treats us. The Cooks have the family values we all should have. God Bless them.
Marc Branker... that is the truth.. most people dont understand.. we are a big family we love each other.. and help each other all the time
I agree! As my brother and I are looking into buying land in San Luis Valley as well. Have some questions for you if you're still around.
MARC - are you going to dig a well, or haul water from town?? I'm going on the road full-time in a 30-foot trailer, but thinking about land that I can 'land on'. I have huge solar, but water is the problem. Your thoughts??
they have a life most people wouldn’t understand. They are FREE.
They are meth users. So you're correct in a sense.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
@@JewelzFin really get a life
I’ve watched this around 200 times and love it. Made me fully want to live off grid. Just about to in May. Been a 3 year journey & the tiny house is about to be built.
Congratulations!! Do you have a particular place in mind? I'm thinking Colorado when I get my money right.
@@kaneshap.6146 Doesn't take much. There's land in most high desert towns for ~$5k that range from 1-5 acres. This trend is definitely not unique to CO. You'll find them from NV to TX and everywhere in between. Should probably act quickly though. Billionaires like Gates are snatching up land quicker than ever before.
@@brymstoner yeah I know. As if they don't already have too much. 🙄 My main concern would be my safety though, so I'd have to research an area then act. I've been looking around and the prices for some places are so so cheap. But then I'd have to worry about water constantly, or depend on having a store nearby which I wouldn't want to do. Thank you! :)
@@kaneshap.6146 SLV is pretty good for that. Gas and food supplies are available relatively nearby. Maybe upto an hour each way depending on where you're located. And they see decent enough rainfall in the valley. But iirc, there are restrictions now on how much you can collect. rowing in the ground is a bit futile though. best to grown in large tubs / containers / barrels. And specifically to the valley, avoid using the Rio Grande - it's contaminated by litter pollution and probably more.
Wow I used to work at valley meat the butcher shop and I remember Kevin picking up all our scraps for his pack of dogs this is mind blowing!!!
@Miguel Cortez for free scraps he did
Wolf dogs need a lot of protein. If not, they'll find it on their own. I wouldn't want to live next to a wolf-dog pack being held in with four-foot ag fence.
There are a lot of things that worry and bother me about this video. This family lives more of a forced off-grid living than they do prepper style off-grid living. With all of those people living there, they should not be living in so much filth, what I mean to say is that there are plenty of them to get the place cleaned up a bit for those children.
Nothing wrong with them living the way they want.. they look at peace.!
With that being said, I would say just clean up the place a bit and that’s all.
ZEROKOOL-20 they are definitely meth heads
Most people are scared of other people who live differently than most. I see Nothing wrong with living off the grid our ancestors lived off the grid because electricity, toilets, plumbing, computers and the internet weren’t around back then. These people live one with the earth in a modern society. These people are probably smarter than most because they have to do whatever it is that is needed with limited access.
And what about there children? Dont they have right to meet somebody and make there own familys ? What kind of life is it?🤔
@@nalimikari6936 the kind where when you grow up, you grown. if they wanna leave and make their lives elsewhere, theyre allowed to. they just dont, it seems.
@@damonrobles149 at least you get it lol. No particular reason an off grid situation has to look like a demilitarized zone after world war three. Everyone of u commenting thought we were crazy for living like this.....look at what us hapoening right now.....we have enough food to feed our family for a year+.....what do u think now huh

