  • What's up everyone,
Sorry it's been a bit but I had some computer issues and camera issues but I am stoked to say I am back on track. In this entry I am honestly all over the place. Kinda in the middle of trying a few new things and also looking at what I dig and what my ability will allow me to do. Not only do I have a few waves on the Vyper 130 but I also picked up a new prone board and wanted to give some reasons why. Hope you enjoy!

Great clip. Good intel on the boards. I found the same thing as well. Wider and more stable = less bails. Also, I suggest you learn the sink-start when towing. It's a lot faster than the wakeboard start. That's important when you're towing and a was is bearing down on you. All the tow guys do it.

Nice video. I was curious about the Vyper series -- kind of thought they were going to be more challenging to pump. I am also curious to hear your thoughts about baseplate shimming. I was looking at the Appletree Skipper vs. Appletree Mini Foil but I use a Foil Drive as an assist feature so boards with a planing hull are a little better than ones with a displacement hull especially for getting up. Speaking of jetskis -- I have done a lot of jetski starts with a foil and at one point it was great until I started using a Foil Drive instead. Just my thoughts but loading and unloading an 800lb jetski vs. adding an extra 8lbs on your board (battery plus motor), splitting time with the driver or having the entire time yourself, having someone else drive you around and be in control of the speed or drive yourself around and control your speed and direction, maintenance and fuel costs. For training and maximizing your wave count, there is no comparison. You can drive around the ocean continuously for 20-35 minutes on one battery depending on your skill level and foil size and catch 20 to 50 waves depending on the conditions. It's also like training with a backpack on -- so when you decide to take off the 8lbs of Foil Drive from your board / mast -- it will be even easier to pump. Sorry to reiterate the FD thing but my jetski has been idle since Foil Drive. Your prone foil progression has been nothing short of incredible especially since you seem to be figuring it all out in the ocean. There's a really good recent podcast -- Foil Drive Ep. 04 with Victor Harris that talks about his progression over a similar time period as yours.

Need to learn those Jet Ski starts. Try on a calm day with a Kite Buddies smaller Foil board. It will be easier to hold it perpendicular to the Jet Ski when starting. Also start as far to the side as possible so you don't end up in the Jet Wash and keep your Backfoot more to heal side until you are up to help stay outside of the wake..

Your absolutely right. We haven’t towed since that day but I am ready to try some new options.

The lift Journal is great. I think I am about 4months behind your progression. I am 75 kg and currently getting a few 2 for 1s on a takoon s glide 1200 setup, but thinking of switching to similar setup to you either progression 140 or progression 170 to improve my links and pumping to next wave. Wondering on your recommendation of 140p compared 170p for linking waves. Was thinking 75 katana mast as prone foil small shallow beach breaks to chest high river mouths. Maybe another on diff of 170p verse 140p for prone surf foiling, eg time on foil how many waves for 1, verses sacrifice on turning.

      Hey Michael,
First thanks for the support my friend I really appreciate it. So let's get into gear. I am not familiar with Takoon gear, but as far as Uni I kinda got it figured out. So first off mast height. I think the 750 Katana is perfect for Prone/ beach break. It's not too long where it's hitting the bottom but also I really like the stiffness and I think the 830 is more meant for wing stuff or using higher span wings itself. Several p[people have said a shorter mast feels more reactive in turns and I would say the aluminum 650 would be great but.. go carbon katana. So wings and this is the tricky thing. I got the 140 first then the 170. Now if I wasn't linking as many waves consistently with prior wings I think the 140 would be a little tougher. My first session took some getting used to but once I figured it out it was way better. The progression wings have way more glide than its competitors in similar spans. With that said it is a give and take. The 170 will be super easy to ride but will not turn as quick. requires a much slower turn. So if you want to connect more waves via pump then the 170 is for you. But the 140 is way faster and has an electric vibe to it. Instant speed and faster turns. Where I am now I almost feel that the turn into the waves is as important and the pump. I personally at this stage am getting the 125 as my surf wing. Haven't gotten it yet but watch this space. I will be doing an entry next week on kinda what the 170 is used for but if I am being honest. At my weight and ability I am using it only for learning winging and DW SUP. Hope this helps. I am all over the place.
