  • This 4-minute excerpt was taken from the September 2019 installment of "Ask Dr. Tony." Climate change activist Greta Thunberg is a force OF nature on a mission FOR nature. And her Asperger's qualifies her as a candidate of extraordinary abilities. Dr. Tony and Craig detail the gifts of autism and Asperger's that are a part of her intellect, character and passion. Asperger's is indeed her superpower. Expect great things from this highly motivated person.

I literally just learned today that Thunberg has aspergers. My respect for her has only increased. I imagined she has to brave criticism and stress to do what she does simply because she is a young teen, but add the aspergers, she has a will and conviction of iron to work for what is important to her. Kids like her give me hope for the future. And to all the people wanting to patronise her and paint her as this poor little disabled child with no will of her own; here's a poor little disabled adult who also cares about the environment, and has tremendous respect for this girl who has already accomplished more than I ever will. From one aspie to another, rock on Greta!

She’s 16. People discredit her for being a child. She’s on the spectrum. Like me. And she has a passionate. People discredit her by calling her a puppet or claiming that she is somehow being abused, or manipulated. She’s Swedish. That discredits those claiming she’s somehow a political pawn as her position as a Swedish person would not serve America politically in the first place. I’m proud of what she is doing. She has a point. Climate change is real (I will believe the decades of research my uncle and wife have published for NASA over the naysayers as they have seen the ozone hole with their own eyes). But the abuse she has been receiving from the naysayers is exactly the reason why more women are not being diagnosed on the spectrum and it is exactly the reason more women do not come forward bout being autistic. Because God forbid we may have developed our own opinions about our own passions and somehow be able to articulate ourselves as eloquently as Greta has done because if we do, we might get the same lashing out from a party whose agenda is to bully a young woman, a minor, for her mind. She’s on the spectrum. She’s 16. She CAN articulate her opinions. Which discredits those calling her a “puppet.” As for scripting, Twitter uses TelePrompTer. Great orators use their written speeches. And they all flounder if they cannot find their notes. The fact that people hate her means she is doing something good and right. I can only dream of being able to be as bold as she is and that I can be able to give speeches like she did without feeling nauseated and timid. Maybe one day, I will. After all, Greta is 16 and doing it. So I should be able to do as well. Thank you for addressing things Tony Atwood.

Thanks for covering this. From the perspective of having Aspergers and OCD as well, what I find amazing about Greta is how she utilizes her strengths and limitations and fine tuning it in such a way that helps her achieve positive results. She steps out of her comfort zone and routines and navigates a world that isn't really designed for people on the spectrum.
Watching her from a year ago till now, one can see how she has grown as a person. She has said in an interview that her "alone world" is getting smaller as the real world opens up around her. She is learning each step of the way and turning those limitations into strengths. It's hard being around a lot of people and large amounts of sensory input, but here she is doing just that.
It shows other Aspies that no matter how different you feel from the rest of the world, there is still room for you to walk freely in your own skin. It shows us that you CAN step out of the shadows and make your voice heard while accomplishing extraordinary things in the process.

  • @ginastotallybodaciousunive2375

She makes complete sense. If the world wasn't soo concerned with temporary comfort, power and money they would see that.

Except if you look at the climate data, the planet is NOT getting warmer, it's getting colder. So she got that part wrong. I feel like she is being used by her parents and whoever wants us to believe the earth is getting warmer. We are having brutal long winters and it's going to get worse.

Quite a few commenters here assuming autism means the inability to think for yourself, or just insulting a channel they likely wouldn't even watch if didn't have a controversial person in the title. Link me to live footage of you addressing the UN, using your perfectly articulated and infinitely better knowledge of climate change, next time you have the chance.

I'd be curious to learn about Greta's use of metaphors and sarcasm -- my diagnosis was rejected because I use metaphors and sarcasm, yet here we see someone who uses them publicly (i.e. "our house is on fire", "you have stolen my childhood" and "Donald needs to chill out and watch a movie" etc..

I've never had him diagnosed but there are many things he does I would consider "different" or "strange" in my eyes. I'm thinking I probably should have him tested? Any advice would be appreciated.

Pre-judged stigmatization of anyone who has autism must never be tolerated! In the olden days, especially in the 1970s, people diagnosed with the spectrum of developmental disorders under it were prejudicially shamed, ostracized, belittled, mocked or thrown damaging dirt on them. Nowadays, we now recognize that we need to respect people with any form or forms of this spectrum disorder before we even think of even debasing them.
