    It’s great the Glowforge was smart enough to not let you continue the print until you had the correct height, rather than just letting you continue and possibly ruining the project.

    Lisa: Great video on engraving! thank you. How do you set prices when the time to engrave is almost an hour? If you can , please share with me how much the engraved bed tray would re-sell for. I have an Ikea about 7 miles from me an would love to make some of these. I look forward to your reply

    • @LisaPottsDesigns
      @LisaPottsDesigns  Před 3 lety +4

      Good question! I try to set it based on what I would pay myself hourly, and what the perceived value is of the board. I always try to price my items for at least 3x the cost of material. Of course, that can vary, especially for items that are lower/higher cost. For this particular board, I would price it at $80.

    HI, love the tray. Does the darkness of the engraving wear away with time and cleaning? should you seal it to keep the darkness? Will mineral oil and wax help retain the darkness?

    • @LisaPottsDesigns
      @LisaPottsDesigns  Před rokem

      Hi Eric! So far the darkness is still great, but I also do a light cleaning by wiping it. Mineral oil can certainly help!

    Very helpful video! Thanks! I noticed you have your glowforge in your room. Is it safe to use like this? Arent the fumes harmful? Doesnt is cause your room to smell of smoke?

    • @LisaPottsDesigns
      @LisaPottsDesigns  Před 3 lety

      Yes, it's in my office! I recommend getting an inline fan setup (I've linked mine in the description). This pulls out the fumes more and is MUCH quieter. My office hardly has a smell, and when it does, I run my air purifier.

    • @LisaPottsDesigns
      @LisaPottsDesigns  Před 3 lety

      Weird quirk in Glowforge. I couldn't get out of the screen until I set a height. Once I did that, I just set my focus and it essentially overrode it.

    • @oliveandapron
      @oliveandapron Před 2 lety

      @@LisaPottsDesigns This is always the part that messes me up when I engrave. So the height you set when you use "uncertified material" doesnt matter, because when you set focus it automatically detects and sets it to the correct focus height?

    • @LisaPottsDesigns
      @LisaPottsDesigns  Před 2 lety

      @@oliveandapron Correct! Now with some materials, you can have issues, so that's why we use calipers as well. Some instances it's better to set height, but that's when you're doing something like multiples with a jig.

    I have made a wreath with family name typed inside. I purchased the wreath from Silhouette for my business edition. I added words on my own in the middle. I have made it all black, traced it, etc. I can get it all done and saved as SVG, BUT when I try to put on Glowforge the wreath is dotted. What am I doing wrong?

    • @LisaPottsDesigns
      @LisaPottsDesigns  Před 3 lety

      Unfortunately, you can't export SVG files you've purchased from Silhouette. I recommend recreating it, or using an SVG from Design Bundles.

    Hello! I was under the impression that there are always burn marks if you don’t mask the wood. What determines whether or not you have to mask?

    • @LisaPottsDesigns
      @LisaPottsDesigns  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi! A few things.
      1. If the wood is coated, most times I don't mask because I can just wipe off the charring.
      2. Some materials I engrave so often, I have found settings that work well for my machine without charring.
      3. A lot of times, if I choose not to mask, I lightly sand the item to smooth it out and get rid of any charring that might happen!
      Personally, I really dislike peeling off my mask, so the majority of times, I don't do it!

    • @livingonthemoon3007

    Is there a way to take that same design and also Engrave a P behind the image as a monogram?

    • @LisaPottsDesigns
      @LisaPottsDesigns  Před 2 lety

      Absolutely. I would make a P, right click, send to back. Then make a small offset around the design on top (like .06). Select the offset, hold shift, select the P. Go to the modify panel and choose subtract. This should take out the area of the P that had the offset. This space helps define your design.
      I would also recommend making the P in back a different line color and engraving it with a lighter engrave to add dimension.

    • @LisaPottsDesigns
      @LisaPottsDesigns  Před 3 lety

      I honestly hate masking and peeling it up. With bamboo, I've found some good settings that give me a nice result. I just take a wipe to clean the excess, or I give it a quick wash and treat with board oil.
