    I think there should be another name for a "chromosome" when it is replicated into two sister chromatids (duosome?). This new entity is essentially two chromosomes lassoed together and yet we still refer to it as "a chromosome", which can be confusing for students when describing mitosis/meiosis.

    • @ArielStar
      @ArielStar Před 4 lety +6

      Yes! 100% agreed. Duosome, like you suggested, or anything will do. As long as there's a new name.

      Not only that, but in both high school and my undergrad I encountered tricky test questions that specifically targeted how many ‘chromosomes’ are in the cell at any moment. Why it persists to be this way and teachers keep hammering on it is absurd

    I’m sorry, but the way replication is explained is super shoddy, it could easily confuse someone who had just started delving into the subject into thinking there’s more chromosomes/chromatids than what’s actually the case. In a nutshell, the DNA replicates and what was once a single chromosome now becomes two identical copies which are called the chromatids. However, these two chromatids are not separated yet, but are still attached together at the centromere (a well-known X shape) in a single structure; this structure is still known as a chromosome which is made up of two sister chromatids. They eventually separate in anaphase, which is when they become individual chromosomes.