We actually didn't know they were doing meth at the time.....when we found out we kicked them off the property.....we have 6 grandkids living out here, we couldn't have them out here......we don't do drugs
Not everyone thinks that. I bought 36 acres out there a year ago; literally months before Covid became an emergency situation. I love it out there. I'm glad the county chose to enforce codes that will steer away what the adults in this family chose to engage in. I feel bad for the children.
@@kalincook8151 ... I get your lifestyle, don't listen to the nay sayers... their problem will be huge when the coming storm catches them by surprise. I lived like this for a year and a half, moving this month. Some people can do it and are truly happy. I just can't! It's hard. I'm a city girl and used to having running water from the city and electricity. And be able to take as long as showers or baths as I wanted. This life is hard especially with children. My son is 3 now and it's not a life I want for my son. The isolation is very hard. I'm used to seeing people and hanging out and going to malls restaurants go see a movie ect. Their is none of that when you live so secluded like this. Me and my family live in the mountains in Colorado. I moved out here because of my fiance and he waned to be close to his dad. I was a bit uneducated and unaware of how hard it be. I feel like a fish out of water especially for a black girly girl. It's scary at night! Bears terrify me! I did it for my fiance, but I can't do it no longer!
I’m headed off grid very soon from the city. I will miss the baths the most.
You've got my respect for moving out to the middle of nowhere for your fiancé. I hope he appreciated it. I can't imagine being a "black girly girl" who likes the benefits of city life being at home out here. I hope you didn't run into any racial discrimination, but I'm sure you caught some flak for being a "city girl" or "outsider." I'm old and retired and originally from a town of 250, so I'm comfortable here, but if my grown kids come to visit we usually make arrangements to meet in Taos, which has much greater options for dining and shopping and enjoying the conveniences of modern life. I hope you found a happy place for you and your son.
WOW unbelievable I can't believe the comments I'm reading who are you to judge how people live BIG THANKS to Rodney and his family for allowing us to see different ways to live off grid and you sr. are right not many could do what you do
Josh u are right I was watching kids all the time and this is not right saying shit about my family.. Brandy about died and u were a big help out here.. And my dishes are clean.. And yes my uncle gets mad but he loves all of us.. U guys have no idea what it is to be like to feel like ur family don't love u...
Ernie some of the comments being made by James johnson, MMAfighting warrior, jungle skunk, etc are people that used to live on our property....they were living in their car so we gave them a place to live, we treated them like family, which they trashed....as for the meth comment by them, we do not do meth, make meth or sell meth....as a matter of fact there was no meth out there til they brought it onto the property.....as so as we found out we had the sheriff come remove them.....it was their actions that got them kicked off the propery
You think it's ok to be poor and struggle because you are a low achiever, lazy with no belief system within yourself. I hope to God you don't have kids.
@@Sammy-qz3os my kids will out like every city kid out there, you know we haven't ever get COVID because we have what we call an immune system, we haven't ever wearn a mask, and we are doing fine, when there are people dying in cities all over, so maybe you should rethinking your shit. Sheepel

It's interesting how selective people are with who they honor. The man is a disabled vet. People here in the comments seem to figure he's unworthy of any respect. Perhaps if he was a more presentable, tidy vet those same folks might ask him to appear in their symbolic flag-waving parades.
In spite of some obvious bleakness in the Cook family, they've scratched out an existence from pretty impossible circumstances, and have managed to find some joy and happiness in the process.
Yes, they are just a different class from some of us - they smoke, like wrestling etc. Nothing wrong with it - just different although I am not sure he is that disabled as he seems to move heavy farm stuff around.
Quite misleading, as if "off-grid" equates to living in squalor or being a simpleton. (I am NOT dissing the family shown, just pointing out the obvious bias of the filmmaker)

@@brandymotter9838 I replied to one of your post. I would love to come visit and get a tour of the surrounding area is that something the family would be intrested in? Let me know if so I can bring goods or cash.
Both my parents were raised off the grid growing up. My mother in New Mexico & Father in Colorado. They learned hard work at an early age. My parents chose to raise us in the State of California, they wanted more opportunity for us, to have things they didn't have growing up. Every summer my parents took my brother's, sister's & myself, back to their roots, showed us where they lived. Pretty interesting.
If people choose to live off grid, that's their choice, nothing wrong with it.
As long as your at peace and enjoy life.

