The 2026 Formula 1 Regulations are "slower than Formula 2", apparently.

So yeah, the simulator feedback is "alarming", and the car is having to be driven in such a conservative way, that they end up "slower than the current Formula 2 machinery." Damn.

@@TommoOnCZcamsIf the hybrid era didn't kill F1, it appears the next regs definitely will. It all sounds like a complete shambles.
How is a driver supposed to make any difference with that level of complex technology being involved !?
It's bad enough the engine will change (worsen) again, but to couple that with a significant aero complexity at the same time probably means we'll get another ultra-dominant era.
The most interesting seasons in recent F1 history have been after a long period of convergence where teams can't squeeze much more performance from the regs. It's downright stupid to make another significant change so soon. I'm hoping they use these "findings" to postpone the new regs to 2030
hahahaha good one LOL
@mvd4436 the idea is to have smaller car. The cars got wider because it's easier to make a wide car faster. The problem is with small cars you can't reduce the weight by enough to counteract the areo, especially because safety will be as important if not more important because it's new territory.
The engine will also be worst because we are in a time with big shifts. Either everything turn to Electric or we make Eco fuel work so obviously the engines are more or less the first real ones in test as f1 was for year the testarea for new ideas and innovative for street cars.

I understand reducing costs and attracting new manufacturers but it was never going to be a cheap sport.
the thing is no manufacturer wants to join F1, there is no financial gain. they will all join WEC
At this point, IndyCar is the true pinnacle of motorsport than F1 is today.

Looking back it's clear that if we just stayed with the 2021 regs we'd have RedBull, Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren AT LEAST all competing at the front of the grid. The racing in 2021 was good up and down the grid, we had great convergence developing at the front and none of the ridiculous problems with the ground effect and 2026 rule sets
Honestly I actually miss those cars now
The only problems with ground effect really came about because Mercedes threw a tantrum and forced the ride heights up 10mm. That made the dirty air worse, making the whole redesign completely irrelevant.
The field spread was pretty huge in 2021. Much bigger than it was now - even after 5 years of those regs we were nowhere near convergence.
Had mercedes not made the decision to use the 2020 chassis in 2021 they would have walked that title. It's worth remembering that they were the only team other than Haas to not introduce any token spend. And even then they were on the podium at virtually every race.
funniest thing is that by the time McLaren and Ferrari finally do have consistently competitive cars it'll be a season too late, I too thought that 2021 showed that multiple teams had figured out and perfected how to race & develop their cars in the high downforce super dirty air, granted the ground effect regs have brought teams closer to front running pace a whole lot quicker than the old regulations ever did. so it's not all doom and gloom, imo it is a very poorly timed change though, 2025 is gonna be everyone's last bite at the cherry and based on how the RB20 looks right now, the RB21 is going to be a big problem for anyone elses title dreams in 2025.
the old regulations went on for too long but that last season with them was insane up and down the grid.
No, it would just be Merc and RB. Why would anybody else be able to compete with them?
Alonso: GP2 car, GP2!
Engineer: Thank you very much!
It's not 50/50. It is a maximum of 50/50, but most of the time, it's only the ICE that's running because the electric boost will run out very quickly. The electric motors will be activated for the first 2-3 seconds of the straight and then allow the 550hp Ice engine carry the speed. Wait, haven't we've seen that before in the 2015 LMPh1 cars?
Wec regs are so much better, f1 is dead
The battery will run out quickly if you deploy 100% of the power all the time, this wont happen. Maximum deployment at different speeds is regulated and teams will develop their own deployment strategies as well. The average power across a race lap will be considerably below the 1000hp peak power but its not a black and white thing where you either have full power or only ICE power.
Great info that!
@@fire-vk8dncolor me shocked, turns out removing 200kw of electric power with the MGU-K was a terrible idea...
@@Argosh more like hybrids are a bad idea
My friend is working at Mercedes and told me this at least 10 months ago. Theyve wildly fucked up the de-rate by removing elements of the PU. The addition of Active Aero is a knee-jerk reaction to the insane amount of drag these cars have been found to produce. The rear wing is set to act like a parachute, so coupled with a huge battery depletion at the end of straights, the cars are effectively rubber banding backwards as if they're being artificially slowed
I am not surprised given how important the MGU-H has been for the current set of engine's performance.
Reverse DRS
@@buggus0034DIS
Thing is we said this about the last regs that they’d be 3-4secs slower then all of a sudden F1 teams create beasts as quick as the last regs
Only downforce was changed. 2026 is dropping power by a significant margin and heavier still lol. Physics man
This directly effects the power unit which will impact the speed. The 2026 V-6 will have 33% less power under the new rules, reducing output to about 560hp (it's around 1000hp now I think). You're relying on a battery for more of your pace than before, which on fast circuits will deplete quicker. So instead of fuel management, it becomes battery management.
@@krisdoorga6558 yeah basically we're gonna get something closer to formula E type racing
@@pr3cious193 yeah, i mean it is already a ton of battery management, but with the new regs, it will be crazy. But that means a ton of development will go into the regen system and thus be good for road cars potentially.
@@charliemaybe they need to push forward their development on carbon-neutral/biofuels which release lower levels of particulates, instead of upping the electric factor. That's what the world needs more, high levels of electrification are not sustainable as lot of countries can't handle the increase power demand or don't have the infrastructure to do it.
Max Verstappen already expressed his concerns about the regulations 9 months ago. They were talking about the engine, that it had to be 60% conventional PU and 40% electric. Because with 50/50 they would have to lift on the straights or something to recharge the battery. No-one really listened because they would just say it was only to try and get an advantage again with Red Bull. And yes that could be partially true, but personally I don't like the 50/50 split because I don't feel like F1 should be 50% of Formula E...
Once again we are moving in the wrong direction

