Scavenging a Poundland vibro-motor

  • Some devices can be a very useful source of motors, and this one contains a low voltage and fairly low current motor that will potentially find use in solar ornaments and other projects.
Removing the motor was tricky. I ended up having to use a hacksaw to carefully cut a slot through the plastic casing to allow it to be parted enough with a flat-blade screwdriver to allow the motor to be extracted. If the tip is cut off it may allow the motor to be pushed out.
The eccentric weight came off the 1mm shaft very easily.

Had one of these in my bedside drawer years ago. Without my knowledge, my curious 12 year old son was rifling through my drawer and came across an object that vibrated when you pressed the button. Must be a massager, his innocent mind thought and he proceeded to give himself a little shoulder massage, before returning it to the drawer. Later on, he announced he had found the massager and although it was quite nice on his shoulders, it was a little inefficient with its small size. His father and I looked at each other in shock... before losing all self control and laughing for a solid couple of minutes. When we regained our composure, his father explained what it was... our son was devastated. And we have never let him forget it. He no longer goes through other peoples' drawers, either.

An improvement, normally the inner sleeve is well stuck down with a solvent weld, and yes I have salvaged lots of those motors, and often enough a rather interesting reduction gearbox as well, complete with a crank to make linear motion as well. Will say that, despite being sealed really well, they are also not waterproof, or liquid proof. Yes not really repairable, but I always had lots of those to use when young, and the failure modes on them invariably involved corroded connections, or open wires or switches. The rudimentary speed control, steel wire wound on a piece of wire insulation, was surprisingly robust, though again prone to poor contacts. They also did not like running on 12V from a used car battery, for some reason, lots of glowing steel, and melted plastic, and motors that turned into light emitting devices for a few fun seconds.