I grew up in the Valley. I left in 1968 and will be returning in a few years. I’m going to build a small 16’x48’ 1 bed 1 bath home. I’ll be using solar power and the property I own now has a well and water rights.
Nowhere West of the Mississippi has more Appalachia vibes than the San Luis valley

@@joshdobson4685 and yet they're fed, watered, clothed and attend school. What have you achieved, aside from boasting on an empty channel about being a pro gamer? Walk a mile in their shoes before you start throwing stones.
Dunno why they are trying to depict off grid living as sad and unhealthy.
Off grid living is life.
Living off the grid? Government aid? Doh! How does that work?
It works by serving in the military and either getting medically discharged or retiring. The father is a veteran.
I want to come visit! Is that a possibility im about to buy land I think near you all. I am willing to pay for my stay and a tour of the area if your family is willing to have me?!
At least they dont have any karens calling cops
I bought 2 5 acre parcels right there in san luis moving in December there off-grid living gonna put container homes, solar power, well and septic. so excited
You might want to do a little research about what you can and can't put on your property (i.e. container homes). This isn't a territory anymore.
Beautiful way of life. Most kids nowadays are stuck on tablets or phones and can’t use their imagination for crap, spoiled and have zero life skills other than eating tide pods! These kiddos will grow up with a healthy respect for both land and animals! I applaud them!
Fact
Tide pods for laundry, not for lunch!
If all of you are happy in living that way then wonderful. Love and light and blessings.
Living off grid doesn't mean living in filth. Clean your shit!
I love these people !

sorry we don't get on CZcams much,
I'm seriously thinking about doing my own version of this outside of Alamosa, CO. Selling my house to buy 5-10 acres of land and build a big metal garage and live out of my class A RV inside the garage and commute to the city for work.I have no wife or kids just my dog and I. I will utilize solar power, & pay to have electricity and a water well , I have no plans to have livestock right now. I will be still on the grid, and still work but I hope to have a better overall quality of life than the city can offer or at the very least come back with an life experience.

I will be buying land out their in February and start building. You should stay in touch with me. Maybe we can help eachother out on building our own
Did you do it? I’m considering.
I just relocated to Alamosa. Lol interesting folks outs here for sure
Don't judge these people...live and let live. The adults have a choice and the young'uns will soon enough.
My only concern is the big fire coming out of that crazy cook stove. What the heck is up with that?
They all look happy&with family, more power 2 them.:-)

OFF GRID with DOUG & STACY
Ye was just thinking didn't the local govt shut down a few off the grid properties in colorado? Maybe just the well kempt ones and they let ones like this go on to make example of. It's pretty clear this piece is going for shock and awe here, patronizing. They should showcase some other examples that are a bit cleaner that show the greater potential and efficiency of off the grid living.

Exactly. Not how I'd live, but I can show you people that live worse than this in the suburbs. I'd love to see a film about people living in filth in the suburbs... oh, wait.. yeah they already have those.
You'all best not be thinking you know what's best for someone else...Someone might start thinking they know what's best for YOU
I grew up in the Valley, I love it there.
At least put in a cheap windmills or run some pipe to the well and build a mini water tower out of that cistern, to pressurize it! Invest in some cinder blocks and build a super insulated little hut to put your fridge and freezer in to keep the cold in them and give more room to vent the heat out. (Pretty silly to run a fridge and freezer inside in the winter.)

I don’t understand why people are so judgmental. This man is a family man raising his family the way he knows best. My father owned and operated his ironworks company in San Diego, Ca. One day he became fed up with the city and decided to sell everything and move to Mexico to start his dream of owning a farm. I didn’t understand his decision back then. In 2003 I was injured serving in the United States Marine Corps. I came home to San Diego and things didn’t seem the same. It was almost suffocating to live in a city. My father asked if I could help him at his ranch in Mexico as he was now in old age having trouble maintaining his ranch. My family and I moved there to help. There where no cell phones, computers or internet. Caring for horses and cattle was a very peaceful way to live. In the evenings every one would gather around a fire and sing to my uncle playing his guitar, or we would just talk and stair at the stars. In 2010 my family and I moved back to the states after my older brother had a stroke at the age of 38. He was at the time doing very well financially, but the pressure of his work had him in very poor health. We still live in the states where life seems too fast to enjoy. I like to think back to those peaceful nights under the stars and hope to one day return to a simpler life with no traffic lights or WiFi. People seem much friendlier and peaceful.
Work as a team ❤ a family thing.