Formula L
No way to know that. There’s always someone to say something is bad. This report gave no actual information as to what the fundamental problem is.
By the same logic the first year of the V6 Turbo when everyone was having issues, I could anonymously state that because of the high rate of engine failures this will never work. However years later the V6 Turbo is one of the most reliable engines in F1 history
@@Michael-pi8psThat’s arguably even worse then mate-if the simulations are showing a major decrease in aero/pace yet they can’t even pinpoint the main issue. Lol.

That was more in regards to the PU changes, that you would prioritise harvesting energy over just flat out driving.
this format is a banger, I think it has potential to bring out more of your filmmaking magic and already did in this video
3:42 It looks like a Hadada ibis (Bostrychia hagedash), the incredibly loud bird that wakes you up at 3 AM.
They got be careful with these regs. FE is also moving closer to F2 speeds with Gen 4 which comes around the same time. They will have AWD, 800hp and a proper aero kit. I don't think it will be faster than F2 but it will certainly be close.
It would be pretty crazy if F1 was similar speed to FE, which you would never think of ever happening in recent years, but if they end up slower than F2. That could be the case.
And the part people might not be thinking about, is that it could make Super Formula the fastest open-wheel series around a circuit. Imagine that.

Simulation data is great and all, but has anyone asked Adrian Newey what he thinks about this?
Newey: I REALLY want to get on a boat now
Being a South African randomly seeing Tommo in Cape Town is absolutely wild 😂
First off I like the way you did this video! These new regs are probably going to be negative till we actually get the new car and teams figure out a way to make there version of the 2026 car. I’m not a fan of the 50/50 and would rather have a V8 straight up. The actually V8 would be better for carbon emission then what’s currently being discussed Lol
The irony of EV XD
I would love a maximum power reg like in wec to let teams choose their own setup. This with the cost cap and all that will make f1 interesting and competitive again. If they did this, it would still be an engineering sport, but with closer racing with the only thing that can change from car to car is the aero efficiency which wec also has a cap on. To make f1 interesting again, they need to get rid of a mandatory engine layout, make the cars smaller for those street circuits, and re-introduce refueling to let the cars be even smaller.
Not really, those teams can easily especially if tracks build around it support really good electric system with f1 racing in hot countries for the most part
@@Pfuetz4 EV's make sense in the long run, thing is motorsports are constantly swapping out power units so as far as racing goes, they're equally bad as anything else.
@@unfortunately_fortunate2000 Brother you need to look into the carbon emissions of making EV's and what happens to batteries after they're no longer useful. The emissions happen around the car, not in them. Plus lithium farming is brutal for planet and body. The waste lakes created by the plants are mini fallout events. I'd be way more interested in a hydrogen engine angle if they really want to be innovative.
One of my favorite Tommo videos in recent memory, the scenery changeup and random bits like the bird part made it more fun!
Liked the outdoors chat about F1. A few stop/sitting down shots here and there. Nice 👍🏻
if Tommo ever does a travel vlog it needs to be to classic gran turismo music 👌✨
A problem with the hybrid side of the new power unit is it is going from 160hp max to 470hp max while the deployment regs are staying at 4 megajoules per lap. This means teams will have to either run in a mode that produces less power than the previous v8 cars or run out of deployment halfway through each lap.
The birds are called Hadedas. They are very loud, very annoying and will wake you up in the morning. When you live here, you get use to them but for visiters, they can be overwhelming. If you are unfamiliar just search Hadeda sound and you'll see why 😂
Tommo this was a pretty cool and fresh presentation style. It would be nice to see some of these more vlogy type videos sprinkled in with your normal videos.
I don't think I had seen the ever so classic "Blog Style" from Tommo, great work as ever!
I really enjoyed the format for this video. Just walkin around and chatting, felt like I was hanging out with a buddy. Thank you, Sir.
I dont mind the idea that F1 slows down and corners like 130R actually get treated like corners again. That feels like something that will make for more overtaking opportunities in varying locations. However if the active aero systems that should be making the cars faster are messing up the whole system that the drivers only use 60% of the cars potential... thats just stupid.
As for the 50/50 energy source split, I still hate the direction of electric cars in fundamental principle. The environmental value of the course of the battery lifecycle has minimal benefits over fossil fuels and the raw materials are just as scarce as usable carbon. I would much rather F1 stick with the goals of using synthetic fuels where the energy source itself is near infinite if you use carbin recapture, and if the grid is green the net carbin is near zero, plus the process can be used to make polymer materials making the footprint net negative.
The bird is a Hadada ibis

Bird is a Hadida Ibis. they have an iconic screech.
The same iconic screech will have when the 2026 era begins with a boring domination with a total lack of overtakes after a really close 2025 campaign
Anyone could have seen this inevitability just from reading the regulations. Just quickly, they're:
> Keeping the same engine but introducing more spec parts
> Reducing the energy (power) of the fuel so the engines can only make around 500hp and that's an optimistic estimate.
> Made the engines more expensive and harder to develop (because same engine + more spec parts + less energy from fuel so its much harder to find power and performance)
> Reducing the fuel capacity to 80L
> Increasing battery size (and thus weight)
> Doing nothing else to significantly shave off weight and their current weight target is the weight of the 2021 F1 cars, which were still too heavy
> Reducing downforce,
> Mandating a 50/50 power split between ICE and electric and then keeping current arbitrary limits on electric power regen, storage and deployment.
And because the electric power can only be used at certain times and they've made it so the hybrid system has to put out more energy to meet the 50/50 target than it can recuperate and store, that means F1 cars are going to have 50% of their power missing except for specific moments. Worse still: because the cars can't regen enough energy quick enough, they have to go on fuel burning laps to generate energy, but they can't do that because their fuel tank has been reduced by 20%. It's utter foolishness.
Yup exactly this but fans were eating up things like turbo lag. Turbo lag was being promoted by the official f1 channel!!!
You never want that ish in a car it’s a stupid ruleset and anyone who read the rules properly knew the potential issues that were gonna occur how can you weight loss when batteries have worst energy availability than Fuel and you’re relying more on them???
This is before the issue of even charging up the batteries
yeah they should make the cars smaller, un cap the charge rate and regen rate, and these cars should be sub 1500 lbs easily instead of the min being almost 1800 lbs. This can be easily done with a more PU heavy setup and using more capacitors instead of batteries for a lighter setup that still allows for a quick power boost like a push to pass instead of relying on the electric to make up a ton of power. They should just open up the PU regs and just put a power cap on the total car. With the fuel limit, this will force manufactures to be creative in their choices for efficiency, power, and weight. With the cost cap and a better min weight limit, this could create a competitive racing field with the engineering side that all fans love. It would also allow for the grid to sound unique like wec
